You think they’d knock this shit off after that disastrous fighter jet Air Force One stunt the guy had to resign over, but there’s a two-hour delay on flights into JFK this afternoon because of an air show.

If you’re talking about the recent Manhattan fly-over screw up, it wasn’t a “jet fighter”, but a plane used as Air Force One. A jet fighter going overhead would probably make people in NYC feel safer…

Huh. I got the question mark too. Wonder why that is? Maybe it has something to do with the all caps. I’ve noticed the links on this blog cut off if there are all caps within the text. It’s still hyperlinked, but it’s not blue or whatever color the rest of it is.

    It was both, actually.

A fighter and Air Force One. The fighter was taking the pictures.

I think having a fighter trailing the 747 in fact added to the anxiety.

The air show is over Jones Beach, northeast of JFK. The real reason for any delay this afternoon is thunderstorms approaching from the northwest.

I will never fly in or out of JFK on a Sunday afternoon again. My plane was stuck on the runway for four freaking hours this time last year. We waited so long we had to go back to the gate for more fuel. I’ve been told by other travelers since then that JFK+Sunday=havoc.

DougJ, quitcher whining. They’ve never shut down airspace at a major international airport for an air show that I’ve ever heard of. They have a huge one at the ANG base right smack dab next door to PIA and never shut it down. Not even for the Stealth bombers flying over. And I espcially have no sympathy for DFHs jaunting to commie, elitist European surrender monkey places like Italy.

this annual air show began in 2004. The 2009 show will be on Memorial Day Weekend, May 23rd and 24th, from 10am to 3pm. Last year, the show had record attendance with over 400,000 people on Saturday and Sunday combined.

I assume that your top post is tongue in cheek.

What’s really funny is how quickly the White House caved to hysterical reactions of the MSM over the VC-25 flyover (the airplane that is AF1 when the president is on board).

Fucking ridiculous. So every time NYC residents see an airplane now, they are going to run like in a science fiction movie?

I had to go to an air show once, about twenty years ago. My now-ex-husband dragged me and our kids out to it in the SoCal desert in the middle of summer so he could impress us with how wonderful the aerospace industry is. We went with another family and met up with the other million people (literally) who’d come out for the event. It was hotter than hell and the lines for the porta-potties were miles long. We watched the planes do their acrobatics and ate our picnic and then when it was over one million people all headed back for their homes in the Southland at the same time. It took us four hours to get home.

What’s the opposite of a peak experience? Pit? Thanks for reminding me of one of the pit experiences of my life.

    @SrirachaHotSauce:

So every time NYC residents see an airplane now, they are going to run like in a science fiction movie?

Well, let’s see. I’m a Manhattanite who watched the planes fly into the WTC from approximately the 45th floor of the buildings at Madison Square Garden. You’ll probably remember what a perfect view that was, since it’s where CNN, et. al., shot most of the footage looking down upon the WTC from midtown.

Do we run everytime we see an airplane overhead? No, of course not. But a lot of us still experience a twinge of anxiety or panic – especially if the plane is flying low.

It was a beautiful morning. No clouds, perfect temps. We had a similiar day about a month ago. It was first time I’d gotten through such a day without thinking of 9/11 till after sunset.

So a little sensitivity to the fact that a lot of people here were traumatized by 9/11, and still harbor some anxieties from it, might not kill you. Just saying.

@Yutsano: Why wait? We could have our own movie thread right now.

Okay. how about a real movie thread? I have my DVDs stored in those narrow IKEA bookcases. The top shelf in the first one on the left holds:
“Phantom Museums: The Short Films of the Quay Brothers”
    “Almost Famous”
    “Robots”
“Sci-Fi “(“Fourteen movies! Over 21 hours!) including the incomparable serial “Radar Men from the Moon.”
    “Millions”
    “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”
    So much for cinematic pretense.

    @JGabriel:

Sorry, no sale. I live in a city where airplanes fly low overhead every hour of the day and night. It’s not that big a deal. Manhattan has a major, busy airport on 3 sides, East, North, and West.

911 was almost 8 years ago. Sometimes planes fly low.

That hysteria over the VC-25 was fucking ridiculous.

And this is the kind of absurd shit that gets disseminated and nobody just stops the tape and says, are you people fucking kidding me?

The NYPD was so upset about the demand for secrecy that Police Commissioner Ray Kelly vowed never to follow such a directive again and he accused the feds of inciting fears of a 9/11 replay.

“Did it show an insensitivity to the psychic wounds New York City has after 9/11? Absolutely. No questions about it. It was quite insensitive,” Kelly said.

The mayoral aide who neglected to tell Mayor Michael Bloomberg about it was reprimanded.

Yeah, it was such an awful transgression that a mayoral aide just forgot to tell the mayor. Maybe because he didn’t think it was that big a deal? Maybe the Mayor should resign?

Maybe a huge tape should be draped over the island, that says “Babies on board?”

And the police dept doesn’t see the need for security when there are AF1 operations in the area? We should publish the expected flight path of this airplane because it’s so big and scary that peoples’ fears outweigh legitimate securit concerns?

Who manages these things for the terrified people of NYC? Is there like an agency? Apparently the mayor and the chief of police don’t know about it.

I think they put all the attention on the White House because they are too chicken to admit that they preside over a city of little old ladies who scare them to death.

My husband was piloting a plane that was due to land at JFK and he called from the departing airport to let me know he would be delayed due to the air show. He was kind of ticked about it more for his passengers’ sakes and for his FO, who is a commuter and would miss his connection back in Cincinnati due to the late arrival.
