As a Pittsburgher I could get used to the home team regularly winning major contests. However, as a reality check us hockey and football fans will periodically be forced to visit the closet where we keep the Pirates. Also: Cleveland.

Um, yeah, but…PNC is a really beautiful park! And tickets are so cheap they practically give them away.
(cough, cough)

They play in a nice yard, though. It’s a well furnished closet.

Proud Clevelander here.
BTW, saw games at both the Steelers and Pirates stadiums last year and both of them have really nice places.

Yeah but Tim, $9 bucks for AAAA ball is better than a movie (same ticket price but the minor league team allows you to drink beer during the three hours of waiting for something to happen)

Site comment question/suggestion:
Would it be possible to install the Subscribe to Comments plug-in? I know it helps page views when we have to refresh to see if anyone’s responded to a post, or follow the discussion, but it would be nice to have an automated option.
thnx

I especially like that the link to the story about the Pens game on the MSN home page reads
Ahhh…….. awakening the Dark Lord to help us win at hockey.

Can someone explain the Cleveland comment. Is it derogatory or jealousy or something else?
Agi
Cleveland rocks!

@BDeevDad:
I am not quite sure how he meant it, but at least from the Cleveland perspective the Cleveland – Pittsburgh professional football rivalry is the most important sports rivalry, and it often carries over into other areas.

Yo Pens likely advance to the SCF seems all but a moot point, as the hated, Yankee-esque Red Wangs seem all but destined to smoke the Hawx and crush their SC Final oppys.

Cleek got it. Like the Pirates, Cleveland serves as a useful memento mori, a reminder that winning franchises are not an inherent quality of the human condition but rather a fortunate circumstance which one should never take for granted.

as a White Sox fan primarily and a Chicago fan mostly (and an old man on top of it all) I have to say the Pirates have a hell of a lot better experience in the WS in my life-time than any of my teams – and I still think Maserowski walks on water for what he did to the Yankees in ’60.
the bears are so ’85; the cubs are still waiting for next year; the hawks have to wait for all the wings old guys retire. Our only multi champs are Jordan’s bulls but I’m not that big of a b’ball fan.
go Fire.

Deleted, wrong thread.

Ah, the poor Pirates. I’d go watch them play anytime though as long as it was at PNC park. I lived near Pittsburgh for only a year. (Near=Butler,PA) but did go to one game at PNC. Damn, that’s a NICE park.
Bill Belichick
This is the Cav’s year. I can’t wait to see how they screw it up this time.

Cleveland has not won a professional championship – baseball, football, or basketball – since the Browns won one in 1964. Before the Super Bowl. They also had the pleasure of watching Art Modell abandon Cleveland for Baltimore where he then won a Super Bowl as the Ravens. The Indians lost the WS to Atlanta in 6 games in 1995 and to the Marlins in 7 games when Jose Mesa infamously blew the save attempt. The Indians have not won a WS since 1948. The Cavaliers have been to one Finals in 2007. They were swept by the Spurs. Things look promising this year but Clevelanders know better than to get their hopes up.
Cincinatti has at least won the WS in my lifetime.
BDeevDad
Thanks. Since this is an open thread, any Californians have a good voter guide for today?
Joel
If the Cavaliers don’t win then we will be forced to watch more Kobe commercials and Spike Lee’s crappy documentary. Go Cavs.
Comrade Kevin
@BDeevDad: No-No-No-No-No-No
There’s my voter guide, for props 1A-1F.
Also, have a look at Calitics.

Go Twins, Vikings, Wild!, and Timberwolves.
Yeah, right. Fortunately, Pittsburgh is my adopted city so I can root for them, too (Troy Polamalu. Yum).

Looks like Crooks and Liars is celebrating 9/11 truther Jesse Ventura.

I’ll bet LeBron is at least smart enough not to snub Obama when the Cavs win though.
