Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“In the future, this lab will be a museum. do not touch it.”

So many bastards, so little time.

Dumb motherfuckers cannot understand a consequence that most 4 year olds have fully sorted out.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

When tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes duty. ~Thomas Jefferson

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

Tide comes in. Tide goes out. You can’t explain that.

If America since Jan 2025 hasn’t broken your heart, you haven’t loved her enough.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

Jack Smith: “Why did you start campaigning in the middle of my investigation?!”

Fundamental belief of white supremacy: white people are presumed innocent, minorities are presumed guilty.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

We are learning that “working class” means “white” for way too many people.

America is going up in flames. The NYTimes fawns over MAGA celebrities. No longer a real newspaper.

You passed on an opportunity to be offended? What are you even doing here?

It’s pointless to bring up problems that can only be solved with a time machine.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

You aren’t there yet, and it is clearly going to take some more time before you face facts, but there is a real simple reason why mean old McLame did not dispel all those rumors about Palin.

He knows they are true.

I’ve caught bits of the Sarah Palin Interview Tour on Youtube. Not exactly deep questions, they might as well have asked Palin what her favorite color is. They should ask her if she can name three people she met when she did her whirlwind UN tour. Or maybe three countries in Africa.

McCain’s people are so stupid they managed to generate sympathy for her. My loathing for Palin knows no bounds, but she was right to call them cowards. As is McCain in this regard.

Nah, I’m going with "knows that choosing Palin sunk his chances, that she wouldn’t play along nicely, keeps a grudge, mumbles explanations."

The whole story about Africa I don’t buy. The NAFTA story, maybe.

@Funkhauser: Actually I’d be more apt to believe the reverse. Her words:

"So, no, I think that if there are allegations based on questions or comments that I made in debate prep about NAFTA, and about the continent versus the country when we talk about Africa there, then those were taken out of context,” Ms. Palin said.

@Jeff: I thought that too. I’d pay to watch a video of her debate prep sessions.

I have wondered why, if the Palin dustup is so much bullshit, McCain hasn’t come out to defend her. He seems a pretty loyal sort, to people who are on his side. I guess the seeds to my answer are in that observation.

I have wondered if they taped any of the debate preps. I would assume that would be standard practice for coaching on body language, etc.

Of course I may have answered my own question. McCain had the worst body language I’ve ever seen during the debates. He looked like he was perpetually pissed that he had to deal with this Obama twerp. Whereas Obama looked engaged, like he was interested in what his opponent had to say and couldn’t wait to respond. He even literally was at the dge of his seat at times.

I pray that Obama will be an excellent president and leader, but the campaign told me all I needed to know about what sort of president McCain would have been.

Or maybe three countries in Africa.

This question may have made her head explode.

Reporter: Can you name three countries in Africa?

Palin: That’s a great question, I’ve always had a deep admiration for Africa and all her countries…

Inner Palin: Do countries have countries inside of them? Do he say counties? I remember those from Alaska. But I don’t think a country can have a country inside of it… unless he means like I’m going out to the country to my vacation home?

Reporter (30 seconds later): Can you name three of them… maybe one at the very SOUTH end of AFRICA?

Palin: You know, there are just so many…. all of them!

Why on earth would anyone think that the author of Character is Destiny would step in to stop the vilification of a woman who spent over $150,000 of other people’s money in just two months on designer boots and silk boxers, all the while ranting about the danger to America that would be posed by "redistributing wealth" away from people who earn it, a.k.a. a $500 tax credit.

Hey – if some guy like the chairman of Circuit City who made $8,000,000 per year to spin his company into bankruptcy has to pay a whole $150,000 of that in taxes just so the wealth can be "spread around" to three hundred working families, that’s marxism and must be resisted. If Sarah takes $500 each from 300 working families to buy shoes, that’s a Manolo Blahnik of a different color.

i know a person who needs to remain anon who worked (from the media side) with palin in 2006 when she was just elected governor. the last piece of the interview was to be conducted out in the woods and my friend offered to spend some money on some clothes for gov. palin. she accepted the offer and had her aide go out (in anchorage) and buy up a ton of fancy clothes, none appropriate for the interview outdoors as mooted.

the point of all this? this woman is who she is—a dopey vindictive woman who loves to spend to other people’s money on her petty needs and those of her family. it wasn’t a product of her circumstance running for vp, it was a product of sarah being sarah.

I think that he’s gone through most of the initial $250 billion chunk. One of the positive changes Congress made when passing the bailout package was to pass the money out in two installments. Paulson has to go back and ask nicely for the second half of the money, and Congress can stall until the new administration comes in if they’re unhappy with the job Paulson’s been doing.

I was told by Cult Leaders during a particularly drama-filled weekend at the local Obama shop that there are "process people" and "policy people" and that I was a process person, and that’s why I had difficulty working with a particular Obama staffer who was, at heart, I guess, a policy person, and…vice-a-versa.

I never found out why they stuck us with a policy person to organize the grunt work, but that’s all past history now…we got around him and then he got reassigned, and then we won, so all is forgiven.

Maybe BTD is a policy person who mistakenly ventured into process. That can happen, I guess.

    Wow, Obama has Palin’s bleassing:

WASHINGTON – Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has given President-elect Barack Obama a conditional vote of confidence on handling the war in Iraq.

You’ll have to pardon me while I vomit. This lying sack of crap who trashed Obama’s reputation to the point of all but accusing him of treason now says this. Of course I’m sure the mighty interviewer never brought up the obvious contradiction between what she said for the last ten weeks and her current statements. And it wasn’t the normal rough and tumble of politics. That’s a load of bullshit, she went where no national candidate has gone in my lifetime.

I know a president can’t hold grudges, and Obama doesn’t seem like the type anyway. What does comfort me is that Rahm Emmanuel apparently is very comfortable holding grudges, and that’s probably part of his job as Chief of Staff. So here’s hoping that Emmanuel can figure out ways to damage her politically, or in any other way.

John, you told us that Sarah Palin was thoroughly vetted. Was this true, or were you just sort of covering up? If it was true, how did you manage to do such a terrible job? And if it was false, why did you keep saying it?

John, some of your advisors now seem to be saying that Sarah Palin wasn’t actually qualified to be Vice President. How long have your people thought this? Because it’s like having a family member scheduled for surgery and finding out that the assistant surgeon is seriously unqualified–and waiting until after the operation to say anything. It should be interesting to watch the Supreme Court stuff unfold when it happens. I’m betting it might be tough to get the two senators from Maine, Chuck Hagel, and Arlen Specter to go along with him. These four seem like intelligent senators who have to be pretty disturbed to see what their own party has become. I would not be suprised to see the GOP start to implode on itself even at the senate level. Especially Specter – he must loathe a guy like Kyl

Nope. He doesn’t have to ask at all; he just tells Bush he needs it, and Bush authorizes it. Then Bush drops a note to Congress telling them he did it.

The only way to actually stop it would be to get a resolution saying no through congress with a veto proof majority. Good luck!

Someone in the McCain campaign needs to substantiate the allegations. Palin is doing exactly what she needs to do to rehab her image; she must know either (1) the crap said about her isn’t true or (2) it is true but McCain’s "top advisers" aren’t afraid to stand behind their accusations.

I’ll give this to her. She’s usually incoherent but she is a skilled politician. How someone so utterly ignorant of national and world affairs can have nearly half the country thinking favorably about her just boggles the mind.

And that Sullivan piece that boonagain links to in #16 does indeed raise some very important and deadly serious questions. I have as much fun snarking on Sarah Palin as anyone, but the fact remains that her presence on a national presidential ticket in and of itself represents, in many respects, one of the most disturbing threats this country has ever faced. My belief is that McCain’s team signed off on every bit of that sketch, INCLUDING the dig at Palin’s clothes expenditures.
