Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The snowflake in chief appeared visibly frustrated when questioned by a reporter about egg prices.

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

The republican ‘Pastor’ of the House is an odious authoritarian little creep.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

With all due respect and assumptions of good faith, please fuck off into the sun.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

The revolution will be supervised.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires.

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

The fight for our country is always worth it. ~Kamala Harris

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

Dear media: perhaps we ought to let Donald Trump speak for himself!

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

By request. Meanwhile, I see Coach K is now concern trolling Obama regarding his bracket picks. All this “focus on the economy” stuff is killing me. To listen to folks, all Obama needs to do is get in a quiet room, concentrate real hard, and the economy will be fixed!

*** Update ***

And apparently, Coach K was just screwing around, and once again I fail for paying attention to anything produced by Fox News. I never learn.

I continue to think that a few RICO indictments would do more to quell the public anger and restore consumer confidence than all the bailouts in the world.

Meanwhile, I’m hoping my initial boasting hasn’t jinxed my picks. I’m feeling a little shaky on my bracket already. Of course I can’t really remember who I picked except for the final four. I just want to look at my card tonight and see a lot of green. Which is the same way I feel about checking the stock market standing at 4:00pm every day.

Josh Marshall has just made a great point about this whole AIG bonus scandal. Basically, he agrees that the bonus money being given out (stolen) is a minor slice of the total being given for the AIG bailout. But then he counters that the real issue is not the amount of the payments themselves, but that the payments persist in the face of public outrage – given how much the US government now appears to own of that firm – which shows an impotence at the executive that Obama must counter at the risk of losing his authority:

I think the American people have demonstrated over the last six months that they’re willing to expand vast sums of money and endure great economic hardship without holding the damage against their political leaders. Effectiveness, in the sense of how long it takes to turn the economy around, is something they seem willing to be flexible on. But not on who’s in charge. And that’s what’s at stake here. As a matter of transparency and truth-telling, what Geithner knew about the bonuses may be significant. But it’s really all fine print that is largely beside the point. From Geithner and Summers, and indirectly from Obama, we keeping hearing financial-legal versions of ‘It’s bigger than the both of us’. Like we’re along for the ride, still taking dictates from the people who got us into the mess we’re in.

Emphases mine, in italics (blockquote bolds the 1st paragraph here by default).

It’s always funny to read comments at other sites. The same poster who claims Obama’s policies are ruining the country on minute is pissed off the next minute because he took the time to fill out an NCAA bracket instead of working.

And I’m sure these same critics yelling "get back to work" were very concerned about Bush setting the record for presidential vacation time while the country was going to hell.

Some people on EPSN compared this to Bush’s steroids-in-baseball sideline in an SOTU speech.

The unpleasant truth is that some people have more attention to pay than others. As a national figure for a decade, GWB hasn’t shown to me that he has the attention to pay to as many things at the same time as Obama does.

On the other hand, the best turn on this "issue": Rep. Joe Courtney, D-CT, who said "The President, in selecting UNC, shows he hasn’t been watching enough college basketball." Heeheehee.

when carter did that, they accused him of failing to delegate and being too much of a micromanager. and the PR image of carter working hard, they somehow equated due diligence to contributing to the feeling of economic malaise. "Ooo, carter looks worried, he never takes the weekend off. things must be worse than we think."

doesn’t matter what obama does because they have a ready made line of attack that goes at him both ways. if he does x, they complain he isn’t doing y. if he does y, they complain he isn’t doing x. there is no pleasing republicans because they’re unprincipled.

What authority is that? The Unitary kind? I feel like we’re twisted, post-Bush. Obama isn’t supposed to issue directives.
There is a Congress. They are ( properly, finally ) addressing the issue of conditions on the money they dole out. That they’re doing so after 8 years of accepting directives from the executive branch is regrettably tardy, but I’m willing to forgive and forget.
Shuster called this dog and pony show by Congress "meta ass covering". I agree. What I don’t understand is why everyone is letting them dodge this.
Obama is moving. You or I may not agree with what he’s doing, but he’s acting. That Congress has now, finally, decided to get off their ass and act like big grown up legislators is heartening. What isn’t heartening is how they have neglected the job they were given until the pitch forks came out, and are now blaming the executive branch.

NC State folks are exceptional haters; should they learn to focus their angst towards academics or athletics, they could be an MIT or have a sports dynasty to rival Wooden’s.

But having lived and worked with Dook folk, well, I’ll try to make this brief: if you have a Dook colleague in your department, get ready to work some late hours. The Creator has never produced an uglier, lazier, class-conscious specimen as a Dookie.

You can draw a direct line between the value our society places on grade-inflated, private institutions of higher ‘learning’, the previous administration, and our financial catastrophe.

Pampered a$$holes, the lot of them. And Jeebus those kids are ugly.

Hey, if you were the coach of a #2 seed and the president picked your archrival to win the championship, what would you say?

It’s not like he has any SAY in the outcome.

The NCAA’s a lot like in the Dim Caucus in the Senate in that respect…

Obama doesn’t pay attention to NCAA basketball=elitist. Obama makes an offhand remark about who he thinks is going to win the tournament=he’s not serious enough about the job.

This has been today’s quick lesson in Wingnuttery.

What is up with the people of Tennessee that they keep sending Lamar Alexander back to the Senate? To call him "dumb as a post" is to gratuitously insult every post ever made.

PS Coach K is an insufferable right wing asshole, regardless of whether or not he was joking in this instance.

As for Lamar Alexander, he should be shipped off to a reeducation camp to clear brush.

Oh, you meant the specific players I mentioned.

Yeah, Ferry was a bust, but Laettner was better than people think: 13.3 ppg, 6.9 rpg, and 2.7 apg over a 13-year career.

He was also good on Six Feet Under.

I’ve always respected Duke. Like UNC a lot. As I’ve matured, I’ve really come to appreciate the dynasties that always contend. That’s a feat to be admired. Don’t really have a team I hate. Don’t really understand the hatin’. Not really a hater anyway.

Edit: Except for Terry McAuliffe. Stop spamming my answering machine asshole. I ain’t voting for you ever for anything. I’ll move first.

Now see, therein lies the psychology behind my strategy.
I’m hanging out a cool 49 out of 51 (or 52? The rankings confuse me, as does the whole system). The two contenders below me did not even PICK! I am certain to blow them right outta the water.

So I can just sit here and drink wine and look for fun youtube videos.
Low expectations and under-achieving have their advantages.
