Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

When I was faster i was always behind.

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

My right to basic bodily autonomy is not on the table. that’s the new deal.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” was supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

“A king is only a king if we bow down.” – Rev. William Barber

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

Trumpflation is an intolerable hardship for every American, and it’s Trump’s fault.

So many bastards, so little time.

Let me file that under fuck it.

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

So very ready.

White supremacy is terrorism.

The unpunished coup was a training exercise.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

A norm that restrains only one side really is not a norm – it is a trap.

Just because you believe it, that does not make it true.

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

The world has changed, and neither one recognizes it.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Bad Mood

I am grouchy as hell today. I didn’t sleep well at all, I still have clogged sinuses, and it is crappy and drizzly outside. I think I may spend the morning drinking black coffee while cranking Pantera-Hostile repeatedly until the neighbors complain.

Here are some pics so you are not grumpy, too:

Claim your sleeping pets, folks.

    I dunno…that cat looks pretty grumpy, too….

Now my little darling may be the only cat in the world who doesn’t make early morning demands that I get up. She’s in there now, doing as she often does, sleeping in for hours after I get up.

Yeah, snot packed in your head isn’t good. I’ve got that stuff you spray up there. Works okay.

Today’s a little cooler out here on the Cali coast. We’ll be driving down to Silicon Valley to visit the kid in San Jose.

Rain is way out there in the Pacific. Not due in until next Thursday.

One of my cats has decided in the last couple of days that whenever I get up from a place for a moment, he has to be there before I get back. That’s why I’m up right now instead of sleeping in.

Oh well–at least I got to blog about this delightful story of Florida election irregularities as a result.

You are headed for impacted sinuses and infection. VERY painful.

Are you taking a decongestant during the day and using your pocket nasal mist? Antihistamine at night? Drinking plenty of fluids (alcohol does not count, it dehydrates)?

Have you turned your heat on? Very drying. Make sure there’s some moisture in the air. Cool-air vaporizers are good and cheap.

Having to get your sinuses drained at the doc’s office is not a pleasant experience. Take heed.

Uh, F.L.A.H.I., regarding mailing one’s ballot in in yer link, Obama volunteers here in SW Florida are calling voters (Democrat only, as far as I know) from the absentee list and offering to pick up their ballots and deliver them in-person. Some people do mean well.

What a bunch of liberal elitist pantywaists. All ya’ gotta do is load up a Q-tip with Vick’s Vapo Rub, chuck it into the ol’ Makita Cordless and drill, baby drill. You betcha’.

    Clogged sinuses. Yay.

I’ve come back to the classics because they work. ymmv, of course. Mentholatum or Vick’s Vapo-rub on the upper lip and around the nostrils. If it’s really bad, a vaporizer with some in the medicine cup (if it’s a hot-air vaporizer) supplements provided you’re staying in the same room most of the time

If you’re using a cold-air vaporizer, I recommend a slightly different action. Add a teaspoon of peppermint extract per gallon of water in that box, and let it rip. If you, like me, use a cpap for sleep apnea and it’s got a humidifier (water box), add a few drops every night to the water. I’ve not had a stuffed sinuses/nose problem at night since I started doing that (though I’ve had to use things during the day.)

Good luck. I know from experience how much stuffed sinuses suck, and hope you can escape the problem

Your sinuses will clear as will your skies. I’d happily trade your Dank Drizzle for the (light) San Diego Santa ana winds. That would dry out your snot locker and wet my environment; Two brush fires within a mile of the house gets within the last 3 weeks is a bit nervewracking. I’d rather be grumpy.

Zyrtec, Flonase and clemastine fumarate (aka Tavist).

Flonase or one of its equivalents requires a prescrition, the other two are OTC.

Salvation for the sinus sufferer. No side effects, healing, comfort, breathing. Ahhhhhhhhhhh.

Sorry to hear you are grumpy today. Did you try some Zyrtec-D? It is a lifesaver for me. It is an absolutely beautiful day here. Every summer I bitch about how damn hot it is and why the hell do I live here. Then the fall gets here, and I remember. Blue skies, high of 75, festival season in full swing and LSU/Georgia game today. There are so many options, we are having a hard time deciding what to do.

Oh, she is most all the time. That one’s mine. Goes by the name Brimstone. When I’m in a bad mood I take it upon myself to try to put her in a better one. Does very little for her, but helps me a lot. It’s like I’ve outsourced being ornery to her, so I don’t have to be.

Not that there is a shortage of sinus advice on this thread but this sinucleanse thing works wonders for us. No drugs, so you can use it and still dope up, if needed.

The Dangerman is right, nasal irrigation is wonderful, if a bit disgusting. And I say that as an anti-new-age-quackery kind of guy. Combine that with a good decongestant and you should be good to go.

Here’s something to cheer you up John.

Looks like the Obama campaign may have roped the dope on the electoral map and forced McCain into a failed strategy that rested on distractions and tried to cover too many states.

We’ll know in a few days.

I’ve had a chest cold and cough dogging me this week. Last night I took 2 tylenol cold/flu, 2 advil and a shot of nyquil and I slept for about 10 hours straight.

    Hey John,

Have you tried nasal flushing? It’s worked wonders for me. You can get the little tea-pot device (neti-pot) or what you’ll probably need is the bulb that allows you to flush the nasal passages with some pressure. If you do try it, just don’t forget to get the saline solution–straight water hurts like hell.

    Netti- pot is the bomb.

It IS disgusting, but most bodily fluids are. Just keep doing it about every 3-4 hours. The yogis do it every day as a matter body maintenance. Leaving all that snot up there will bring on an infection.

    Comrade Darkness

    October 25, 2008 at 12:33 pm

    @J.A.F. Rusty Shackleford:

Watch out for the overdose on acetaminophen there, Rusty. Both the Tylenol cold/flu and the nyquil have a dose each in it and you are doubling down. Especially if you average more than 3 drinks of alcohol a day, normally. Tylenol/acetaminophen breakdown products are toxic to the liver. If you are a regular drinker you have far more than average number of enzymes in your liver and you process the acetaminophen too fast, giving your liver a nasty burst of toxins.

325-650mg max per 4-6 hours. Gotta check all the labels and add it up. You can live without a lot of body parts, but not your liver.

This has been a public service announcement from the StuffyHeaded Owners of Grumpy Cats Council.

I’ve managed to dodge the more serious sinus issues that plague my family (and apparently a lot of commenters here), so I can ususally get sufficient sinus clearance with Chinese hot mustard. Mmmmm.

Would that make me an irregular drinker?

(saline spray does wonders for me, but i’m not a neti pot convert.)
