Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Come on, man.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

Infrastructure week. at last.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

Roe isn’t about choice, it’s about freedom.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

The self-anointed president

Make Michael Scherer stop:

There is a battle looming in Congress, a contest that will pit many of the most powerful companies in America against each other, potentially reallocate trillions of dollars in spending, and literally impact the future health and well-being of each and every American. No one knows how the conflict will end, just yet, or who the winners and losers will be. But if Thursday’s Health Care Reform summit at the White House is any indication, there is no doubt who will be standing at the middle of the scrum: The nation’s self-anointed Mediator-in-Chief, President Barack Obama.

Was Bush ever referred to as the “self-anointed Commander-in-Chief”?

I guess I should just be happy the article wasn’t titled “Obama’s petty health care strategy“.

I will say it one last time, Scherer:

If it’s so bad to have nationalized health care FOR THOSE WHO CANNOT AFFORD IT, why are the Japanese car companies hailed as much as they are by your side of the aisle? They can pay their workers good salaries and let Tokyo pick up the health care costs.

Seems like it makes sense to me!

Scherer has been exhibiting serious contempt for Obama since the election season. I think he drunk the McCain 08 kool-aid, and it colors his perception of everything Obama does now.

"Mediator" is the pejorative here because mediation is intended to lead to consensual resolution of disputes. That is, the dispute ends and all sides have to concede, even if grudgingly, that they had a say in the resolution. Scherer, and the media generally, want the health care dispute to continue forever or, if it must be resolved, they want one side to force something on everyone else, who can then be brought forward to air their grievances for the next few decades.

No, because the Constitution already anointed him with that title. A more apt comparison would be, "Was Bush ever referred to as the ‘self-anointed Decider?’"

So what’s Scherer’s beef? Does he want Obama to just smack the Republicans in the mouth and say "get in line" instead, the way Bush did to the Democrats? Does he want Obama to cave and let the Republicans walk all over him, even though he won a huge victory and has massive majorities in both houses? What’s wrong with the President being a fucking mediator on an issue?

    What a flaming dick.

Maybe someone should remind him that Obama won the election for the highest office office in the land and any executive position involves resolving competing claims, and one way to do that is mediate. Maybe Scherer would feel better if Obama just used a dart board to come up with solutions.

Um, what the hell does Michael Scherer expect the president to do in coming up with a policy for universal health care? Just say "this is it" and that’s that? Or let big pharma, the AMA, and Kaiser make the policy with no input or negotiation? Since when isn’t a president expected to mediate among competing ideas and interests?

Gawd, I’m so sick of these media types who display ignorance at every step and on every possible subject that matters. My latest TIME subscription is about up and they’ve been bombarding me with renewal notices. To all my friends in the media, the Pundits, and the Republican establishment:

    Hi, guys.

Look, I know this idea will strike you as absurd and shatter your world view, but bear with me as I kindly explain that: We’re NOT THAT STUPID.

You see, when millions of people went to the polls, including a majority of independent voters, to vote for Barack Obama, we weren’t fooled by a confusing ballot, or guilted by white shame into voting for the black guy, or expecting a Republican-lite leader, no, we all voted for the ‘liberal’ Democrat, knowing his policies, knowing all of the 20 odd years of inane and oft stupid political slurs you’ve reported and conjured about liberals, knowing that much of his domestic policies would be a 180 degree turn from the previous 8 years, and knowing that there might be some items we didn’t agree with him on.

But you know why we voted for him anyway?

Because the Republicans governed this country into a shithole, and we didn’t want more of the same. We wanted a 180 degree turn. We didn’t want compromise. We didn’t want obstruction. We didn’t want a government that was going to sit around on its ass doing nothing.

We VOTED FOR the liberal Democrat.

    We appointed him.

And we did it because you suck.

    Philip Greenspun:

This evening’s New York Times was worrisome. An inset box showed that the S&P 500 had fallen 4.25 percent for the day, wiping out roughly a year of investment returns. A few months ago this would have been the top story. Today, however, it did not even make the front page.

For context, consider this, from Harper’s Index:

Number of times in 2008 that the S&P 500 closed up or down 5 percent in a single day: 17

Number of times between 1956 and 2007 it did this: 17

@7: there is a decent (though covered in a few decades worth of dust) argument that the president shouldn’t be mediating Congress in drafting legislation, since it is the legislature’s job to actually write the damn laws in the first place. It’s that quaint idea of separation of powers.

It’s one thing for the president to transmit suggested bills to the Congress (which he has the constitutional authority to do) and a whole other thing to be involved in the actual negotiation and drafting of legislation.

It’s going to get ugly. One way to put it in perspective is to read the hyperventilating on the Right when faced with Clinton’s first budget, in 1993. Clinton raised taxes across the board. Bill Richardson (hah!) had to round up votes in the House, and he still lost 38 Democratic votes over that budget.
