Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

“woke” is the new caravan.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

I was promised a recession.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

We still have time to mess this up!

Their freedom requires your slavery.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Made it to Charleston, btw, and am blogging from the hotel. Listened to Limbaugh the entire way down, and that literally is three hours without a fact. It is mind-numbing. Also heard this on one of the oldies stations, and it is now stuck in my head, so I thought you should suffer, too:

We both agreed that Hall and Oates have aged better than Billy Joel’s music, though.

Better than most of it, but The Stranger is still really, really good. It would be even if it didn’t evoke the image of sitting on your hand until it falls asleep, and then using it to shake hands with Mr. Cranky.

Josh Marshall just excoriating the McCain group for fucking up the Walter Reeds. As long as they prep for this shit, as much a show as it is an actual political gathering, this is a colossal fuck up. How NOBODY realized they had the wrong building….how is this possible? Is exactly NO ONE in the McCain camp an ex-military brass?

But hey, Palin can shoot meese with a gun, so I bet she’d make an expert negotiator with Syria or Iran.

If McCain were running McDonalds, he’d start an ad campaign with the slogan, “Have it your way.” Come on, it’s sad enough that the party in power is trying to say that electing them again is “change,” but they’re literally using, “That’s not change, it’s more of the same,” to describe Obama. I guess it’s working.

Rush Limbaugh makes better than $50 million a year. I don’t believe that there is $50 million to be made selling advertising for select comfort beds, Nevada incorporation paperwork, and flowers. I have convinced myself that he is funded in large part by the oil interests.

Shell engineers estimate that they can make a profit from oil shale at $30/barrel. We have 16 years of oil offshore and on government land. We have 300 years of oil in shale.

Limbaugh is correct in that Sarah Palin is hot though.

This is presently amusing me, from Ben Smith:

Second to moose references, the most crowd-pleasing detail to date in the Sarah Palin story is that, upon becoming governor, she sought to sell the state plane by putting it on eBay.

    Which is true.

But the rest of the story is that nobody wound up buying it and the state eventually sold it offline at a loss of a half-million dollars.

As Ben Smith notes, though, McCain errantly described this latter portion of the story.

“She took the luxury jet that was acquired by her predecessor and sold it on eBay — made a profit,” he said today in Wisconsin upon being introduced by Palin.

Genetically incapable of factual accuracy, Republicans.

Did you prop the doors open for the poor, abandoned cat?
Did I miss anything this week? I heard some boring, delusional people were yelling and spewing lies on the tee vee.
I’ve had a horrible head/chest cold all week. How many different over-the-counter cold/sleep medications can I mix with Ketel One? And live?
If you have Repub “friends” (the quotes indicate my ambivalence, clearly), how do you not bite your tongue off when they say, of Palin: “I LIKE HER!!”??

I used to merrily listen to my local talk radio station, local show in the morning, Laura Ingram from 9 til noon, Rush, then Dave Ramsey. Laura Ingram has got so freaking shrill recently that it is painful to listen to her, and Rush? Never mind. I listen to Dave Ramsey from 3 to 5, other than that the radio is off. I just can’t stand it. In my car this afternoon Rush was actually trying to tell us how the McCain speech was “measured” and while it was not “awe inspiring” it simply gave a serious story of how McCain was a POW………… GAG.

I have just woken up (it’s 9am Saturday here), and was a skimming the discussion… and was struck by these two comments:

    D. Mason Says:
Here’s the question that’s been bugging me. How are so few people noticing that they’re basically copying Obamas campaign? I watched most of both conventions with a friend who has also been keeping a close eye on the races so far. We both noticed that in addition to running against the Republicans in office, they’re co-opting the Obama campaigns rhetoric and even positions.

    and:

    Napoleon Says:

I have a theory that will be tested in this election and over the next 10 to 25 years, and that is that starting sometime in the 1968 through 1972 period the “swing” portion of the electorate came to pull the lever for the Republicans at the top of the ticket if all things were more or less equal. Basically they became the default choice…

I think that has flipped over the last 2 to 6 years, so that no longer when the Republicans roll this crap out people believe it. To put it another way the curtain has been drawn back. That is not to say everyone suddenly see it, just enough that the Republicans no longer can basically win by default by turning the election into a discussion of these issues.

I think it was Harry Truman who said that given a choice between a fake Republican and a real one, the public will choose the real Republican every time.

If the default has flipped, and the Republicans are now being “fake Democrats”, might those 71.8% win percentages for Obama on 538 be justified?

    She’s a Moooose Eater!

Last night my wife said that she expects a story to come out that Sarah not only shot a moose but immediately after that she ripped a leg off and ate it right there.

    I added:

Then she ate its liver to absorb the spirit and strength of the moose. Afterward, she went over to a tree and marked her territory. Then she picked up the the rest of the moose, tossed it over her shoulder and headed home, carrying it over 250 miles (in one evening!) so that she could feed the starving townspeople. While the town was feasting she quietly cleaned and oiled her rifle.

It’s enough to make male members explode throughout the Republican party!

The tears of Keith Olbermann!! What a bunch of BS. “I knew several people in the twin towers”. He says what a disgrace to show the events of 9/11. I say we need to be reminded. I have never heard anyone forget about or ban 12/7 and Pearl Harbor. I have been reminded every year of my life, of Peal Harbor, I feel no offense. I see the real footage and the movies associated with it each year on Dec 7th. Why does he have to excuse anyone from his comment? He is a pussy. He saw reality, my heart goes out to all who were lost. Maybe we should strike the terrible event from history to appease th left. I and my entire family are New Yorkers. What a puss.

GEW Says: [In a previous thread]

A few random reactions to the RNC, from an Obama supporting, MUP-juice drinkin’, ol’ school lefty liberal:

    …

I was confused when still-President Bush called us (me?) the “Angry Left”: he was predicting our (my?) reaction to the RNC in general. To wit: I AM REALLY FUCKING ANGRY AT THESE PEOPLE!

    – Fuck Godwin’s law; I’m sayin’ it: they’re fascists! Fascists fascists fascists! From “Country First” to the (fake) military show, to the war war war rhetoric, to Gov. Palin’s 36 minute hate, to the “always proud of our country” (including Abu Ghraib, I imagine), to the crowd roaring for blood Blood BLOOD! Literally speaking: These people hate our freedoms.

    – They didn’t just dismiss Sen. Obama’s community organizing experience; they didn’t just belittle his past: they mocked the very idea, the very notion of community organizing in general. Thanks a lot! I’m sure that all the people whose jobs have been protected, whose children have been given health care, whose very fucking lives have been saved by community organizers are very, very grateful.

    – How DARE they use WTC footage? I WAS THERE, ASSHOLES! I saw that plane hit from my fucking bedroom window! I tasted the ashes and saw the bodies fall! I KNOW WHAT TERRORISM IS, and I do not appreciate you exploiting video footage of people dying, people that I FUCKING PERSONALLY KNEW, in order to justify more wars. Hey GOP: why is it that the two cities that were attacked by terrorists are overwhelmingly supporing the Democratic party? Because we take it fucking seriously!

    – You want “uppity”? I’ll show you fucking “uppity,” motherfuckers! ALL THE WAY UP TO THE WHITE HOUSE.

I’ve said it in the past (half jokingly), but I’m dead serious now: if the Republicans win the presidency, after all we’ve been through and all they stand for, I will leave the country that I love, in tears and disgrace. Because I won’t love it anymore.

(Sorry for the rant. Safe travels, Mr. Cole!)

Sorry for the long quote… this is the best (and most accurate) rant I have seen for ages, and that kind of righteous anger deserved another airing…

I think it was Harry Truman who said that given a choice between a fake Republican and a real one, the public will choose the real Republican every time.

He had a point, but I am also kind of sick of the way I see this trotted out everytime someone is pissed at a Dem for making some reasonable compromise or other (I’m not saying you did this, but I hear it a lot when it isn’t warranted).

    Random Musings:
I’m wondering if I was wrong in my initial reaction to Palin.
On one hand she is polling well and, for some reason I can’t grock, a lot of people seem to honestly like her and NOT find her creepy.
On the other hand I still think she is going to be scandal bait – she has so much baggage. There are two levels to this. On one hand there are the political scandals, like the growing Troopergate and earmarks and lies about policy. On the other there is the personal “scandals”, like the pregnant daughter, which has no political relevance but will be tabloid fodder, as will the “affair” rumors and will produce all sorts of covers with so-called “scandals” that will be seen by millions on the covers in check-out lines. And that’s assuming it’s all false – if any of it is true then it will just be worse.

For an old Pol’, who is established, this might be survivable because s/he already has an established reputation – we know Clinton is a poon-hound so we’re not shocked by it. She is a fresh face, however, that has only 2 months to be introduced to America … and now it’s inevitable that much of the talk over those two months are going to be about pre-existing scandals. Plus she has ENEMIES – even her supporters acknowledge this – and some of them are going to hit her back. When people you know that well and that long talk decide to air your dirty secrets or even just invent some to spread around ….. its usually damaging.

    Anyways, I’ve vented …..

I really liked “She’s Gone” and “Did It In A Minute”. I don’t go back and listen to them very often, but when one of their songs slips past on the shuffle I appreciate it.

As far as Sarah Palin being hot, forty years ago I had a penpal from England during high school and into college. Writing back and forth she became in some ways my best friend. She was smart and funny when she was an ocean away, but when she came over to visit she was crazy. A friend of mine told me, “She just needs a good ****.” Now it turned out that that’s what I needed. My penpal was still crazy though. Nothing but trouble down that bad road.

There are many warning signs to keep yourself disinterested with Mrs. Palin on many different levels. I suspect that many men have regretted decisions regarding her, with more regret on the way.

A name you might be hearing soon is Brad Hanson, former half owner of a car wash in Anchorage, Alaska.
Another might be a soon to be deployed son-of-a-gov, that spent his senior year in Portage, Michigan playing hockey to avoid the pulic scrutiny of his home town, Wasilla, AK, for damages caused when school buses were vandalized.
I sure hope the soon-to-be written movie does justice to the drama.

I know Dick Morris is a sack of green pus, but this article is a work of art in wingnuttery.

The turning point was the designation of Palin and the personal attacks on her. By stirring up a storm, Democrats assured that Palin would speak to 37 million Americans – just a million fewer than watched Obama’s acceptance speech.

Apparently, Morris took a poll in his head to come up with this analysis.

    From today’s ABC poll

“Do you think [see below] does or does not have the kind of experience it takes to serve effectively as president, if that became necessary?

Obama talks about working together and change and reaching across the aisle and really means it (and might just make those things work).

McCain spouts lines about the same things but as cover for the real agenda of the Republican party – staying in power.

If the American public is looking for leadership and change and bipartisanship, I just hope 51% of them are listening hard enough to work out which side actually cares about those good “Republican values” like family and patriotism and community service and looking after the troops.

We both agreed that Hall and Oates have aged better than Billy Joel’s music, though.

For me, Hall and Oates have aged completely out of memory. Even reading through the comments, “Maneater” was the only title that conjured up a tune or lyrics. I found them forgettable at the time, and I’ve apparently forgotten them.

Billy Joel, OTOH, remains interesting across the decades. “No Man’s Land” from River of Dreams is a kick-ass song about the spread of the ‘burbs over the landscape. I’ve been reading Perlstein’s Before the Storm lately, and about once every twenty pages, something from “We Didn’t Start the Fire” pops up. The Stranger is a great album: “Movin’ Out” and “Only the Good Die Young” are great fun, “Just the Way You Are” is a terrific love song, rising above its cocktail-lounge-style music. Billy Joel’s niche was good pop music with the occasional bit of intelligence and insight mixed in.

I was listening to his stuff in my early 20s, I’m still listening to it in my mid-50s, and I’ll be listening to it in my late 80s if I live that long, which is a good bet.

Hall and Oates did a really nice cover of the Righteous Brothers’ “Loving Feeling.” The extended version on youtube is readily available.

I think it was Sam Rayburn, not Truman, who said that if “you give the voters a choice between two Republicans, they’ll choose the real one everytime.” I agree that that maxim seems applicable in reverse this year. Dewey said something similar – that voters would choose the liberal over a conservative every time; sadly that doesn’t seem applicable anymore; except perhaps also in reverse.

From thinkprogress.org (video also available there):
Partial transcript: (foreign policy experience dealing with Russia:
GREGG JARRETT: She has no national security issue – experience. It’s pretty brave of that campaign to put her out there on that, isn’t it?

TYLER HARBER (GOP strategist): It is. You know, one of the things we – one of the most important things that we tell our clients in the political realm is, “Do not be reactive.” If you become reactive, you are going to lose.

I think what you saw last night was Obama being reactive. Current polling shows him trailing McCain when it comes to trust about national security, trust about the war in Iraq, and trust about the war on terrorism. What you are seeing is the Obama campaign becoming reactive.

Now as far as Sarah’s comments, Sarah has dealt with, and has more experience from an administrative standpoint than Obama has. She has visited the Middle East as many times

JARRETT: But she has no foreign policy experience. She doesn’t know anything about —

HARBER: But she does. She does have foreign policy experience.

    JARRETT: She does?

HARBER: Now let me point out, she’s worked with Russia – she’s worked with Russia on fishing issues. She’s worked with Canada on transportation issues.

JARRETT: In what capacity has she worked with Russia?

HARBER: She worked with permitting issues and with fishing issues dealing with the sea fishing industry there in Alaska.

JARRETT: Oh, come on. That’s a far cry from major international experience.

HARBER: But that’s still more experience than Obama has.

JARRETT: You guys are going to have a field day with that right? Mary Anne?

    DEM STRATIGIST: That’s laughable.

That seems to be the opinion of all the cro-mangnon wingnutz stuck in 1953. They say inherently sexist remarks like: “She’s a spunky gal”. “She’s a hot mom”. 12/7 – we weren’t afraid
12/7 – Japan never attacked us again!

9/11 – 11 of the terrorists were from Saudi Arabia
9/11 – we were told the enemy we were to fight was not a country but an ideology
9/11 – caused us to go to Afghanistan to take the fight to al Qaeda; but then the Bush Administration decided it was more important to depose Saddam Hussein in Iraq
    9/11 divided the country
9/11 – caused people to trade their freedoms for security because they were told to be afraid
9/11 – we did not have clear leadership, and haven’t since that time
9/11 – instead of being told to band together and work for a cause greater than ourselves, we were told to go shopping
9/11 – After we invaded Iraq, we did not have the major backing of the world, instead we lost the respect of the world
9/11 – changed nothing to those of us who saw it as another terrorist incident (they happen all over the world, quite often), it only changed everything for those who bought into the idea that they should be very afraid. Those very same people who tell us that we need to stay vigilant because another attack might just be around the corner (and you pray for it, so that you’re side wins the divisive political contest).

Your 9/11 is no longer a symbol of anything but fear, a fear many Americans no longer buy into, so shove it.

12/7 was about a brave country standing up for what is right; 9/11 has turned into a travesty by a bunch of whining pussies who have no clue what they are really fighting, why, how to end it, or what the whole situation was about. Instead they have to lie and say “they hate us for our freedoms” – the very freedoms their favorite president stole from us.

    Go suck gasoline, and swallow.

We threw out our fascist, right wing, lying scumsucker, George Bush fellating government last year.

    It’s your turn next.

    Make it so, please!

I’m about to go anarchy-bitch if this shit keeps up another couple of years.

It just occurred to me that “Blockwatch” is a form of community organizing. What terrible people we are for trying to make our neighborhood safer.

GOTV is community organizing too. I suppose the McCain/Palin campaign doesn’t need to make phone calls, or go door to door or put signs up since that would be like……… so organizational.

John, John…I mostly agree with you, and mostly keep silent.

But for you to diss a man with two first names, well, that’s over the line. Especially since he had the good grace to shut down Shea Stadium, which, despite the good things that happened there, has long been a nasty, ugly, white elephant here in Queens.

Besides, “Stiletto” kicks “Maneater”‘s coccyx :-)

We both agreed that Hall and Oates have aged better than Billy Joel’s music, though.

Well, that’s as fact-free as anything you’ll get from Limbaugh.

BTW, I say this as a fan of both of them, and as someone who has seen each of them in performance more than once. Billy Joel is, indeed, The Entertainer, both live and on record/tape/CD/mp3/whatever. Hall and Oates are, well, Hall and Oates.

    De gustibus non est disputandum.
