Nice start for pitt. Glad to see Fox finally decided to switch to the game 10 minutes in.

I’m not watching the game at this moment, but I’ve been impressed that Fox has used the Transformer-guy who hits home runs as their go-to bump graphic this football season so far.
Flawless execution, Fox. Flawless.

Fox coverage is what began my slow divorce from NFL fandom. I’ve got 119 teams in I-A that I can watch. That’s enough for me. And college on TV is always watchable (even if it’s on FSN [sucks being a Big XII’er] or Bob Davie is announcing), although I ALWAYS
feelknow that I know the rules better than the announcers.matt
Not sure where Ben was throwing that pass.
On a brighter note, McCain only up by 2 in Arizona.

The only saving grace for Fox, at least here, is that the picture quality is fairly decent in SD. (CBS looks like it’s being broadcast from 1972.)

Hey, John, I’ve been watching the Steelers for 40 years and can’t place the uniforms they’re wearing today.
Can you provide me a vintage? It seems like the helmets are 70’s, but that’s all I can pull up.
Just curious.
J.
While I completely agree with your Football on Fox assessment, I do not share your rooting interest.
GO GIANTS!!!
Btw, what is the deal with all of these teams wearing throwback uniforms that look like some "Project Runway" challenge?
Comrade Kevin
@John O:
I think those Steelers uniforms are from the early 1960’s, from the brief shot of them I saw during the broadcast of the 49ers’ "football" game.
John Cole
@John O: Allegedly the 60’s.
John O
Thanks.
Pretty gruesome, I must say. With the black version of the helmets they’d look good.
ChrisB
Three things:
1. Was that John Henry Johnson carrying the ball for the Steelers?
2. If you think that hit on Moore down the sideline was a penalty, you’re a pussy.
3. Man, do I hate listening to Dick Stockton and Troy Aikman.
evabaruk
@Comrade Kevin:
That’s good cuz for a second I thought the Giants were playing the Pittsburgh High School Yellow Jackets.
ChrisB
Are all comments from Giant fans subject to moderation?
Nervous Cowboy Fan
I think it is what you are used to. I am a Cowboys fan and am use to Fox, so CBS seems off to me when I watch our games on them.
I’m also used to college football on ABC because of the Big 12 and CBS college games also seem lousy to me.
Hook ‘Em!

The Steelers have the ugliest uniforms I’ve every seen in the NFL. What gives?
John Cole
@ChrisB: That was a bullshit call.

Fox in all its incarnations thinks we’re dumb and can be bamboozled with shiny objects. I appreciate some of the high-tech advances, like the yellow first-down line, but the robot graphics are just dumb. But hey, I’m a Raiders fan, so I don’t care if they turn it into pro wrestling.
Big E
pardon this intrusion to the football thread…..
GO PHILLS !!!!!!!!!!!

A disappointing first half.
Sootytern
Oh Joy!! The Patriots won over the Rams. Go Patriots!!!
matt
Well…at least the defense is playing well. The offense can’t be much worse so I have hope for the second half.

Watching my beloved Bengals get stomped. Again.
EVERYBODY DEY!
#1 Draft Pick, here we come! I like to call each Bengals game "The Integrity Bowl."

That was some laughable coverage. Nice job by Washington though.

McCain’s support here is wide, but thin. People really don’t know what he’s done for the state. That’s because the answer is, "Not much."
Obama has enthusiastic support here. We will be thrilled, but not blown away, if this state votes Blue this year. It happened last in 1996, it’s not out of the question.

Barack speaks to 100,000 in Denver today.

FOX broadcasts all seem to be aimed at the kind of drunken college males that Borat feasted on. Crap like THE GREATEST DAMN SPORTS SHOW PERIOD EXCLAMATION POINT EXPLOSION ETCETERA!
FOX is a metaphorical casino/strip club designed to ply money from dim adolescents.
TheHatOnMyCat
Um, what was that throw? The spin – toss – to – opponent play?
ninerdave
It’s called the influence of video games. While I’m a gamer, it sucks. FOX less whiz-bang more football.
Also is it just me or are the amount of commercials getting ridiculous? I watch on a PVR, but I find myself hitting the skip button more than actually watching the game. It seems especially bad this season.
matt
Steelers are losing DBs at an alarming rate. McFadden was already out… I’m not even sure who comes in now.

The Cardiac Kids do it again. Down to the last play but Cleveland pulls it out. Go Brown’s!

Oops. Reserve long snapper for a reason.
matt
Someone please explain to me why James Harrison is the backup long snapper?!
Good god, this is going to be the most ridiculous loss ever.
John O
*sigh*
I hate the Giants.
Depressing. Not in the least because I had a lot of confidence points on the Steelers.

Is that a G carved on Big Ben’s cheek?
UPDATE: Oops! I see now its a big ol’ L.
J.
Wow, and Brett Favre only threw THREE interceptions — and still managed to win the game. Guess FOUR is just not Ben’s lucky number.
Giants all the way!
Mike
Yes, what the fuck is the deal with those robot-looking player animations? I hate those and cannot fathom why they were invented or are still used.
Comrade Jake
That little punk Yglesias would appear to be pissing on your lawn Cole.

I like the Horns AND the Giants AND Obama. Boy o Boy things are sailing smoothly for me.
John – Slaton did his thing against the Bungles today. I was at the game and he looked great again.

Steelers’ jerseys from ’60, helmets from ’62 (sorta- the ’62 logoed helmet read "Steel" not "Steelers"). Not the most attractive uni, but a crapload better than last year’s Eagles throwbacks- those looked like the dog puked up a piece of taffy.
I’m over the Fox bells and whistles, and actually prefer theirs to those at CBS. And Stockton/Aikman beat the hell out of Gumbel/Simms. Last week, after a Mason Crosby kickoff was downed three yards deep in the endzone, Simms noted that the ball was kicked through the endzone. It’s calls like that which force me to turn down the tv volume and listen to the games on Sirius, 45 second lag and all.

Fox is not quite as bad as ESPN. At CBS they get into a lengthy interview with Goodell about how awesome it is to have the NFL playing in England while the Chargers are running eight plays in the background, pretty much ignored by the network because they are having this awesome interview that everyone would rather listen to instead of watching the fucking football game.
And is there anything more embarrasing than not only not covering the receiver, but losing track of the receiver so badly that you can’t even find him to tackle him? Butler, I think his name is?
Even the Chargers’ secondary is a little bit better than that. The first two usually miss the tackle, but the third guy gets him.
Bob In Pacifica
As much as I’ve hated the Cowboys I don’t mind Troy Aikman. Dick Stockton, however, seems to be bloodless. Can’t stand Joe Buck either.
Of course, watching the Niners week in week out, who cares who the announcers are? We always get the fourth-stringers anyway.
Notorious P.A.T.
Rich Rodriguez is 2-6 at u of m after getting whalloped at home by my Spartans. He has to win all the rest of his games to avoid u of m’s first losing season in 41 years.

Is it possible at this point for the Niners to mulligan this entire decade?

@Andy K:
If I were you, I’d be tempted to try to time-delay with my DVR to get the television and radio broadcast to sync up.

gex@49
Uhm, we ain’t all got DVRs. Who are you, one of them Rothschilds who I hear owns everything under the sun (damn, gotta quit reading that WND site)?
Hell, if I could budget it in, I wouldn’t use it anyway. My gaping is way down.

What have against the Rothschilds? You some kinda elitist or something?

I know I’m late, really, really late to this thread, but "Go Giants!"
Sorry, couldn’t resist.
AND no, I’m not a fair weather/bandwagon fan. I grew up on the East Coast, became a Giants fan way, way back in the day, before Bill Parcells took over (and they’d have 4-12 or 3-11-1 seasons). It made my decade to see them beat the overdog Patriots in the SB and maybe, just maybe, they’ll make it back.
I’m not greedy, though. Two or three SBs w/Manning as the QB will be enough for me.
As for Big Ben, man, he really needs to release the ball faster, take fewer hits, fewer sacks, and try throwing to players wearing team colors (as in his, not the other team).
That is all.
Jackie
I’m watching the WS – also on Fox – and I’m just grateful they aren’t doing the racing car lead-in to every stat. They’ve finally growing up – at least as far as MLB.
I work most Sundays, so don’t get to watch many NFL games anymore – the few I’ve seen I’ve just been happy to watch football. SNF and MNF broadcasting is passe, imo. Just give me the game without all the Hollywood BS.

When I watch baseball I listen to the commentary on the radio instead — it changes the experience from one of constant irritation to one of thorough enjoyment.

Hear hear. Can’t stand dem Bums, but growing up in LA it’s a treat to listen to Vin Scully call a game on the radio. Just goes great on a warm summer night.

I haven’t really watched much football for the last 7 years or so. Is she still smokin’ hot?

If by elitist you mean "snarkily channeling a (Ron)Paulist", then yes, I’m quite the elitist. And if you tease me any more I’ll take my gold standard back to my fortified compound and seethe for four more years.

Steelers, Giants, go go go! Good for those of you who live in areas with tolerable pro teams — I’m stuck with the Vikings. (Though scarily enough on the college side, the Gophers are surprisingly strong this year — we might actually get a real bowl game in a few weeks.)
This is for you, John — yet another Republican voting for Obama because he was sickened by his own party.
This particular one was lied to by the McCain campaign about McCain’s stance on health care.
Wini
Proud Gopher season ticket holder here. The last couple of years have been somewhat (okay, very) rough, but this one is fun.

I am old enough to find it amusing that a phootball phan will even admit to knowing about Project Runway. When I was growing up in the 60s, my dad told me that most sports uniforms were ugly because knowing the names of more colors than the smallest box of crayons might be considered sissy. My late father had a considerable cynicism about the hyper-macho credentials of old rich guys who bought sports teams as an excuse to hang around big sweaty young men in tight uniforms.
Conservatively Liberal
Actually, this year it is wall to wall commercials with some bits of the game interspersed throughout, but just enough to keep you interested. That and it allows for more bathroom runs for the heavy beer drinkers.
I was a Steelers fan back in the good old days (70’s) but I hitched my wagon to the Seahawks (lived in Washington state at the time). Rooting for the Seahawks and seeing them choke repeatedly quickly ruined the game for me. I quit watching or caring in the late 80’s and haven’t looked back.
I got married around that time too… Hmmmm…. ;)
Heck, my wife pays more attention to the games than I do…lol!

I was a Pirates fan back in the ’70s, Willy Stargell!
But never really liked american football. Too hetro, i suppose. If i wanted to get my gaye tights-wearing wrestling fix I’d watch Bruno San Martino vs the Iron Sheik on Sunday morn after the Ernest Angley hour and before Soul Train.
Gosh i miss those simpler days of black and white tv.
Thomas Edward Theadore
Sigh, why must we always expound on our hetro-ness? Is there really anything wrong with enjoying a sport where muscular young men in skimpy tight pants touch each other? Doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy a Jessica Alba movie.
Anyone else really enjoying that "Starter Wife" show? Fabulous.
Thomas Edward Theadore
Enjoy your football game, knowing that 1% of the population owns your bitchasses. Enjoy, knowing that they raped you for your tax dollars on that stadium. Enjoy knowing that they are laughing at you while they roll in your dollars. Enjoy knowing you can’t afford to actually see the show live in the stadium, cuz you is poor.
Oh wait, is American Idol on? Nevermind.

The Falcons were robbed.
(of course, they shouldn’t have made the mistakes they made earlier to put them in that position, but to have that bad of a blown call with 2:30 left in the game… just wow.
If nothing else, I suppose you can call this a motivational game. Because I’d be damn motivated after that.
