Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

You cannot shame the shameless.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

White supremacy is terrorism.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

We still have time to mess this up!

Come on, man.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

This fight is for everything.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

No one could have predicted…

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

Election Live Blog

This post is in: Election 2008

FacebookTweetEmail

8 pm (Tim) – Pennsylvania and New Hampshire called instantly for Obama. McCain staffers nervously looking out for forks.

7:58 pm (Tim) – Going to start liveblogging at the top of the thread. Memo to Ace from Pennsylvania – Tim Mahoney belongs to Florida. When he loses I will raise my glass with yours.

Since all of us can post to the same thread (I mean me, Michael, and Tim), here is one big thread so we do not have a new open thread every three minutes because all of us are alternating between being wasted and in a nervous panic.

So here goes.

7:17 pm (John)- Whoever thought of “beaming in” Jessica Yellin on CNN should be beaten with a stick. Twice.

7:22 pm (Tim) – I’m not alternating. +2.

7:24 pm (John)- I have always maintained that anything could happen, but I don’t think I ever internalized it because I felt Obama had run a solid campaign and done everything he could. Then, just a moment ago, I had a crushing sense of impending doom that Obama is going to lose. I pulled hard on my beer. It could happen, and I do not want to deal with it. +5.5

7:30 pm (Tim) – John Kerry lost Kentucky by 20. The last time CNN flashed its numbers Obama was down by 5%. Obviously he will lose the state by more than that, but it will be telling if Obama outperforms Kerry in a state like KY.

7:35 pm (Tim) – Jonah Goldberg on on the holotarded Yellin effect:

[W]as it really a hologram? I mean did Wolf see her as a 3D light projection or was it merely an illusion for the sake of the viewers? Wolf said it looked like she was really in the studio, but somehow I doubt they have holo projectors over at CNN.

Jesus f*cking christ. Bill Buckley must be so proud.

7:40 pm (John)- This is taking entirely too damned long. I have not had time crawl this slowly since I was in second grade and sent to Ms. Springborn’s office for causing trouble and had to wait on the bench outside contemplating whether or not the vaunted “electric paddle” existed and whether or not she would use it on me. +6.25

7:48 pm (Tim) – blogs on the beeb! I have a mild worry that they might bring us up to make blogging look bad.

7:57 pm: Obama is leading 55-45 in South Carolina. CNN projects a McCain win. I have no doubt about that, but, eh? (MD)

8:04: I decided to quite the drinking game. Obama: 77. McCain: 34. (MD)

8:15: I still say 350+ for Obama. (MD)

8:19: Haven’t seen the numbers myself, but a commenter says Dole is out in NC. Good riddance. And David Axelrod looks kinda like Hitler. (MD)

8:22: FWIW, I am watching CNN exclusively, holograms ‘n all. (MD)

8:29: EV = 81-34 Obama (MD)

8:30: New Hampshire belongs to B-Rock! (MD)

8:32: I am not watching FOX, but TZ says they are calling PA for Obama. Awesome. (MD) CNN is too. Barack Obama takes a state that McPalin counted on!!!

I have CNN on with no sound.

Yellin must be saying "Help me, Obi Wan Wolfie, you’re my only hope!"

That is the most amateurish, stupid, silly thing I think I have ever seen on a national newscast since they switched to color from black and white in the 60’s.

    @Atanarjuat:

I hope to God that my fears are unfounded and all these projected calls will soon be reversed once every single vote is counted (as it should be).

And it’s official! My money is that it’s DougJ.

    I’m feeling increasingly ill.

    This can’t be happening.

Well, at least you had the balls to show up here and sort of own up to the loss. I’ll give you props for that.

Atan, I realize I don’t represent the values that you want for your country, but the people spoke tonight. We’re ill from dealing with eight years of corruption. We can work together and try to make things better for all, or you can remain ill and we can remain enemies. Your choice. Yes. We. Can.
