Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

Washington Post Catch and Kill, not noticeably better than the Enquirer’s.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

He really is that stupid.

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

One of our two political parties is a cult whose leader admires Vladimir Putin.

Decision time: keep arguing about the last election, or try to win the next one?

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Cancel the cowardly Times and Post and set up an equivalent monthly donation to ProPublica.

If rights aren’t universal, they are privilege, not rights.

Bark louder, little dog.

Beware of advice from anyone for whom Democrats are “they” and not “we.”

“They all knew.”

Do we throw up our hands or do we roll up our sleeves? (hint, door #2)

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

Michigan is a great lesson for Dems everywhere: when you have power…use it!

People are weird.

Let there be snark.

Republicans in disarray!

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

’Where will you hide, Roberts, the laws all being flat?’

Sometimes I Want to Scream

I hate starting these Windows v. Apple fights since I own both, but somehow I have done something improper and now all I can get out of my speakers is background sound and not the voices of the singers. It is like it is treating my front speakers like rear speakers, and for the life of me I do not know how to fix it and IT IS MADDENING.

*** Update ***

This is the Windows machine. Somehow I had set it to 5.1, but it is fixed. Now I can hear James Brown say it loud that he is black and proud. All is well.

And sweet jeebus, the grammar in this post was atrocious. I think I was having an out of body rage experience when I wrote the earlier post.

Which it is it, the Windows machine or the Mac?

Get Linux. Then the drivers won’t work and you won’t have any sound.

Apparently, installing Ubunto will get you kicked out of your graduate program. At least according to a story I read on Digg.

Have you maybe set your speakers up to be 5.1 Dolby instead of stereo?

I will tell you what my IT guy usually tells me – try turning it off and turning it on again.

I’ll see your scream and raise you an ‘anguished.’

My pipes froze. My house flooded.

The area plumbers won’t come on an ’emergency’ call unless you’re a customer. I said, "If you come, I’ll -be- a customer."

But no. Their policy is to only come to people who, what? Have a plumber on retainer? LIke a guy in a sitcom, the wise-cracking plumbers who’s always around?

I had a similar issue a while back. After messing with the drivers and replacing the actual sound card (where I was SURE the problem lied) and still experiencing the problem like you describe, I tried it out with some headphones (plugged directly in to the computer.) Sounded fine.

It turned out to be my speakers so I replaced them. My cat had chewed on the audio cord between the PC and the speakers.

Somehow you’ve turned on some kind of 5.1 channel thing. That’s impressive, I didn’t even know you could do that.

My favorite was the guy who changed his foreground color to black, and his background color to black and then complained about how he couldn’t see anything.

@Joel: Sorry! Is Joe still in Israel? If you can’t turn off the water at the street, call the city that you live in.

Start menu->control panel->sounds and audio devices

Bottom of the volume tab has a section about speakers. Advanced settings button will let you change them from 5.1 to desktop speakers.

    Blame Tunch!

    Joel, yikes!

We had some non-licensed plumbing work done by some very nice Jamaicans. Hasn’t leaked yet. Try calling a general contractor and explaining your situation. He or she may "have a guy" to send your way.

Are you in Montreal, btw? My in laws found out the hard way that contractors had divided the city into non-compete zones so you could only ever hire the guy for your area and if you thought him an idiot or pizzed him off, you were just stuck.

In Maine. Fortunately, it’s warmed to -6, so everything’s looking good!

And I hadn’t even thought of JTP! I don’t know what I’m thinking.

    Finally found someone, though. Yay!

If you want 5.1 channels of sound, there will be complexities involved due to upgrading from 2 channel sound. One might make the argument that it is at least 2.5 times as complex.

Wow. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you unleash the nerd rage before. Well played.

(I’m trying to track down a particularly nasty and hard to trigger kernel bug at the moment; I’m on my ninth test kernel, and while I think this one is good, it also has a habit of crashing my X session, causing all of my apps to quit. If only there were something like screen, but for X rather than for character terminals, that’d be nice.
