Steelers v. Giants

I hate watching the NFL on fox- their coverage just irritates me. I feel like I am watching the Transformers more than I am watching football, what with all their over the top graphics and sound effects and everything.

Regardless, Go Steelers!

Nice start for pitt. Glad to see Fox finally decided to switch to the game 10 minutes in.

I’m not watching the game at this moment, but I’ve been impressed that Fox has used the Transformer-guy who hits home runs as their go-to bump graphic this football season so far.

    Flawless execution, Fox. Flawless.

Fox coverage is what began my slow divorce from NFL fandom. I’ve got 119 teams in I-A that I can watch. That’s enough for me. And college on TV is always watchable (even if it’s on FSN [sucks being a Big XII’er] or Bob Davie is announcing), although I ALWAYS feel know that I know the rules better than the announcers.

Not sure where Ben was throwing that pass.

On a brighter note, McCain only up by 2 in Arizona.

The only saving grace for Fox, at least here, is that the picture quality is fairly decent in SD. (CBS looks like it’s being broadcast from 1972.)

Hey, John, I’ve been watching the Steelers for 40 years and can’t place the uniforms they’re wearing today.

Can you provide me a vintage? It seems like the helmets are 70’s, but that’s all I can pull up.

    Just curious.

While I completely agree with your Football on Fox assessment, I do not share your rooting interest.

    GO GIANTS!!!

Btw, what is the deal with all of these teams wearing throwback uniforms that look like some "Project Runway" challenge?

    @John O:

I think those Steelers uniforms are from the early 1960’s, from the brief shot of them I saw during the broadcast of the 49ers’ "football" game.

    Three things:

    1. Was that John Henry Johnson carrying the ball for the Steelers?

    2. If you think that hit on Moore down the sideline was a penalty, you’re a pussy.

    3. Man, do I hate listening to Dick Stockton and Troy Aikman.

McCain’s support here is wide, but thin. People really don’t know what he’s done for the state. That’s because the answer is, "Not much."

Obama has enthusiastic support here. We will be thrilled, but not blown away, if this state votes Blue this year. It happened last in 1996, it’s not out of the question.

It’s called the influence of video games. While I’m a gamer, it sucks. FOX less whiz-bang more football.

Also is it just me or are the amount of commercials getting ridiculous? I watch on a PVR, but I find myself hitting the skip button more than actually watching the game. It seems especially bad this season.

Steelers’ jerseys from ’60, helmets from ’62 (sorta- the ’62 logoed helmet read "Steel" not "Steelers"). Not the most attractive uni, but a crapload better than last year’s Eagles throwbacks- those looked like the dog puked up a piece of taffy.

I’m over the Fox bells and whistles, and actually prefer theirs to those at CBS. And Stockton/Aikman beat the hell out of Gumbel/Simms. Last week, after a Mason Crosby kickoff was downed three yards deep in the endzone, Simms noted that the ball was kicked through the endzone. It’s calls like that which force me to turn down the tv volume and listen to the games on Sirius, 45 second lag and all.

    October 26, 2008 at 7:48 pm

Fox is not quite as bad as ESPN. At CBS they get into a lengthy interview with Goodell about how awesome it is to have the NFL playing in England while the Chargers are running eight plays in the background, pretty much ignored by the network because they are having this awesome interview that everyone would rather listen to instead of watching the fucking football game.

And is there anything more embarrasing than not only not covering the receiver, but losing track of the receiver so badly that you can’t even find him to tackle him? Butler, I think his name is?

Even the Chargers’ secondary is a little bit better than that. The first two usually miss the tackle, but the third guy gets him.

I know I’m late, really, really late to this thread, but "Go Giants!"

    Sorry, couldn’t resist.

AND no, I’m not a fair weather/bandwagon fan. I grew up on the East Coast, became a Giants fan way, way back in the day, before Bill Parcells took over (and they’d have 4-12 or 3-11-1 seasons). It made my decade to see them beat the overdog Patriots in the SB and maybe, just maybe, they’ll make it back.

I’m not greedy, though. Two or three SBs w/Manning as the QB will be enough for me.

As for Big Ben, man, he really needs to release the ball faster, take fewer hits, fewer sacks, and try throwing to players wearing team colors (as in his, not the other team).

    That is all.

I’m watching the WS – also on Fox – and I’m just grateful they aren’t doing the racing car lead-in to every stat. They’ve finally growing up – at least as far as MLB.

I work most Sundays, so don’t get to watch many NFL games anymore – the few I’ve seen I’ve just been happy to watch football. SNF and MNF broadcasting is passe, imo. Just give me the game without all the Hollywood BS.

Steelers, Giants, go go go! Good for those of you who live in areas with tolerable pro teams — I’m stuck with the Vikings. (Though scarily enough on the college side, the Gophers are surprisingly strong this year — we might actually get a real bowl game in a few weeks.)

Btw, what is the deal with all of these teams wearing throwback uniforms that look like some "Project Runway" challenge?

I am old enough to find it amusing that a phootball phan will even admit to knowing about Project Runway. When I was growing up in the 60s, my dad told me that most sports uniforms were ugly because knowing the names of more colors than the smallest box of crayons might be considered sissy. My late father had a considerable cynicism about the hyper-macho credentials of old rich guys who bought sports teams as an excuse to hang around big sweaty young men in tight uniforms.

Actually, this year it is wall to wall commercials with some bits of the game interspersed throughout, but just enough to keep you interested. That and it allows for more bathroom runs for the heavy beer drinkers.

I was a Steelers fan back in the good old days (70’s) but I hitched my wagon to the Seahawks (lived in Washington state at the time). Rooting for the Seahawks and seeing them choke repeatedly quickly ruined the game for me. I quit watching or caring in the late 80’s and haven’t looked back.
