Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

The revolution will be supervised.

People are complicated. Love is not.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Battle won, war still ongoing.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Republicans in disarray!

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

We still have time to mess this up!

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

So, can I hijack the thread with something I found at Sullivan’s place today? It’s this… (EDIT: Not safe for work! Sorry!)

I’m not even going to TRY to be political correct or sensitive in describing it. After all, the creators certainly didn’t. I’ve watched it about 20 times now, seriously. The first few, I laughed at the characiture-ness of the people in the video. The next few times I watched, I felt like I was supposed to be offended.

The last several times though, I’ve been really impressed with it. It’s getting a lot of attention.

Of course, the video addresses black men, and has been called racist. I guess, other than the gratuitous use of the word “nigger” in the video, I don’t get that charge. I think the video was made by people who really see a lot of destructive narcissism in their own community.

I could EASILY make a video that addresses the same problems in some parts of the white community. Of course, it would be less entertaining because, well, it’s me.

For me though, the whole video addresses African Americans I am not familiar with. I work mostly with African American men and women who brush their teeth, take care of their families, wear deodorant, and are very well read.

But I know where the producers of this video are coming from. I may work with the people I work with, but when I watch TV, I see an entirely different version of black America than I see at work.

Anyway watch the video, get uncomfortable, and think about it.

Read a book, Brush your teeth, wear deodorant, raaise your kids, and all the other stuff in the video is:

Well this made me laugh in a sad sort of way. Grover Norquist blamed the recession on the fact that back in 2006, everyone knew that the tax cuts would be allowed to expire in 2010, so they stopped hiring.

Yeah it had nothing to do with the bank problems or the housing bubble collapsing after a web of securities was built on top of it. It was solely speculation that 4 years down the road a bill might pass. It’s like what Robert Anton Wilson said, what the thinker thinks, the prover proves.

…and somehow a 200+ point market gain on a bad jobs reports is a sign that the markets hate the stimulus plan?

Totally off-topic, but it looks like the dreaded disease known as Wingnut-itis is spreading to Europe:

Italy’s government has issued an emergency decree to prevent a woman who has been in a coma for 17 years from having her feeding tubes disconnected.

Last year the father of Eluana Englaro won a court battle allowing the hospital to let her die. The centre-right government opposed the move.

The new decree says food and water cannot be denied to a patient.

It was approved despite objections from Italy’s president. The case has provoked fierce debate in the country.

I’d rather forget him entirely, but as the famous political philospher Juju Santeria once said, Those who fail to ridicule the past are doomed to regurgitate it, or something.

    The tune should be obvious.

    Dear Chimpy ‘tis at you,
    I hereby throw my shoe,
    It’s thee I dis.
    You’re the election thief,
    The idiot in chief
You’ve screwed us up beyond belief
    On thee I pis.[1]

You claimed to speak for God
While on the laws you trod,
    You hypocrite.
You lie just like the sod
    Your syntax it is odd
Your cowboy accent is a fraud
    You’re an upper class twit.

    At oversight you sneezed,
    Your greedy friends to please,
    And the economy crashed.
    Iraqis you did croak,
    You’ve left our grandkids broke,
You treated war like one big joke
    At the journalists’ bash.

    You tortured prisoners
    Appointed Hizzoners [2]
    Far right extreme.
    For the polluted air,
    Taxes that are unfair,
    And inept cronies everywhere,
    God save the Queen.[3]

    Your place in history
    Will be no mystery:
    You are the worst.
    Upon your neck we’d hope
To find your head but nope,
    You’d nee -eed a-a proctoscope[4]
    Of fools you’re first.

[1] Unless of course you happen to be on fire.
[2] Okay, it’s a bit of a stretch, but rather clever in a groan-inducing way, don’t you think?

Re: Michael D’s video; Thomas Jefferson noted that Africans tended to be guided more by sensation than by reflection. Reverend Wright seems to agree more with Thomas Jefferson than he does with the genius HBD deniers in the Ivy League:

Dr. Hale showed us that in comparing African-American children and European-American children in the field of education, we were comparing apples and rocks…

Dr. Hale’s research led her to stop comparing African-American children with European-American children and she started comparing the pedagogical methodologies of African-American children to African children and European-American children to European children. And bingo, she discovered that the two different worlds have two different ways of learning…

African and African-American children have a different way of learning.
When the American educational system can bring itself to understand that we do not all have identical plastic minds that absorb the cultures that surround us, then educational resources can be more efficiently allocated, to the benefit of all Americans.

Peter Orszag, the nominee to become Office of Management and Budget chief under Obama, just elaborated a bit on the incoming administration’s plans to instill transparency in the contracting process as they implement the economic stimulus bill.

Appearing before the Senate government affairs committee today, Orszag said:

I didn’t realize that a "black people don’t brush their teeth" stereotype existed. Or is that only in the black community? Or is dental hygiene an actual problem in the black community?

I’m guessing the Limbaugh demographic assumes the hippity-hoppers on them beer commercials have all those gold teeth because they’re not flossing enough. I have a friend working for the correctional system who says that there really *is* a problem with third-generation-welfare-recipients who come to prison never having been taught to use a toothbrush… but *they’re* usually from the Eminem/Debbie Schussel demographic. You know those horror stories about "meth mouth"? Those gummy-jawed Bad Examples had terrible dental hygiene long before they joined the gummint’s War Against Some Drugs on the losing side. Yet another reason why HeadStart and S-CHIP are so freakin’ important.

@Laura W: My favorite part was the scared shitless look on that poor baby Jarhead’s face when Obama stopped and shook his hand, poor kid didn’t know whether to drop the salute or not and then stood there with a look of horror on his face as Obama went up the steps trying to figure out if he was going to be in trouble for doing it.

BTW I’m mostly amused at his confusion like I would be amused at my own kids in a similar situation and I spend a lot of time with baby Squids so I see a lot of this kind of thing.

Not so much what the young man might be feeling but being really touched by how Obama broke the formality, probably asked the guy his name, shook his hand, probably patted his shoulder. He’s touchy/feely. I likes that.

I really get into watching him closely. I find his facial expressions, tone inflections, and body language quite revealing, in GOOD ways. There is such a natural, spontaneous, in-the-moment, capital "P" presence to him.
