Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

Not all heroes wear capes.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

We still have time to mess this up!

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Everybody saw this coming.

“Squeaker” McCarthy

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

Election Night Drinking Game

Ok, here it is: Every time Obama wins an electoral vote, you have to take a shot.

This is your pre-Obama wave open thread. I an calling it 350 EVs for Obama. And I am including Georgia. In 2004, 835,000 African-Americans voted in the entire election. This year, 705,000 voted in early voting alone. I’m taking that as a good sign. In addition, I am hearing on local radio that the Atlanta suburbs are experiencing 15-20 minute waits at the polls. Not a good sign for McCain.

Beware! The Mac is Back. And I think Chris Matthews is about to have that thrill run up his leg very soon.

And limiting us to only one shot per EV is Unamerican, but you are a Canadian, right? (j/k!)

I have some pictures I’ll upload in a minute. Link coming soon.

Since the electoral college won’t vote for some time yet, I think people will make it through the night based on this game.

This game is sure to result in severe alcohol poisoning, though this might not be a bad thing if wingnuts take the bait.

I would hate to see decent people die sooner than they should though.

Of course, if you made it a shot for every electoral vote for McCain, nobody would get high and that’s no fun.

BTW, anyone who wants to join me, the following states don’t drink:
ME, VT, MA, RI, CT, NY, NJ, PA, MD, DE, DC
    MI, WI, MN, IL
    CA, OR, WA, HI

    Everything else drinks. Likely are:
NH, VA, NC, FL, OH, IA, NV, CO, NM, MO

    Landslide could bring in:
    GA, IN, MT, ND, AZ

I’d say you’re safely in for 6-7 and possibly in for half a case.

I think you’re mistaken; it is self-updating. I’ve had it running in a background tab while I work (really!) and every time I flip over to it, the numbers have changed. The refresh interval is probably just longer than our ordinary level of patience notices.

It is sort of self-updating. I’ve seen the data change but I think there’s some kind of trigger – you need to roll over a state or something. I haven’t quite figured it out.

And, if the Scoreboard wasn’t cool enough, they are doing a diary on each state with an embedded live widget just for that race. That’s pretty impressive too.

Laura, I cruised through western NC a couple of weeks ago on a whirlwind BRP tour (had to detour north of Asheville due to road problems), but I was pleasantly suprised by the number of BO signs in rural areas. Didn’t see nearly the number of Dole signs…that suprised me. Guess she really did piss off the ‘base’ with her lack of attendance in her home state. This was before the ‘God’ ad….
