Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

Not loving this new fraud based economy.

“Perhaps I should have considered other options.” (head-desk)

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Dear Washington Post, you are the darkness now.

The words do not have to be perfect.

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

Since we are repeating ourselves, let me just say fuck that.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

We still have time to mess this up!

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

Tide comes in. Tide goes out. You can’t explain that.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

People are complicated. Love is not.

Disappointing to see gov. newsom with his finger to the wind.

“Loving your country does not mean lying about its history.”

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Did He Call Her a Trollop?

Carly gets chucked under the bus:

A top McCain official contacted by CNN said, on condition on anonymity, “No big deal, but not how you get on the surrogate all-star team. Very Biden-like.”

“This campaign source said Fiorina would be discouraged from additional media interviews.

Another top campaign adviser was far less diplomatic.

“Carly will now disappear,” this source said. “Senator McCain was furious.” Asked to define “disappear,” this source said, adding that she would be off TV for a while – but remain at the Republican National Committee and keep her role as head of the party’s joint fundraising committee with the McCain campaign.

Fiorina was booked for several TV interviews over the next few days, including one on CNN. Those interviews have been canceled.

You would think they would want her to disappear for the simple fact that it doesn’t make sense to be attacking corporate greed and golden parachutes when you top surrogate ran a company into aground and then jetted off with tens of millions.

How the hell is McCain going to throw Fiorina and Gramm under the bus without getting “Tire Tracks All Across [His] Back”?

    QFT.

Didn’t some other McCain surrogate who is married to a member of British peerage get caught referring to Obama as “elitist”? Takes one to know one, I guess…

You have to admit, she knows a lot about how not to run a company. She’s one of the best at it.

Lynn Forester de Rothschild. Yes, of that Rothschild family.

Antisemites across the world tilt their heads in confusion.

But who will keep up the sexism patrol?

You know, I had a very interesting experience. Thanks to Ike and its aftermath, we were kind of reduced to basic needs and were so focused on each day that I found I didn’t care one whit about politics. Now that I’m sitting in my sister’s cozy (and powered) house in another part of the state I can care again. I feel like I just had a reminder of what life is like for a large chunk of people – it’s a good lesson.

I guess it’s too much to hope that she’ll pull a Geraldine Ferraro and blast the Republicans now…

    But that would require integrity!

Tsk. You don’t just make Carly disappear that easily. You give her a few tens of millions of dollars and then she fucks off and stops screwing things up. Hell, worked for HP.

Course, I wouldn’t suggest she takes shares in the McCain campaign, after this week.

    No, no, no.

As we all know, the Republican platform includes completely ignoring hypocrisy. It just doesn’t happen, and none of them ever get in trouble for it because how can you get busted for something that doesn’t exist?

Carly’s mistake was admitting that the Republican bozos who have run this country for so long as not qualified to have real jobs, like running Fortune 500 companies, which just goes to show the level of respect they have for “the most powerful job in the world”. The Republican candidates are second-class brains with third-rate skillsets that no stockholder would ever trust. (In the case of Palin, that’s clearly being generous.)

And that’s who they’ve got running again this year, but you’re not supposed to let the rabble in on the Big Joke.

Carly also admitted these Republican candidates are window-dressing for corporate power brokers like herself.

She was canned for being too complimentary to Obama.

Saying McCain, Palin AND (usually editted out) Obama, Biden could not run a major corporation is actually a compliment. How are those big companies doing right now?

I said this before when they dumped Phil Gramm, but a higher tolerance for gaffes would benefit Dems–not because we make more, but because gaffes are inevitable. A hair-trigger on gaffes objectively favors the party with the more replaceable advisors. I.e., they lose Gramm and Fiorina, whose shopworn cliches can be replicated by any AEI hack, but we lose singular people like Samantha Power and Wesley Clark.
