Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

Consistently wrong since 2002

The Giant Orange Man Baby is having a bad day.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

Hey hey, RFK, how many kids did you kill today?

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

The snowflake in chief appeared visibly frustrated when questioned by a reporter about egg prices.

Keep the Immigrants and deport the fascists!

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

This country desperately needs a functioning fourth estate.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

If you are still in the gop, you are either an extremist yourself, or in bed with those who are.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

Stand up, dammit!

The line between political reporting and fan fiction continues to blur.

Fear and negativity are contagious, but so is courage!

Searched through the CD vault this week and played The Clash’s Give ‘Em Enough Rope. Had not listened to it in probably 10 years. Great great record. Anyone want to discuss ‘Best forgotten/most underrated albums’ as a topic? (Not meaning, of course, ‘albums best forgotten’, although that is a deserving topic also).

McCain offers more advice to Obama:

"The message of the election was, sit down and work together. They obviously are not doing that," he said.

The Republicans’ votes on the stimulus bill suggest that they aren’t listening to McCain either.

Sleeper hit: Grateful Dead’s Two From the Vault. Early (’68, I think) show that features the Dead’s Blues Rock sound before some of the Folkier influences are developed. Also has an incredible version of Walk Me Out in the Morning Dew that ends when the venue pulls the plug on them for going over time.

Anyone see the story being featured on Memeorandum about Bridges TV owner beheading his wife? Bridges TV was founded to portray Muslims in a better way. The reporting says she was seeking a divorce from him and had filed an order to keep him away. (yes, I should be able to quote the order more intelligently) Sorry, I am a bit stressed over the one two punch for our area.

Fishbone’s s/t EP, most anything by Pop Will Eat Itself, The Eels’ Beautiful Freak, Television’s Marquee Moon (another Kool Kid favorite that doesn’t get enough play), David Byrne & Brian Eno’s My Life in the Bush With Ghosts, The Sugarcubes Life’s Too Good, and the Cornelius EP Gum solely for the Petra Hayden versions of the song Music. A commentator here once seemed to demean those who process septic tank permits through local government agencies.

So say you do a water test for your well, and find that it is contaminated with bacteria. So you think to yourself, I wonder if the dog is crapping in my well, or if my septic system is failing?

Well, if this ever happens to you, you will be able to refer back to this Saturday Morning Open Thread and get the answer to your question, courtesy of one who has processed septic tank permits through local governments.

If the ratio of Fecal Streptococci to Fecal Coliform is greater than four, it ain’t the dog, my friends.

Check out CNN’s breakdown of the winners and losers in the stimulus bill if you haven’t already.

How many GOPers will carefully neglect to mention that they voted against the bill once it actually starts helping their district or state? My guess is all of them. And how many will characterize their obstinate insistence on tax cuts only as "We wanted a bigger stimulus bill but the Dems wouldn’t give us one."

    @Reverend Dennis:

Everything they do is about the Republican Party. They’ve somehow managed to convince themselves that there’s this huge segment of the country that care about their political party, and how and when it will rise from the ashes.
People have trouble recalling their House member’s name, and that’s true for Democrats and Republicans. Republicans think there’s going to be this huge national outrage over the specific mechanics of the census and how that relates to House seats?
Right or wrong, I think people completely tune out process arguments. It’s partly why there was no concerted national outcry over Bush V Gore, and that was a somewhat simple idea, ostensibly, at least, and had a solid "fairness" subtext. Americans were completely exhausted and ready to end that debate in two months. The census is going to be riveting?

Everybody watch "Dollhouse" last night? The whole episode is available free online. Eliza Dushku (Faith from "Buffy") is totally nekkid the whole time. It’s awesome. But very respectful in some sorta post-feminist way. Besides, if we don’t watch it, Joss Whedon will go write Sci-Fi on some OTHER f’ed-up planet.

Speaking of fecal Valentine’s Days, BOB-

    I am waiting for visitors.

Specifically, a married couple of old alcoholics who knew me when I was with my ex-wife are coming to my house on Valentine’s Day to reclaim some records the woman gave me years ago, except that she doesn’t remember which are hers so she proposes to go through ALL my records in order to find the ones she means to take back.

I am NOT making this up. Worst Valentine’s Day ever for a single person, to epic, epic proportions :D

The only thing that could be worse is, having arranged this, they will turn around and not show up… which is looking more and more likely! :P imagine, all that AND being totally alone at the same time. Go me.

Missed the fairness doctrine thread yesterday however it was uncanny that I was thinking about Rush Limbaugh only yesterday afternoon while I was in the car. I have listened to him for years, seeing he is on my local AM station. Yesterday he was on another one of his "I want him to fail rants"and I felt like I had slipped back in time. Remember then? When the Repubs were in power (prior to 2006). He would rant daily "they (the democrats) want this country to fail because it is the only way that they can get back into power" blah blah, so basically he is doing precisely what he railed against the democrats for all those years ago. I wish I had the ability to find the transcripts from back then to show what a hypocrit he truly is.

Two of my three cats, Casper and Satchmo, have finally reached detente and their wounds are healing nicely. The turf wars are finally over.

Under-rated music? Danny O’Keefe’s Breezy Stories (circa 1974). He’s from NOLA and his songs really capture that. "Good Time Charlie’s Got the Blues", written by O’Keefe, was covered by other artists whose names escape me and made him some decent mail box money. But the gem is his "Farewell to Storyville".

Anything from Lowell George and Jerry Jeff Walker, too.

I can now add "roofing" to my resume. The shed is covered. The next wind rising above ‘light and variable’ may rip it right back off, and the neighbors are already laughing; but, with the Obamamerica Depression on its way, a guy can use all the padding and enhancement he can get. Who knows, maybe I can get a job nailing shingles on the way stations along that new light-rail coming to rural Tejas.

    All aboard!

@p.a.: Takoma Park, Md., about 1989 or so. Plumber comes to my place to fix a leaky sink. We get to chatting. Turns out he was Root Boy Slim’s roommate.

    Wow, from the Wiki article:

[Root] went on to Yale University, where he majored in African American studies, graduating in 1967. He was a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. His fraternity brothers included future President George W. Bush. MacKenzie was a year older than Bush.

While at Yale, MacKenzie formed a band with classmate and fraternity brother Greenlee, who was captain of Yale’s football team. The band was named Prince La La and the Midnight Creepers. Band members wore ermine capes, silver lame hot pants and boasted that they were never invited for return engagements.

The year after MacKenzie and Greenlee graduated, they returned to the DKE house during Yale’s homecoming. Bush, who since their departure had become president of DKE, threw them out and banned them from the house.

Now that’s what I call funny!

I missed the Fairness Doctrine thread, but since this one is open, I’ll leave my weekly pathetic blogwhore. I have egg on my face too. Never thought anyone but me would be even mentioning it. Oddly, in the interim, I’ve changed my mind.

Forget the Fairness Doctrine. I don’t think it will work. I have a better solution. Although, as one of my commenters pointed out, there’s no reason we couldn’t do both.

    @AhabTRuler:

I agree with you in favoring a couple of the earlier XTC records, although Another Satellite is one of my fave XTC songs. The first pressings of Skylarking didn’t contain Dear God. That was added to the album later. I’ve got the early issues of the album but bought the 12" 45 of Dear God.

My favorite Andy Partridge story is about the student who forced his high school staff (at either knife- or gun-point. I can’t recall) to play the song Dear God over the school PA. Andy’s reaction to this was to say that he wished the student had brought a bazooka and made them listen to the whole album. heh.

My cat Halley was pronounced healthy but ‘plump’ by the vet today. She said that she could still feel Halley’s ribs so she couldn’t be called fat. She weighs 15.5 pounds.

That’s my dog, Pippin. He was named for the goofy hobbit and has pretty much lived up to that rep. He turned ten last month and so far he hasn’t slowed down at all, so here’s hoping it stays that way for a few more years. He’s actually half American Eskimo, part blue heeler and probably part blond Lab.

He really is a love. He wants to make friends with all the people we meet on our walks. He’s also an escape artist and is always patrolling the the yard for any weakness in the perimeter. Fortunately, I live in a very dog-friendly neighborhood. That pic was taken last summer when everything was green and beautiful.
