Here is a thread for you.
Not to be a tease, but no Lily pictures yet. I went over to Tammy and Brian’s house to introduce Lily to their puppy Samantha (who has been featured here before), and I took a bunch of pictures and apparently the memory stick was not seated right because nothing is showing up. Weird.
Tammy and I went to Petco and got a Steelers collar and a bed for Lily’s crate, then came home and set it up in the bedroom. As I was putting the doggie bed in the crate, silly Lily jumped in before I could even get it all the way in and has not budged since. I figure she has had a traumatic couple of weeks, what with the move from her old home, the chaos of the pound, then having a rectal thermometer greeting her at the vets, then a pleasant hello from Tunch, and then a bath and Petco, so I am just letting her be. She just needs to be left alone and get comfortable.
So maybe some pics tomorrow. And in all honesty, the Tunch and Lily introduction was really quite painless. Tunch was at the door waiting for me when I got home, he jumped back and got the mohawk look for a few minutes, but Lilly just ignored him and went about her own business. This will work out ok.
Also, Lily is apparently smaller than I thought, because she is only 17 lbs. according to the vet. My mental image of her is bigger. And she doesn’t seem that small in person. Must be the terrier in her. Or maybe Tunch’s fat butt has just really distorted my sense of normal.

Congratulations!
I’m sure it will get even easier as she gets more secure.
Louise
This is so exciting! Welcome, Lily! Your luck has changed, sweet girl. You’re going to be ok now.
(Kudos to Tunch for staying cool, for the most part.)
Joe Lisboa
Phew. Nail-biter of a first. Pens outshooting Wings pretty heavily. Wings penalty-kill looking sharp. One BS goalie interference penalty and one amazing defensive play by a stickless Zetterberg. Ozzie looks super-focused. On to the second …

It wasn’t just the crappy HD compression on Versus after all – the Pittsburgh ice really does have a bilious yellow cast to it. They seriously need some lighting/ice/imaging consultants.
Go Wings, even.
This is my sort of hockey – none of this silly crap like five or eight goals in a game. That said, I’m sure I just jinxed it.
The Grand Panjandrum
Nice touch with the Lily banner on the left. She looks just like the sort of dog that will console the crushed spirit of a fan of the runner-up for the Stanley Cup.
(Nice save by Fleury)
MrSnrub
I’m very pleased to hear about your new family member. Welcome home, Lily.
JL
Thanks for the update. It will work out!
demkat620
Good idea John. Give her a little space. She’ll be okay.
Show Tunch some love.
Joe Lisboa
And welcome, Lily!
JenJen
This is a damned intense game so far, no?
Rest well, Lily! You have no idea, litle angel, but you just won the Dog Lottery. :-)
auntieeminaz
Ignoring Tunch is the best thing Lily could have done for herself. Now Tunch can check Lily out without fear. It’s going to work out great.
Oh, and the Lily ad is wonderful. Brought tears to my eyes.
(Sorry to post this in the hockey thread but I got tired of refreshing the pet thread and finding no news or pictures.)

@JenJen:
ain’t that the truth.

Sounds like interspecies peace will prevail at the Cole digs. All is good. So far, an excellent hockey game. And in other news, Senate Pubs want to delay the Sotomayor hearings so the can read over her cases at the same rate they read over Roberts’ before his hearings. For Roberts, it was six a day over 55 days (the average is 45 days and it’ll be 48 days for Sotomayor). The problem is Roberts only had afew hundred cases. Sotomayor has well over three thousand. That would take us into 2011.

Many rescue dogs like the crate when they enter a new environment. I think it isn’t just trauma, but also that they’re accustomed to being in a small space. Might as well leave it out for her … it might also be a handy safe place if Tunch starts to go after her.
TenguPhule
More like the fabric of the space time continuium.
Joe Lisboa
Damn. Pens 1-0.
TenguPhule
up or down vote, bitchez!
Krista
Indeed. And I love that you called her “silly Lily”. I have a feeling that nickname is going to stick. She’ll do fine — anybody would be traumatized going through what she has in the last little while, poor little girlie.
How did she get along with the oh-so-adorable Samantha?
Keith G
I’m a long term cat person, so I just know Tunch is watching, thinking, running scenarios,…..waiting. Keep your camera charged and ready. You’ll have some wonderful entries for the family photo album.
In the end, I bet that these two special critters will grow to appreciate each other.

“I asked my cat where Lily, I could find
He said (urp) don’t be silly…” o/`

She’s way too tall and long (based on the photos) to only weigh 17lbs! Hopefully your vet was not as alarmed as I am at reading that, but I predict she will easily double her weight in the next 6 months. I am sure she is severely malnourished, from lack of quality food, nutrients, and the total stress of the horrible environment she came out of. Many dogs can’t eat when stressed, mine included. You didn’t say how long she was in the shelter, but I’d factor that in.
I also predict that by New Year’s Eve, 2010, I will have compiled a lengthy “Fat Dog Jokes at Lily’s Expense” treatise. But let’s be patient and give John some time to fatten her up. Unlike Tunch, however, she will eventually have to get down off of the futon and MOVE.

So true. I can’t wait till I live in a space where I can get a dog. And another cat. And then maybe another dog…etc.

I hope not to hear about the Red Wings getting away with and “subtle” interference given the couple not-subtle-at-all interference calls that could have gone against the Pens.
Krista
No idea if this is an open thread or not, but at any rate, I have to say that damn, I am feeling really pregnant today. Bulky, unwieldy, waddling, exhausted, and when I drop something, I look down at it and try to use the Force to bring it back to hand, because the very thought of stooping way down there exhausts me further.
At least I still look pretty cute, from what I hear.
Third Eye Open
Damn you John, now I have the need to find a friend for my kitty. I was perusing petfinder, and they all look so damn cute. My cat is going to hate me, and I am going to blame you!
Joe Lisboa
I’m callin it Joe’s Sobriety Program.
If I have to wear this stupid beard for another game, I might as well start drinkin’ up and see if that’ll fix the jinx. +2 and awaaaay we go …

Happy, happy news! She looks soooo sweet! I love the banner.
But, ahem, where are the damned pictures??!
John, you are such a tease.
I expect a full album by tomorrow morning.
John Cole
I just sneaked in and checked on her, and she is out cold.
Litlebritdifrnt
@John Cole:
sweet she is settling in, I am guessing she is feeling she is “home” and this is it. That makes my heart swell. Good on ya John.
demkat620
@John Cole: Aw, she feels secure enough to sleep! That’s great news John. Don’t want a worrier. She can relax and sleep;
The rest will come.
Krista
Awww…good-night, sweet little girl. Tomorrow is a brand-new day in your wonderful new life.

Lily in her own little bed, in her new home, with her new besotted Daddy, after the nightmare she’s been through makes me tear up a little bit.
Somewhat OT, though it is about animals: I may have to stop feeding the raccoons hereabouts, after all. Not because they attacked anyone – they didn’t – but because they’ve been using the deck off the spare bedroom as a latrine, which I didn’t notice until today since I rarely go into that room. It was quite a surprise, let me tell you. A really really gross OMG CLEAN IT UP CLEAN IT UP RIGHT NOW OMG I CAN’T I DON’T HAVE A SHOVEL OR ANYTHING surprise.
And, apparently, raccoon crap is apparently a dangerous substance, which ordinary civilians may not shovel up, and which cannot be disposed of in an ordinary dumpster; no, not even if it’s in a plastic garbage bag all tied off and stuff. I had to call a cleaning company that specializes in cleaning up crime scenes to come out and give me an estimate!
God knows how much this will cost me. And I’m not even sure I know a foolproof way to keep the little darlings from continuing to do their business on my deck – hence, the no-more-feeding. Which is a shame, because they’re all nursing mothers, and they just started bringing the kits around (which are of course utterly adorable) and oh god how can I possibly cut off the food supply to mommies and babies….

2-0 Pens!

Damn, is this a hometown series or what! Wow, Pens.
No worries, Wings fans. You gotta love a Game 7!

WooHoo! Little Red Monkey Boy strikes again!
Joe Lisboa
It ain’t over yet. 2-1 Pens, with a Detroit power play coming up. Cheap, cheap cross-check.
John Cole
You know, I am in favor of chippy shit, but that cross-check was dangerous and bullshit. Inexcusable.
Anne Laurie
Not to mention glowing, to go with your natural cuteness!
Your local medical-supplies place should sell “grabbers”, those pincher-on-a-stick things the old-time grocers used to pull boxes off high shelves. People with mobility issues, such as very pregnant ladies, still find them useful when the floor is so… very… faaaar down there.

Well-played, Pens. See you in Detroit.

Congrats to Lily on her new home, sounds like she is settling in well. Update on Katie the kitty, she has gone Galt in a Capri Sun box. I don’t think a picture would do justice. I have been looking for her for an hour! I guess I should be glad I haven’t taken the recycling out yet.
Ked
Now that there was some good playoff hockey. At least Detroit will win the series at home. Better parties all around that way.

@CaseyL:
I can attest that feeding any wild furry creatures, ever, for any reason, always turns out bad. Feed the birds – they’re cheaper, prettier, and less messy. And their shit isn’t a controlled substance.
Violet
@John Cole:
Awww…she feels safe in her new home. That’s wonderful. Glad Tunch behaved himself. Tomorrow is going to be a very exciting day. Can’t wait for pictures.
Ellid
Lily has such a sweet, appealing look to her. My youngest cat, Diamond, was a shelter kitty and had something of the same claustrophilia. Lily will come around.
Also, go Pens!
Notorious P.A.T.
Good luck with Lily!

@CaseyL:
Casey,
Didn’t know Raccoon scat was HAZMAT. What makes it so toxic? Local guys leave occasional deposits as they circumnavigate the garbage cans looking for way in. I shovel it up and rinse off the residue with the hose. I live in rural Western NY and local fauna are part of our life. A joy to watch especially when they bring the babies ’round.
Cheers,
S
CaseyL
S – I agree with you, but Seattle’s Animal Control is freaked out by the stuff. (I know people can be afraid of raccoons because they might have rabies, but what could be so scary about their feces escapes me.) I probably will shovel up most of it tomorrow, wearing gloves and maybe a mask just to be on the safe side, because now that I know it’s there I can’t stand the thought of NOT getting rid of it immediately.
Jager
How many racoons do you have, how much do they shit? How can this be a problem unless you get down on your hands and knees and play with racoon shit on a daily basis.
Hey John, didn’t you say the new pup grew up in house with cats…she could care less about Tunch, of course, that will make him crazy…you’ll begin to notice that dogs and cats enjoy fucking with each other…our old lady Persian is incensed when Straka ignores her, she’ll walk up to him, stare, go eat out of his bowl, jump over him…anything to get his attention, finally he’ll get up lunge at her, she’ll run into the next room, wait until he settles down and then she is back at it…it becomes a daily in-home reality show!

Cole!
Congratulations on the new addition to the family. Every cat I ever had (except one) was a stray. You’re doing a good thing, and you will be repaid a thousand times in love.

Any mammal that eats out of garbage cans is liable to pick up (and pass) an interesting spectrum of parasites, but this may be what your wildlife experts are phreaked about:
Raccoon roundworms
Yeah, I’d wear a mask, and gloves, and clothes I could either discard or run thru a hot-water wash immediately.
Wile E. Quixote
@John Cole
It’s a well known fact of physics that light bends when it travels around massive objects.
Wile E. Quixote
@CaseyL:
The only things you should be feeding urban raccoons are poison and copper jacketed lead. They’re disease carrying vermin, rats with ringed tails and dextrous paws.
CaseyL
Wile & Annie –
I definitely appreciate the information (and, yes, the roundworm freaks me out good and proper), but I should point out that the raccoons that come to my house are probably not as disease-ridden as the raccoons in NYC.
This is north Seattle. We have a greenbelt behind our complex with a stream running through it – a sort of mini wetland – so the raccoons here are more wilderness than urban. A very extended family of them have lived here longer than I have. The ones I’m feeding are 3rd-4th generation locals who’ve been eating kibble put out for them rather than garbage (which is kept in dumpsters and sealed-lid individual garbage cans).
I’m not saying there’s ‘no’ risk, but likely a reduced one. There doesn’t seem to have been a diagnosed case of raccoon roundworm in this area for a very, very long time.
BTW, I’ve always found it interesting that the wild animals which do live among us are, without exception, stigmatized as filthy, disease-ridden creatures better off dead. It makes me wonder if that’s an (unconscious) projection/acknowledgment of how filthy we are – so filthy our cities contaminate every creature who tries to live in them – or an alienation from the natural world so deep that we figure the only wildlife that would consider coming near us has to be diseased and/or crazy.
MazeDancer
Rescue Remedy (the Bach homeopathic/flower essence) really works for calming animals. Truly. This is not a Santa Fe woo-woo theory. I’ve used it often and watched it calm scared critters. Just get some drops on some patch of skin. The spray can go on her bed and just plain in the air. Available at all health food stores. Unfortunately not cheap.
And while you’re there also get a homeopathic remedy called Aconite. It’s the remedy for trauma. Every health food store has a display of the little blue Boiron tubes of remedies. Get 30cc if they have it. It’s just little white pills, easy to stick in her mouth and let dissolve. Start with a few every two or three hours, at least an hour away from eating. Do that for two days. Taper off over a week to once a day, probably for a couple months. She’s really traumatized.
Homeopathy works amazingly well with animals. Do not knock it til you’ve tried it. Many vets use. And if you’ve watched it work, you, too, will become a supporter.
