Make it 3-0.

4:25 pm- I guess knocking your opponent out is one way to force a fumble.

5:50 pm- Steelers are looking pretty damned flat, and I see WVU is not the only team out there that refuses to tackle.

7:06 pm- I have not seen our o-line look this bad since the days of Leon “Swing Door” Searcy, when he would stand at the line of scrimmage and wave the defense through like a matador. My brother even called him Le Leon.

I’m not too optimistic seeing as they’re down 21-3 in the beginning of the second quarter. But if I were optimistic, I wouldn’t be a Saints fan.

This looks like as good a thread as any to put this in, so here I go. Earlier this morning, I wrote to Dean Baker about the transaction tax idea. One of the questions/comments I wrote went as follows:

    2. I’m not sure of my opinion on the bail outs just yet. I’m not an expert on this stuff by any stretch, and after spending about ten hours away from the computer yesterday and coming home to see a proposed $700 billion bail out, it seems like things are changing so quickly that I’ll never catch up. (I’m trying, however.) At the very least, I’m open to the idea that the problem became so severe that it might–MIGHT–justify some sort of bail out. However, it’s going to cost us, so perhaps a transaction tax, at the levels you suggest raising what you say it could raise, might be a good idea if for no other reason than it might force the people who are involved in these transactions to pay for the government covering their asses

    His response?

    Yes.

As if the fact that he got back to me a mere few hours later, I now know it’s not an economically perverse idea to support the transaction tax for that reason.

He also said that Robert Rubin and people like him were designing the economic policies for the Democrats, so that’s the reason a policy like this, which there’s really no good argument against, wouldn’t be enacted. I realize Obama is more of a center-left guy than a “leftist”,” but I hope that somehow, this idea gets pitched to him. It’s good on so many levels.

I’m not sure if the Steelers’ offensive line knew it was okay to, you know, step in front of the blitzers, or push them, in something. Maybe someone told them that the rules had been changed to “one Mississippi” for this game.

This is off topic but worth mentioning: Obama has released a fairly sensible statement about requirements for an acceptable bailout, and Pelosi is making similar noises, while Bush and the House Republican leadership are insisting on a blank check (as I understand the bill, there’s nothing stopping Paulson from pocketing the $700 billion and retiring), and McCain is keeping mum.

Again, I apologize for the threadjack, and I know Pelosi is likely to cave, but at least Obama seems to be aware – where’s McCain?

P.S. I also apologize for the lack of links, a consequence of commenting by phone; no cut-and-paste. Start at TPM and Brad Delong.

You should try being a Tennessee fan sometime.

As a UCLA Alumnus/Fan, I’d like to thank the Volunteers on behalf of all Bruin Fans for assuring at least 1 win this year; apparently, having no Quarterback (the first 2 strings are done for the season) makes it hard to win in football. Who knew? But for the UT kicker hooking one, we had a real chance of going Zero for the year (wins, not offensive touchdowns).

And for the Dawgs in the house, I think Rick is on a very, VERY tight leash in Westwood.

Wooooooo, IGGLES! That was a squeaker. I hope Westbrook isn’t seriously injured. We were eating dinner with my parents after halftime, so we missed the last half. I nearly freaked when I heard Donovan left the game, but it sounded not too terribly serious. And they had just spent 10 minutes talking about how GREAT McNabb looked and how great it is to have him healthy again. So the keyword here is SHUT THE HELL UP about McNabb’s health!
