We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

The real work of an opposition party is to oppose.

This is not Michael Dukakis, worried libs:

BTW- Did you know that we now are major sponsors of Manchester United. I had a roommate from Newcastle, so I was always a Newcastle United fan, myself. This was back in the days of Andy Cole, and I still know the cheers:

Andy Cole! Andy Cole!
It’s Andy, Andy Cole.
When he gets the ball he scores a goal,
It’s Andy, Andy Cole.

I guess now that we are on the hook for AIG, I will need to learn some new cheers.

You have to forgive our skittishness–we’re not used to having someone with this sort of command as a candidate on the national level. I never freaked, though I will admit to some queasiness when 538’s numbers went McCain’s way for a bit. But I had a feeling this would even out, and I’m excited about the next two months again.

    Step 1: Compliment John McCain.

Step 2: Say you’re “disappointed’ in John’s recent conduct. Where’s the old John?

Step 3: Rip him a new one, using his own words against him.

    Step 4: Profit!

I’m still a worried liberal, but that has nothing to do with Obama or his campaign, which continues to impress me. It’s just that in 2004 I was very confident Bush could not possibly win, and I am still shell shocked the nation would re-elect a President who had lead us into a war of aggression under false pretenses that had turned into such a disaster, and who had shown himself in the debates (yet again) to be utterly unfit for the office he was seeking. So I will remain a worried liberal until the votes have been counted and recounted; I have been very badly burned.

It’s just that in 2004 I was very confident Bush could not possibly win…

That was the year that I decided that Americans are largely terrified of having anyone the least bit smarter than they are as President. They run their lives on misinformation, preconceived ideas and gut instinct and they vote for people just like them because they’re the salt of the earth, the common clay, you know…

Sarah Palin is the (so far) ultimate embodiment of these voters’ mindset and no matter how this election turns out we haven’t heard the last of her.

    Andrew “Andy” Cole
In February 1993, Division One leaders Newcastle United splashed out a then club record £1.75 million for his services. He then scored 12 goals in as many league games.

On January 10, 1995, Cole was suddenly sold in a shock deal to Manchester United for a deal worth £7 million – £6 million cash plus £1 million-rated Keith Gillespie going in the opposite direction, setting a new record for most expensive British transfer at the time – a record only to be broken six months later by Stan Collymore’s £8.5million move from Nottingham Forest to Liverpool.

He was United’s top scorer again in 1999-00 with 19 goals in 28 Premiership games. He collected his fourth Premiership title medal in five seasons, and scored over 20 goals in all competitions for the third successive season.

    From Reuters:

Capping a week that has reshaped Wall Street, U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson urged Congress to quickly agree on a program for huge purchases of bad debts held by banks and other financial institutions. Lawmakers promised fast action.

By all means, hurry. Don’t bother with any quid pro quos or bothersome re-regulation. And for God’s sake, don’t raise taxes on investment income or impose transaction fees. There are 300 million men, women and children in the US. If we each mail a little over $3200 to the Bush administration then this particular trillion-dollar bailout will be paid for. Of course as it becomes apparent how many of the “assets” that this house of crap is built on are worth exactly dick they’ll be back for another trillion or two, or three, so keep your checkbooks handy.

So I’ve seen some people suggest that when McCain used the phrase “gaming the system”, it was a subtle racist jab at Obama. I guess the expression is widely used on the right to refer to how African Americans use welfare. They “game the system”, so they don’t have to work.

Just saw a CNN vid of Sen. Shelby playing point man for the senate on the “Mother of All Bailouts”(Right, the Great Depression never happened, Shelb). I haven’t seen a peep out Senate Democrats on this issue. Why the fuck is Shelby being allowed to make the repugs look like saints? Before you kow it, McCain will be imitating him ole’Shelb.

now i’m actually worried Obama’s going to go after McCain too hard: the press is starting to call some of his ads unfair.

If Obama doesn’t go after McCain, Republicans and the press call him a pussy. If he does, he’s smearing. If he is in the middle, he’s indecisive. And you have concern trolling (some well intentioned) with mountains of worry about what the impact could be. It’s all based on this bogus idea there’s some line of attack of message that won’t get beaten up by the Republicans or the Republican-friendly press. That’s just wishful thinking.

Obama needs to just fucking do whatever he wants/thinks and stop fucking apologizing. Don’t listen to Mark Penn or anything, but otherwise, stop talking about what we’re going to do, and start doing it.

Yes, in addition to that the outside of this the Dems should be working the “refs” (the press) – spoon-feed them stories and insist they’ll be failing at their job unless they cover Palin’s lies, or McCain’s incestuous relationship with his adopted daughter (I swear, I have proof), whatever.

Republicans never apologize, and they’re out there calling Obama a NAMBLA member. In fact, when questioned, they double-down, say it’s 100% true and tell you to fuck off.

Given the much higher veracity-level of Obama’s attack ads, I feel 100% confident in him standing behind every word and telling the press they have two choices: Stop equivocating and using GOP talking points ; and FOAD.

    Not Dukakis

I sure hope the Obama campaign has at least a dozen staffers whose sole responsibility is to screen any head wear Obama might be tempted to put on. I think he can win this, even with all the racists, as long as he goes hatless, helmetless, scarfless, capless, and every other -less until after November 4.

That also means no uniforms, hazmat suits, ethnic or tribal outfits, or other unusual garb. Suits, sports shirts and long pants (those knees could be knobby) from now until election day.

There are some areas where playing it safe is the way to go.

A trip down memory lane. There was a photo of Bush with his flight helmet on (Mission Accomplished Day — a mandatory holiday in red states). He looked almost as ridiculous as Dukakis did on the tank, but the media didn’t circulate the photograph.

For some reason they preferred the heroic enhanced codpiece shot.

For the last two years I’ve been a Liverpool supporter.

They beat Man U 2-1 last Sunday.

    Why do I hate America?
