Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I swear, each month of 2025 will have its own history degree.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

If you don’t believe freedom is for everybody, then the thing you love isn’t freedom, it is privilege.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

How stupid are these people?

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

The lights are all blinking red.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

I really should read my own blog.

I did not have this on my fuck 2025 bingo card.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Accountability, motherfuckers.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

The “burn-it-down” people are good with that until they become part of the kindling.

Every decision we make has lots of baggage with it, known or unknown.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

I notice that the Editors have been very quiet since the Steelers put the epic smackdown on the Patriots. Pity, because I would like to taunt them, and I think I will, with this:

First time I have really enjoyed that clip. That is all.

As a forlorn charger fan, I have to jump on somebodies bandwagon and I have chosen the Stillers (did I say that right?). Tough D, decent offense, they will make some noise in the playoffs.

In all honesty, I was bummed out more by the Colts AFC Championship game in 06 than the Giants loss. With Tyree’s magic catch, the gods were not with us. I can accept that.

I cannot accept letting that choking bitch Peyton Manning come back.

OT but of interest: Chambliss is on track to win comfortably. Right now it’s 66% to 34%. I doubt it will change enough to matter. Too bad but that’s Georgia. Write them off. It will always go this way, but I hope I’m wrong (but doubt I am).

Okay, a question for all the cat experts out there.

Am house-sitting for a relative with two VERY well-taken-care-of-cats. Instructions are to cut up 1/2 chicken breast into teeny tiny pieces (I’m not kidding, with scissors) twice a day and mix in some green stuff and some brewers yeast. Mix in some wet food if they’re fussy.

They ate it the first time because I arrived late and they were probably starving. They’ve pretty much ignored it ever since. Have tried straight chicken breast with no extras…nope. Straight wet food … a nibble, then nope.

They are perfectly friendly and not fussing in any other way, but as this is the third day of the food strike, I’m a little concerned. I don’t get it. My kitties at home are sooo unfussy that way.

PS, their owner is out of cell phone range so I can’t ask her what to do.

    December 2, 2008 at 10:13 pm

@Zuzu’s Petals: They’re probably just freaked out with all the changes.
I’d just leave the chicken and wet food out for them to free feed…replace it twice a day so it doesn’t spoil…and let them be. Love on them and try to help them relax and cope with your intrusive presence and their peoples’ terrifying betrayal and abandonment.
When they get really hungry they’ll eat, but as long as it’s available to them, and is what they are accustomed to, they should be OK.
If you get really freaked out, pour some tuna water over the top of it. That should compel them to at least take a look-see.

    @Zuzu’s Petals:
Give them their normal food. If they don’t eat it, it’s their fault. They will eventually (as you saw the first time you fed them). Cats, and other animals, are incredibly bound to routine. Get them into your routine, as close as it might be to what they are used to. They, and you , will be OK. Remember, you’re the boss.

    Fraud Guy

    December 2, 2008 at 10:19 pm

    Zuzu–

    They’re cats, unfortunately.

Which means that the food is either too cold, too warm, too big, too small, too old, too fresh, too mixed, not mixed enough, or that they don’t want to eat because you’re either new, not their owner, not with their owner, not new enough, or they decided not to eat yet.

We had a cat go on about a 5 day hunger strike when we switched from moist to dry to cut costs a while back–eventually hunger won, but the noise and claw marks on random furniture indicated severe displeasure on her part.

That is one of the reasons why that cat is affectionately named "Miss B!tch"

Thanks Laura W, smiley, and Fraud Guy. I have just left the food out and then replaced at the next feeding time. That’s my sense, too, that they’ll eat when they’re darn good and ready.

Otherwise, they seem perfectly pleased that I’m there. So we’ll see…

Just to show how not-up-to-speed I am on these things, the owner’s note said I "may have to put faces in food" to convince them it’s edible even if green. I actually wondered if she meant that I should sketch a little face in the food. Though putting the cats’ faces near the bowls didn’t seem to help either.

    December 2, 2008 at 10:35 pm

Ooh, I’ve tried the "faces in food" routine before, or, at least, the dab of Tonic-Lax (aka PetroMalt) on the nose.

Displeasure. MAJOR displeasure. Not at all recommended.

Yes, just leave out the food. They should be fine with just water for a couple of days if they are picky but not complaining. Tuna water over the food really is the nuclear option. It’s bad enough to get your own cats hooked on Big Pink: to do it to someone else’s cats would be incredibly cruel.

That made me laugh out loud. I have no idea what she meant there. If she meant it to make the food look more like a prey animal, then that’s the only way it makes sense. Put faces in the food? Whose faces? Are you sure it’s not feces? As gross as it is, they’ve been known to be into the stuff.

Jim Martin is not a conservative Dem. He has embraced Obama and the progressive Democratic program wholeheartedly. I know because I have worked his campaign. He does not have the name recognition state wide and he is not charismatic. What he is, though, is a real Democrat and a principled fellow. Go google him and Chambliss at one and the same time and read about them as fellow Greeks at UGA in the late 60’s. Karma and justice would have meant that Chambliss should have lost. Chambliss, among other things, is truly tone deaf when it comes to making insensitive remarks i.e. racist ones.

The Republicans bombarded us with robocalls, mailers every day, and brought in all their big guns. I hate it that they won, but I am not going to disparage a candidate who has been through 4 elections since July: the primary, a runoff, the general election and a runoff. The Democratic party in this state has been in tatters since 2002. No real leadership and no viable leaders. Many of the leading lights of the Republican party were once Democrats, i.e. Gov. Perdue, who was at UGA with Isakson, Chambliss, and Martin. We are beginning to rebuild the party from the ground up, thanks to Howard Dean. As another commenter said, give us a chance;it will happen. Our Nov 4 results were a heck of a lot closer than those in 3 neighboring states, testament to the change that is beginning to occur.

P.S. Tammy Duckworth came though here yesterday campaigning for Jim. She was and is an outstanding speaker and person. I was very impressed with her.

And melding Maddow, Brady and the Giants: Rachel is a Pats fan. In the week leading up to the SB, she badgered her producer and engineer incessantly about how the Giants had no chance. Payback is a bitch; K-Lo and Vanessa got even on Monday. It was a very funny show (and all in good fun).

I am gonna sit here until Rachel’s fuxxin video plays for me. So far Ed Rendell has stopped and started 98 times.

What concerns me about this faces comment is why should you have to prove to them that it’s edible if green? That implies that the green hue is new to them, and off-putting. If this is their normal food, they should be used to the green. Embrace the green! Eat the green without balking. Has she just recently tried to green her cats and left it to you to convince them green is good? I do not like the sound of all that, personally, but it is past my bed time and I am really frustrated that I can’t get BJ’s 3 seconds of fame on Rachel’s show to play.

Comrade Mary: Yes, my attempts to stick their faces in the bowls also met with MAJOR displeasure. As in stiff legs feet splayed out displeasure. Food on the nose got me nowhere.
