I used to hunt. This disgusts me. It’s worse than the local deer hunters that run deer with dogs, wait at the edge of the woods and then shoot them as the dogs chase the deer into the clear. Pack mentality hunters and precious little sport to it.

Why anyone would deer hunt with dogs is beyond me. Not only is it unsporting, the deer is killed with the muscles full of adrenaline which ruins the meat.

Country guy here. I grew up on a farm where we slaughtered cows, pigs, chickens. I’ve helped ‘process’ (cut up) deer(never killed any, I’m not that good a shot)…Have no problem with responsible gun owners, and occasionally target shoot.
I have no beef so to speak) with hunters who eat what they kill (the wolves would qualify), but trophy hunting, and this insane idea that killing wild wolves will help the deer/moose/elk/caribou herds (who need a predator to be a healthy population) is whack.
And it’s about as sporting as killing fish in a barrel.

I am disgusted by the video, of course. But I don’t quite see what all you hunters here are talking about, calling it unsporting and cowardly? Isn’t taking on a wild animal at range , with a rifle, pretty cowardly no matter how you cut it? And what’s ‘sporting’ about it? Take down a fucking wolf or a moose with your bare hands, then I’ll respect you.
Then again, I could be mistaken. Not terribly familiar with hunting as a Dutch native. I’d love to hear some of you hunters’ stories about how you engaged an animal on even terms, and actually risked some kind of bodily harm – as opposed to these cowardly airplane hunters.

The photo of these folks in full Wagnerian regalia, with Palin smack dab in the middle, grinning like a fool, is worth more than a 1,000 words. Hunting is one thing. This wolf business is just Mean Girls to the power of 10. Does nothing but reinforce what a backstabbing witch she is.

@8 – mithi – the differnce between the two is miles wide
1) your’e not going to hit the animal correctly from the air, this is largely going to ruin the meat or perforate the bowels which also taints the meat. and from the video sometimes they’re just running the animal until it is almost dead from exaustion.
2) proper safe hunting is hard and time consuming. more importantly no matter how fair it is usually a ‘good’ hunter will use as much meat and animal as they can, as opposed to taking a head for the ‘nifty’ factor.
as for the hunting with dogs….it’s pretty much been done since the dawn of time, so good luck getting rid of that heratige. HOpefully they’re being careful and not hitting thier own dogs.

Still not exchanging behind the scenes emails with "Andrew?" I don’t buy it. The control and manipulation of information dispensed to the masses, and backstage contact with the powerful, is what makes discredited warmongers like Sullivan feel powerful.

Pharniel – sure, I won’t dispute that hunting wolves from airplanes is more cruel. Or that doing something useful with the carcass is more respectable than just leaving it there. What I take issue with is self-proclaimed hunters decrying aerial hunting as ‘cowardly’ and ‘chickenshit’, like it’s suddenly not cowardly or chickenshit if you shoot a defenseless animal from the ground.

Mithi, ethical whitetail deer hunting is pretty difficult. I could take the average person with a genuine desire to harvest a deer, tell them what to do, give them the equipment, and it would still take them years of experience to get one unless they were very lucky. And hunting moose is not nearly as difficult as whitetail hunting.
I and most of my friends subscribe to the line of thought that "you can’t eat the antlers", and to me, there is nothing better tasting or more nutritious than a fresh venison tenderloin bias cut and grilled over charcoal. [cue Homer Simpson’s drooling]
As far as deer hunting with dogs, where I live it is common practice to shoot a dog that’s running deer. No one here hunts deer with dogs and it is seen as a public service to give up the shot at the deer to shoot the dog chasing it.
This video reminds me of the assholes in the 19th century shooting buffalo on the plains just to starve the natives.

I will be the first to admit that I am a city girl who truly doesn’t understand hunting – but is this really hunting? Seriously. This looks a little one of those canned hunts that are staged for wannabes so they can feel manly and powerful.

Many of you here are pretty tired and sorry…and very gullible. There is no way the "hunt" was real. It was manufactured just like the picture with Palin in it…can’t you see how much clearer she is that the others?
Oh, and about the wolves…they are predators and apparently in sufficient numbers to warrant a bounty. That’s how the population is controlled, folks. We don’t hire government hunters to go out and shoot poison darts at them. That’s real life, boys and girls. Get used to it.

Palin did not authorize the bounties to cull the size of the wolf population in Alaska. She authorized them because she just likes the idea of killing wolves from planes.

I have grown up with family members duck hunting my entire life. I had to plan my wedding around duck season and LSU home games. Since I at least understand duck hunting, how is it possible that this is legal and hunting over a baited pond is not? The ducks stand a better chance over the baited pond. This is disgusting and there is absolutely nothing sportsman like about it. At least we eat duck gumbo. It explains a lot to me about Palin.
