Beware the Scary Black Man Who Wants to Take Your Guns!

First, Barack Obama supports gun ownership rights (although he may not want you to own, say, a Howitzer). Second, you know the NRA chose this picture for a reason. Evil-looking black man. Scary.

I would think that a Scary Negro who WANTED to own guns would be the scare tactic. It would seem a Black man who’d legislate to ban glocks would be more reassuring to rich old crackers

This is like the NRA freaking out when Wilder wanted to limit handgun purchases in Virginia to one a month. Because God knows I just have to buy 10 at a clip.

To the NRA, that’s the same thing as being completely anti-gun.

I heard a campaign ad on the local country-and-western nostalgia station that went something like this:

Gettin’ up early, takin’ your son out huntin’ and fishin’, that’s part of life here in Montana.

And I thought, hoo-boy, here it comes, something about how Obama wants to take your guns away. Then they pulled the old switcheroo:

But John McCain is out of touch with Montana. He voted to restrict access for hunters and fishermen to public lands.

and so on. I don’t remember what else they hit him with, but it sounded like your stereotypical "Democrats hate hunters" ad. Except it was "McCain hates hunters."

The times they are a changin.

Right, but the Scary Black Man isn’t planning to ban glocks, he’s planning to take your guns and keep them for himself.

It’s just like how McCain talks about Obama "spreading the wealth." He actually phrases it as though Obama himself (not the government) will be getting your tax money and spending it where he pleases.

That you approvingly used a link to factcheck.org proves you are in bed with the terrorists, likely in unreal America. See NRA’s Factcheck And Brady Campaign Share Same Sugar Daddy

NRA political leadership has gone batshit loony over Obama. They’ve budgeted $40 million this election cycle with 15 of it directly targeting Obama. Their premier site for ‘conservative’ gun thought in the political arena: GunBaNObama. Cute. There you would learn that even if the scary black man is not successful in taking or keeping you from buying new guns, he will outlaw your hunting ammo. Real America is at risk.

My Very Popular Democratic Governor, on gun rights and the Presidential race:

HELENA – While defending Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s record, Gov. Brian Schweitzer said Tuesday that Montana voters whose main issue is guns might consider voting for Libertarian presidential candidate Bob Barr instead of either Obama or Republican John McCain.

Looks like Brian believes that the third-party races may be the tipping point that delivers Montana to Obama.

First, Barack Obama supports gun ownership rights

    B.S.
Illinois State Rifle Association Executive Director Richard Pearson Issues Open Letter to Nation’s Sportsmen Regarding Obama’s History in the Illinois Senate

I lobbied Barack Obama extensively while he was an Illinois State Senator. As a result of that experience, I know Obama’s attitudes toward guns and gun owners better than anyone. The truth be told, in all my years in the Capitol I have never met a legislator who harbors more contempt for the law-abiding firearm owner than does Barack Obama.

As for the Hackcheck Factcheck article linked to where they refute the NRA’s claims by uncritically quoting from the Obama campaign.

And this is why I outright refuse to join the NRA, as I just find that they are practically a wing of the Republican Party. Gun Owners of America is an organization I can give a little more respect; they trash both Obama and McCain relatively fairly when it comes to gun rights legislation. Hell, they used to have an article on the site stating that McCain might actually be worse than Obama when it comes to gun rights (mainly due to people actually remembering the Constitution exists when there’s a Democrat in the Oval Office…) while endorsing Ron Paul.

Still, GOA’s seemingly "no compromise" stance isn’t something I agree with either.

More on Factcheck and the NRA.

    FactCheck gets unhinged.

The author of the anti-NRA post goes off on John Lott for asking questions:

Regarding Obama’s work with the Joyce Foundation, Jackson said, “You are an academic? You are asking about the Joyce Foundation? What does that have to do with anything? You would have failed the freshman college logic test.”

So past associations have no bearing?

The rest of his responses are just as hysteric:

“They are lying. This is what they do. This is how they make their money. Do these people have no shame? They are just making this up. I just wish that they would tell the truth.” He said that their ads were “one of the worst examples of lying” that he had “ever seen.”

    "this is what they do".

So he has a preconceived opinion while claiming to be impartial.

    So much for ‘facts’.

Even funnier Barack Obama supports gun ownership rights is so strong that the former Hangun Control Inc. endorses him.

Generally folks here don’t take well to mind-readers. If Obama harbors this "contempt for the law-abiding firearm owner" it’s certainly been something he’s kept well-hidden. Really, is the best that trolls can come up with? One lobbyist from a pro-gun organization disparaging a Democrat?

Real good rebuttal there buddy. Keep up the good work — in 12 days you can start writing about black helicopters and nonsense like that.

    October 24, 2008 at 12:38 pm

    @Paul L.:
    From Richard Pearson’s letter:

Although Obama claims to be an advocate for the 2nd Amendment, his voting record in the Illinois Senate paints a very different picture. While a state senator, Obama voted for a bill that would ban nearly every hunting rifle, shotgun and target rifle owned by Illinois citizens. That same bill would authorize the state police to raid homes of gun owners to forcibly confiscate banned guns. Obama supported a bill that would shut down law-abiding firearm manufacturers including Springfield Armory, Armalite, Rock River Arms and Les Baer. Obama also voted for a bill that would prohibit law-abiding citizens from purchasing more than one gun per month.

The ISRA’s website isn’t responding at the moment. Care to back up Pearson’s hair-on-fire warnings with the text of some actual bills?

And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

Wow … that sure is some crazy talk. Sounds like … a constitutional lawyer.

One of the most fucked up aspects of our political culture is how impossible it is to get single-issue conservatives to even imagine developing a broad, compromised consensus on an issue that would ultimately be to their advantage. Here we have a constitutional lawyer who represents a more or less recent consensus among liberals that the 2nd Amendment guarantees an individual right to bear arms. You would think the NRA would say "Hey, here’s a dude we can work with. We still want to vote for the other guy, but let’s play loyal opposition for once." But, nope, it’s all scary black buck wants to take yer guns. Fucking morans.

Repeating the Brady Bullshit™ doesn’t help Obama’s cause with independents, pro-gun Democrats such as John Dingell, or recent Obamacons such as myself.
For the record, almost all states permit concealed carry.
Some states are easier to get a permit in than others, but it is allowed.
Also for the record, there has been no epidemic of enraged gun permit holders shooting people over traffic stops.

Sure there’s probably been a few isolated incidents, but in the aggregate, CCW holders are more law abiding then the general public.

I’m an Obama supporter, but I do so in spite of his record on guns.

As for the NRA, well, let’s just say I take anything they say with a grain of salt since Grover Norquist sits on their board.

The FACT is the Bush administration favors reasonable restrictions on firearms. Like, say, machine guns or carrying guns in a school zone, silencers, carrying handguns on a plane, and any other federal law on the books. It’s a myth that one party is for total gun freedom and the other confiscating them. Both sides favor reasonable restrictions and occasionally disagree on the margins.

I am more worried about an administration that says it can jail citizens without charge, counsel or trial than Obama seizing all our guns. With the Bush philosophy, gun rights are meaningless.

FWIW, Gun Owers of America gives McCain an F- for both 2006 and 2004.

If this was the only difference between Obama and McCain I might be inclined to consider it-but it isn’t now, is it? The fact is an Obama administration would only be able to nibble around the edges on the gun issue without congressional support-and the congressional Dems are going to have bigger fish to fry. Not only that, the congressional Dems are publicly split on the issue anyway-some (Pelosi) would probably love a strict gun control bill and others (Webb) would fight it tooth and nail. I don’t see gun control being the overriding issue anyways-for some reason economic meltdown, a government that spies on its own people, the right to habeus corpus, hell just competent adult leadership is more important right now. If Obama starts making gun control an issue I will be the first to fight his administration over it but for the moment I want adults in charge.
