Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Live so that if you miss a day of work people aren’t hoping you’re dead.

She burned that motherfucker down, and I am so here for it. Thank you, Caroline Kennedy.

Everybody saw this coming.

Petty moves from a petty man.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Dear Washington Post, you are the darkness now.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

The fight for our country is always worth it. ~Kamala Harris

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

I am pretty sure these ‘journalists’ were not always such a bootlicking sycophants.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

He wakes up lying, and he lies all day.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

Radicalized white males who support Trump are pitching a tent in the abyss.

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

Convention Open Thread

This post is in: Election 2008, Did You Know John McCain Was A POW?

FacebookTweetEmail

This just seems so dull by comparison.

As I write this, Tom Brokaw is talking about how John McCain is like a WWII fighter pilot. How many of them are still alive?

7:33 pm- Some 70 year olds wearing yellow, the color of surrender, are bringing in the colors. I suppose the point of having these old folks do this is to point out how broken the military is after eight years of Republican rule that we now have to draft old people.

8:13 pm- I honestly, not even in my wildest dreams (or nightmares, since I was a Republican for so long), thought I would be hearing Republicans seriously selling their candidate based on their experience in PTA and City Council.

Meanwhile, we learn that after months of attacking Obama’s experience, the McCain campaign has decided that questioning experience is sexist.

9:37 pm- Yawn. Has it occurred to the Republicans that they are having to spend their entire convention defending their VP?

Now Orson Swindle is speaking. You know who he is. The guy who smears the military service of anyone with a (d) after their name. Stay classy Republicans.

I demand to know why your server hasn’t already been taken out and shot. Even McCain didn’t crash Navy planes as often as your site has.

Well, it isn’t dull outside the convention. Amy’s working on some video from today’s Democracy Now that tells more of the story.

Maybe someone should tell Brokaw that McCain was a Vietnam POW. It’s hard to believe, because the normaly voluble Senator is so reticent on the subject, but investigation has revealed that it’s true.

The GOP proposes we go from a Vice President who shoots people in the face, to a Vice President I’d like to shoot in the face.

Wait, I have an idea to make it more fun, a “Flub Pool”

GIANT, SLOW MOTION FLAG is taken off the screen. Color guard presents the flag, carrying multiple flags, in front of a new video of the flag, mic’ed up so everyone can hear the marching orders. Absolute silence in the hall. Anthem sung by operatic baritone. Fun.

The weird thing is that FOX isn’t covering it, but MSNBC is.

But how many times have they shown the few folks of color?

Apparently, there are only 36 black delegates, so we’re going to have to get used to seeing the same faces over and over.

Or maybe they’re not even pretending anymore. That tent gets smaller and smaller.

Did they really want to bring this up?

BTW, John, you might want to point your server host at this ebay sale. It might help.

Uh, John. When surrendering, the traditional approach is to wave a white flag.

If you wave a yellow one, the enemy will all fall down and die from laughing.

Should this get through the link and the quote:

As for Rick’s noise about being at war: Which nations are we at war with? When shall we exclude nationals of those nations from our territory? Or, if we are at war with some ideology, why are we not excluding adherents of that ideology from our shores, as we excluded communists (correctly, in my opinion)? War, fiddlesticks. Who feels himself to be at war? Where can I buy my gas mask and my War Bonds?

    Now they tell us.

I think the yellow (ribbons?) would have been for remembrance — I hate to mention a song from the 1970s about yellow ribbons on a tree but there is an older tradition (circa 1860s in Texas and the south) of girls wearing yellow ribbons round their necks to remember boyfriends. I think the yellow ribbons are to remind the convention attendees of the troops. (But not to remind them that the troops are broken.)

It isn’t some much the dullness as it is the mendacity and stupidity. It cannot be the case that the Republicans actually think that all the crap they have spewed over the years about identity politics was true, can they? The PUMAs, all six of the authentic ones, represent the identity wing of American politics. By and large people support the people they support because they like the outcomes of their policies. So McCain nominates a women who is antithetical to all the concerns of “independent” women and who is a religious nutter. Plus they lie. This RNC is beyond the pale in terms of lying and misrepresentation. God alone knows if it will work and she aint talking.

I caught Scarborough and Mika on earlier this evening talking about how small the room was at the X-Cel center. Then one of them said “Well it will look like a lot of people are here when it’s full.” There are a lot of empty seats being shown without being panned by the cameras.
