Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The Giant Orange Man Baby is having a bad day.

These are not very smart people, and things got out of hand.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the gop

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

In after Baud. Damn.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

It’s pointless to bring up problems that can only be solved with a time machine.

The line between political reporting and fan fiction continues to blur.

If you can’t control your emotions, someone else will.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

She burned that motherfucker down, and I am so here for it. Thank you, Caroline Kennedy.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

I desperately hope that, yet again, i am wrong.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

When I was faster i was always behind.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Hey hey, RFK, how many kids did you kill today?

Post your comments. Personally, I have to compliment Sarah Palin. She has a great ability to use a lot of words to say absolutely nothing. That’s unique.

Uh oh! Maybe Pailin the Impalin could gives us the skinny on this little "cookie jar moment".

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Gov. Sarah Palin charged the state for her children to travel with her, including to events where they were not invited, and later amended expense reports to specify that they were on official business.

Now that’s reform you can believe in!

Over at NBC affiliate KUSA (Colorado), Ms. Palin is quoted as having said this: Report removed.

Fortunately, thinkprogess has an article and dkos ripped the video and posted it to youtube:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l40nrw3V3GA

    Here is the quote:

Q: Brandon Garcia wants to know, “What does the Vice President do?”

PALIN: That’s something that Piper would ask me! … [T]hey’re in charge of the U.S. Senate so if they want to they can really get in there with the senators and make a lot of good policy changes that will make life better for Brandon and his family and his classroom.

OK, so this is old news. I’m sure everyone here has read Article I, Section III of the US Constitution and knows that about the only enumerated power of the Vice Presidency is the right to cast a tie-breaking Senate vote.

However, over at Redstate, it would appear that clown shoes are now being worn by one whoclaims to be a law professor:

    Steven_Willis October 21st, 2008 at 3:27 p.m. CDT (link)

The VP is President of the Senate.

While most VPs have ignored the position other than for the occasional tie-breaking vote, Palin could do otherwise.

The VP is much like a Committee Chair who can: recognize speakers, enforce rules, or even help set agenda, if not more. This is an interesting Constitutional theory and one I hope she pursues.

What the hell? And I note that Moe is there "blamming" anyone’s account who might post a comment in dispute of this man’s statement. Where the hell are they getting this stuff? And what’s a law professor doing trying to argue this position? While not a lawyer, I’ve never heard anything even remotely like this argued by legal scholars before.

One notes that, as others have pointed out, the only enumerated power of the Vice President is to cast a tie-breaking Senate vote. However, the law professor appears to discern extra-constitutional authority to gain committee chairs, recognize speakers, and other rule-making and rule enforcing actions – those typically performed by the Majority Leader. Essentially, from what I glean, he suggests that the Majority Leader position be subsumed by the Vice Presidency.

While nothing in the constitution cedes this authority to the Vice Presidency, I suspect the professor would argue that the precedent of powers handed to the vice presidency by the executive could be extended to the Senates – were they willing. However, it is thoroughly unclear to me how a Republican Vice President could wrest rule-making and other powers from a Democratic Majority Leader.

I would have replied there, but my account at Redstate has been "blammed". I won’t bother creating another one. Moe will just "blam" it again, regardless.

The challenge for Palin at this stage is that these types of interviews aren’t going to do her any good or fundamentally change the perception of her as a nitwit. The only interviews that will make news are those where she screws up royally. She would have to knock a few tough interviews out of the park to begin moving the needle on her favorables. Good luck with that.

You ever heard of the phrase, "disagree without being disagreeable?" Really, what’s wrong with simply stating your opposition to a female political candidate without having to denigrate her? For example, on various liberal blogs, I’ve seen the following terms employed by the oh-so tolerant and enlightened egalitarian left:

    – dumb broad
    – coont
    – b!tch
    – ditz
    – whore
    – MILF (and alternatively, VPILF)
    – beauty queen
    – Caribou Barbie

    …and so on.

If someone refers to BHO as "uppity" or even "boy," you leftists hit the ceiling and squawk endlessly about racist bigotry and the like. But when it comes to Governor Sarah Palin you guys all high-five each other as you unload the nastiest, invective-filled sexist rants — and it’s just peachy keen.

Glenn’s "dumber than a bag of hammers" remark is just one small example among many that typify the rank anti-woman sentiment that’s become par for the course among liberals.

Good ‘un. Quality trolling needs statements like this.

Of course, I’d never get away with a statement like that. I have a girl friend.

You ever heard of the phrase, "disagree without being disagreeable?"

Okay, tell you what: why don’t you, Palin, and her supporters demonstrate that for us and we’ll try to follow along.

Let’s suppose for a minute that Sen. McCain had picked a different Republican woman Governor to run with, say, Gov. Jodi Rell of Connecticut.

In that case, we wouldn’t be saying the Republican VP candidate was ‘dumber than a bag of hammers’, because that claim would be self-evidently not true.

See, it isn’t that all women Republican politicians are dumber than a bag of hammers, it’s just Sarah. (Well, Michelle Bachman too).

You’re really not being fair to the Moose Queen. No matter what happens with the campaign, she’s been smart enough to get herself a really nice wardrobe out of the whole adventure. And it didn’t cost her a penny. Now that’s household budgeting you can believe in.

The trick to saying nothing is too just run off a series of labels, especially of the keyword kind. A is B because B is C because C will make you D because everybody knows D is F because F has G …. It’s all just endless name calling and unsubstantiated opinion.

Contrast that to reasonable speech such as Powell’s justification for his Obama endorsement. I endorse Obama because he exhibited favorable characteristics A, B, and C via actions D, E, F which McCain did not. McCain exhibited unfavorable characteristics G, H, I via actions J, K, L which Obama did not. Obama has exhibited more favorability than McCain therefore I endorse him for President.
