Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

This fight is for everything.

Not all heroes wear capes.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

“woke” is the new caravan.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

WTF is going on with sitemeter? I have toyed with it for two hours, and can not figure out how to find out who is referring traffic.

This thing sucks. Does anyone have a suggestion on a replacement?

The only thing missing from this post is :”WE’LL DO IT LIVE!!!!” J/K

I’ve used statcounter http://www.statcounter.com/ with some success, but it’s a freebie so you get what you pay for.

Forgive me if you know all this already, but they did a major switchover to a new whatever this weekend. Mine is totally gone from my personal site, but my cats still have one on their blog! Theirs does not click through to the stats page, however, but to the main sitemeter (new) homepage.

As I have about 5 of them on various sites, I did go thru this morn and get them all linked up to the same acct, allegedly, but still could not get the referral stats we are used to. I went round and round for a long while, before full caffination, and just gave up. I am just hoping by tomorrow it magically reappears and functions as it used to. (All mine are free and the basic models, btw.)

The referral information is called path report and is part of the premium package now. You can still find out who referred to you, but it requires a click for every hit. It is under visit report, and if you click on each entry, it expands and shows you tons of information, including the referral.

Speaking of site traffic, this new post at Sullivan’s says a lot.
Sort of hints around the edge of the “intimidation” factor he hinted around the edge of earlier this weekend.
Good to see him on fire again over Palin, et al.

Oh [email protected]@K! It’s Ketel One O’clock and my tape is all rewound (yes, VHS) to SNL’s opening.

    Sullivan:

The Dish is now Technorati’s highest ranked one-person mainly political blog in the world. Not bad for someone who’s gone “insane”. The marketplace obviously disagrees. And you know what real conservatives believe about markets, don’t you?

Yep. When the marketplace doesn’t give you what you want, you must regulate the shit out of it to your favor.

Google analytics is quite nice. You put a line of the code into your footer template and will get very nice reports.

I just came over here from trying to get into Americablog, but when that site comes up, it immediately switches me over to some kind of sitemeter search. I don’t think you’re the only one having troubles with it.

Sitemeter is in the process of switching back to the old system. The new system apparently crashed under the load; I expect they will try to roll out the new system again once they work out whatever kinks caused the crash.

Uhm, Take the IIS logs or whatever your web server is and run analytics packages on them? It’s not hard to parse, HTTP GET or HTTP POST, and your response.

That only works if you have access to the server software, such as if you run IIS on your own computer. Most webhosts don’t give you that kind of access, for obvious reasons.

Statcounter. The free version gives info on the most recent 500 page hits rather than Sitemeter’s 100 individual hits, info on users is sometimes more specific, and on the “visitor paths” page you can see who individual readers are, how they arrived at your blog, and what page they arrived at, info that Sitemeter keeps on separate pages.

You don’t have to stick to one. Me, I’ve had some bad experience with getting summarily locked out of my Google accounts (just *try* to get Google to respond to you as a human being), so while I use Analytics, I also use Statcounter (rarely a problem, there).

Why do you need to know the traffic? Wondering who is so infatuated with WordPress Error?

But as noted above, GOS is killing you. Every time Kos links you to the front page (often, in the last few weeks) you last about 3 minutes and then go tits up for 4 hours or so.

It’s like 2 clicks to set your IIS logs to a particular directory, which can be a Virtual Directory link if needed so you can run your own analytics.

The problemspace is pretty trivial compared to my current project, running predictive analytics against a site that gets 5 million + hits a day.

Speaking of Sully, this is from K Lo’s house of crazy, via Sully:

There was an hour-long special on tonight. I don’t have major complaints save for … did we need to be told Track was born eight months after Todd and Sarah eloped?

Seriously, did I miss this? So Palin had sex outside of marriage? But it’s ok because she then got married? And her values were so strongly imposed on her kids that one of them did the same thing?

Isn’t there something about those in glass houses… Or maybe the one about logs and eyes. Can’t quite remember how those go, but I think they might apply here.

    Fucking hypocrites.

    From Americablog:

The site was down for some people because Sitemeter, a company a lot of us use for our visitor counts, upgraded their service today – and it proceeded to stop our site from loading. Lovely. I reverted back to the old code, so hopefully this will work. I’m noticing traffic already coming back, so it should be fine now. Sorry about that.
