    President Obama may have abolished contentious Bush-era restraints on federal funding of stem cell research on Monday, but a legislative obstacle still remains for scientists seeking more money.

    A spending bill that Obama signed on Wednesday explicitly bans federal funding of any "research in which a human embryo or embryos are destroyed, discarded, or knowingly subjected to risk of injury or death," language that pertains to creation of new stem cell lines.

    This provision, known as the Dickey-Wicker amendment, was included in the 465-page omnibus spending bill that will fund government agencies through September. The amendment is a measure Congress has included in spending bills in every fiscal year since 1996.

    So, how is this different than the Bush ban?

    Oddly, laws and contracts don’t protect the pensions and health benefits of union workers when their employers file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

    Luckily, the courts are still able to protect the plutocracy!

    Spent most of my childhood in Albuquerque, tho both parents were born and raised in WV. I went back to WV one summer to visit the extended family and developed swimmer’s ear from the humidity. Miss that dry clime.

Anyway I dont know how many of you have heard the old line that minorities and women have to work twice as hard to get the same treatment but it seems as if the media is treating PBO like that. Hes doing too much hes biting off more than he can chew, two months ago he was talking down the economy he talks positive about it now hes too optimistic. this is the same shit we saw during the campaign

    I spent some time Albuquerque about 10 years ago, but relocated to the sticks on the southern edge of the Gila near Silver City. Not much fine dining, but lots of coyotes and a few wolves. And the dry pristine air here is a treasure. Was living in Biloxi for much of the 90’s and want no more of humidity.

    Seriously — don’t pensions get defaulted on with some regularity? I assume there’s a "legal process" for doing so — that bankruptcy allows existing contracts with retirees to be abrogated. But a veneer of legality doesn’t make that right nor does it make the payout of bonuses to jackasses that drove AIG to insolvency right. If this is the behavior the law allows (mandates, even) it needs to changed.

    Good CBS Sunday Morning today. The story about how our founding fathers found themselves in bankruptcy at the end of their lives was pretty interesting, and it also maked me like Harry Truman even more than I already did.

    And Eddie Doyle, the laid-off bartender at the Bull & Finch… that was very depressing to me on a personal level. I blogged about him earlier in the week, and it was nice to see an actual interview with him.

    The only reason to have him on is if he:

    a) Agrees with any of Obama’s policies
    b) Admits the administration tortured prisoners
    c) Admits he orchestrated the outing of Valerie Plame Wilson
    d) Admits he deliberately sold the Iraq war on false pretenses

    Any of those things would be newsworthy. Otherwise, this is nothing more than giving him a platform to do what everyone knows he’ll do: slam the current administration and lie through his teeth about the Bush administration.
