    You have to forgive our skittishness–we’re not used to having someone with this sort of command as a candidate on the national level. I never freaked, though I will admit to some queasiness when 538’s numbers went McCain’s way for a bit. But I had a feeling this would even out, and I’m excited about the next two months again.

    I’m still a worried liberal, but that has nothing to do with Obama or his campaign, which continues to impress me. It’s just that in 2004 I was very confident Bush could not possibly win, and I am still shell shocked the nation would re-elect a President who had lead us into a war of aggression under false pretenses that had turned into such a disaster, and who had shown himself in the debates (yet again) to be utterly unfit for the office he was seeking. So I will remain a worried liberal until the votes have been counted and recounted; I have been very badly burned.

    So I’ve seen some people suggest that when McCain used the phrase “gaming the system”, it was a subtle racist jab at Obama. I guess the expression is widely used on the right to refer to how African Americans use welfare. They “game the system”, so they don’t have to work.

    I think the simpler explanation might be that McCain has lost his fucking marbles, but that could just be me.

    I had the same thought. The ad with the Limbaugh quotes that John posted about yesterday was skirting the line, IMO. I hope they dial back on that kind of stuff a little – the McCain campaign is such a target-rich environment, they really don’t need to stretch to make him look bad.

    If Obama doesn’t go after McCain, Republicans and the press call him a pussy. If he does, he’s smearing. If he is in the middle, he’s indecisive. And you have concern trolling (some well intentioned) with mountains of worry about what the impact could be. It’s all based on this bogus idea there’s some line of attack of message that won’t get beaten up by the Republicans or the Republican-friendly press. That’s just wishful thinking.

    Obama needs to just fucking do whatever he wants/thinks and stop fucking apologizing. Don’t listen to Mark Penn or anything, but otherwise, stop talking about what we’re going to do, and start doing it.

    Yes, in addition to that the outside of this the Dems should be working the “refs” (the press) – spoon-feed them stories and insist they’ll be failing at their job unless they cover Palin’s lies, or McCain’s incestuous relationship with his adopted daughter (I swear, I have proof), whatever.

    I sure hope the Obama campaign has at least a dozen staffers whose sole responsibility is to screen any head wear Obama might be tempted to put on. I think he can win this, even with all the racists, as long as he goes hatless, helmetless, scarfless, capless, and every other -less until after November 4.

    That also means no uniforms, hazmat suits, ethnic or tribal outfits, or other unusual garb. Suits, sports shirts and long pants (those knees could be knobby) from now until election day.

    There are some areas where playing it safe is the way to go.

    A trip down memory lane. There was a photo of Bush with his flight helmet on (Mission Accomplished Day — a mandatory holiday in red states). He looked almost as ridiculous as Dukakis did on the tank, but the media didn’t circulate the photograph.

    For some reason they preferred the heroic enhanced codpiece shot.
