Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Chutkan laughs. Lauro sits back down.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Please don’t feed the bears.

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

Roe isn’t about choice, it’s about freedom.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

It’s a doggy dog world.

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

There is no compromise when it comes to body autonomy. You either have it or you don’t.

“Why isn’t this Snickers bar only a nickel?”

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

If marriage is the equivalent of selling yourself into slavery, women with self respect should reject the offer.

He wakes up lying, and he lies all day.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

Lead, Follow, Or Get Ignored

by John Cole|  April 25, 20099:31 am| 68 Comments

This post is in: Politics

The new strategy- Republicans have six months to provide input on a health care bill, otherwise they will just do it without them:

Mr. Obama has given way in some battles with Congress, but the new stance suggests he may be much less willing to compromise when it comes to health care, his top legislative priority, even if it means a bitter partisan fight.

The no-filibuster arrangement is fiercely opposed by Republican leaders, who say health care is too important to be exempted from the Senate rules that usually mean major bills must win support from 60 senators.

At the White House meeting this week, Mr. Obama told senators from both parties that he did not want a health care overhaul to fail if it came up a vote shy of the 60 needed to break filibusters, the people with knowledge of the session said. Republicans have used the procedure themselves in the past, but Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Republican leader, told Mr. Obama in the meeting that that approach was likely to heighten partisan tensions in Congress.

Oh, no. Does this mean they might call him a socialist or claim he hates America or is going to take away all your guns and coddle dictators? Because that could be devastating.

Has anyone seen the movie Earth?

Also, I have babbled about this several times in open threads, but I have finally found a hand lotion that does not make my hands feel greasy when I use it. It is called Borage Dry Skin Therapy Lotion – 8 oz, and it is a little pricey (like 12 bucks in my grocery store) and leaves your hands smelling like an old bar, but for once I can use lotion without having my hands slippery for an hour.

And yes, I fully expect to be called prissy again.

Tedisco conceded, btw.

It is just beautiful weather here today. I have no idea what I am going to do, but I think it will involve sitting on a deck somewhere. I might have to go galt on a margarita. Does that even make sense?

*** Update ***

Better grab some condoms and Plan B, because Republicans are loose in NY:

Hide the 17 year old’s.

*** Update #2 ***

I guess, technically, I did go Galt on a margarita. I talked loudly about it, told everyone I was going to have one, and then didn’t. Instead I just had some shrimp salad and a pellegrino.

Tech Question

by John Cole|  April 24, 20092:10 pm| 101 Comments

This post is in: Science & Technology

Currently I am running a Windows Vista system with a 1 terabyte raid array that I had networked to my old XP system, but it (the old XP system) apparently has decided to drop dead. Is there any easy way to simply install the hard drive from my old XP box into my new system? I have a bunch of archival stuff I need off that drive and am just not in the mood to fuss with fixing the old box.

Also, I am currently playing Badmotorfinger so loud while working that I fully expect my neighbors to call the police. I can’t help it. It is beautiful out and I just want to be out in the sun, but I am stuck here doing work. Feh.

Tunch is hiding.

*** Update ***

Apparently I have some Republican commenters:

All you have to do is waterboard the XP box, and it’ll give you all the data it has.

Thanks.

Choking On the Ashes of Her Enemy

by John Cole|  April 24, 20091:03 pm| 52 Comments

This post is in: Foreign Affairs, The Failed Obama Administration (Only Took Two Weeks)

A perceptive piece by Daniel Larison (via his blog):

Critics have been belittling President Obama’s recent visit with Latin American leaders as a “contrition” and “apology” tour. But a more accurate tag would be “accountability” tour, and it’s long overdue.

***

What is interesting about Obama’s non-confrontational approach to both leaders is that it suggests Obama has learned not to feed the proverbial trolls. On the one hand, Obama has shown a willingness to engage hostile or critical foreign leaders in discussion. But he has also shown no desire to participate in international polemics, perhaps because he has come to see that the U.S. gains nothing from such confrontations. Better still, by largely ignoring the rantings of anti-American zealots, Obama may be able to split persuadable critics of America from those who are reflexively and genuinely anti-American. In an amusing irony, Obama, who is often accused of being an insubstantial rhetorician, has refrained from the long-winded, idealistic bluster on the international stage that his predecessor frequently indulged in. And it may already be paying dividends.

Well worth a read.

Let’s Just Give The Next Guy a Week

Putting aside the idiocy of the entire media created “100 days” nonsense, I have now read no fewer than three pieces and two polls looking at the President’s first hundred days in office, and we haven’t even hit 100 days yet.

We seriously have too many pundits.

Grades Are Due

by John Cole|  April 24, 200912:52 pm| 12 Comments

This post is in: Domestic Politics

It is the end of the semester at the Lake Wobegon School for International Finance:

After a two-month wait, the nation’s 19 largest banks will start learning on Friday how they fared in important federal examinations — and which among them will need another bailout from the government or private investors.

While many of the banks reported surprisingly strong first-quarter earnings, they are by no means out of the woods. A number of them are likely to need more capital to weather a prolonged recession, and the losses that might accompany it.

The Federal Reserve intends to disclose, in general terms, how it conducted the stress tests on Friday afternoon, but the government will not publicly reveal the results until May 4. In between, Wall Street is bracing for a possible roller-coaster ride in financial stocks as investors scramble to do their own assessment of the financial industry’s strongest and the weakest players.

This will be fun. I can’t wait to learn how everyone is exceptional, but some still need trillions.
