Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

“woke” is the new caravan.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

Take your GOP plan out of the witness protection program.

American History and Black History Cannot Be Separated

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Everybody saw this coming.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

Good to see Bolton still free of the oppressive chains of Peak Wingnut.

Yeah, send the Israelis to bomb Iran while McCain sings. Paint the bombs green to show your solidarity with the protesters. Could there be any doubt those Iranian protesters would be tossing flowers and candies up toward the liberating Israeli pilots? No doubts for Bolton. Oh, and to show you’ve gone the extra mile in your really smart thinking and planning, make sure the Israelis use their Barak model F-16s.

i can’t think of Brimley without thinking of a scene from Strangers With Candy where they have him (though it was Colbert doing Brimley’s voice) reading a book-on-tape about how dangerous retarded people are:

Wilford Brimley on tape: Hi. This is Wilford Brimley. Welcome to ‘Retardation: A Celebration.’ Now, hopefully with this book, I’m gonna dispel a few myths, a few rumors. First off, the retarded don’t rule the night. They don’t rule it – nobody does. And they don’t run in packs. And while they may not be as strong as apes, don’t lock eyes with ‘em, don’t do it. Puts ‘em on edge. They might go into berserker mode, come at you like a whirling dervish, all fists and elbows. You might be screaming, ‘No, no, no,’ – all they hear is, ‘Who wants cake?’ Let me tell you something: They all do. They all want cake. Well, that’s it for the celebration. I guess the most important thing to remember is, they’re just like you and me.

every time we hear Brimley now, my wife and I say “They all want cake”, or “the diuhbeetuhs”

I don’t know, but I’m pretty sure you get “Bonus Buffoon Points” if you not only have a mustache, but somehow manage to follow the example of basketball coach Rick Adelman and wear it and comb your hair in a manner that makes you look a whole lot like Adolph Hitler.

Now this may be a sexist remark, but isn’t one of the reasons guys get married is to have someone TELL them when there is something seriously off-putting in their appearance, as in, “Dear, why don’t you shave off that mustache? I don’t think the ‘Adolph Hitler’ look gives off the right type of impression”.

Is there anyone in public life with a mustache who isn’t a buffoon?

    No.

But a buffoon in the booth with Gary and Ron.

    @DZ:

Did you read the Counterpunch column http://www.counterpunch.org/navarro12062003.html I cited in a previous posting? I don’t have the citations at my fingertips, but I have read elsewhere that Dali had fascist sympathies.

Even allowing for a charitable benefit of the doubt on behalf of Dali which you put forward, I cannot give him a pass for refusing to condemn fascism.

Other people with mustaches who are not buffoons

    John Cleese and Johnny Depp

@DougJ: I could care less who is your favorite columnist.

I reiterate, Krugman has been objectively right far more often than his detractors.

His timely insights caused me to take actions that saved 25% of the value of my 401K. That’s almost $100K.

Think you can say the same?

@JK: I disagree with the other guys. Neocons think too tactically to have anything in common with Naderites. In terms of ideological rigidity and tactical brilliance I think of them as falling somewhere between Lyndon Larouchies and the Religious Right.

    Bryan Cranston.

Speaking of Wilford Brimley my favorite scene in The Firm is the fight scene between Tom Cruise and Wilford Brimley where Tom Cruise kicks his ass. Every time I watch that movie I start yelling “Yeah Tom Cruise! You go and kick Wilford Brimley’s diabetic ass. Go on, fuck him up! Fuck him up real bad!”

If kicking the shit out of a portly, out of shape elderly diabetic isn’t the pinnacle of cinematic fight scene manliness then I’d like to know exactly what is.

If Obama grew a ‘stache it would up the Scary Negro quotent x 100 – that would rule!

Yeah, but what would give him a bigger SNQ (Scary Negro Quotient)? A full stache and beard with a big fro? A neatly trimmed mustache and goatee and big fro or a neatly trimmed mustache and goatee with a shaven head (think Samuel L. Jackson)?

Oh, and other non buffoonish stache possessors, Morgan Freeman, Tavis Smiley, Romany Malco, Ron Perlman, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Omar Epps.

And while it’s not the mustache that makes Josh Bolton a buffoon, how could you have that and not be? When I read the question, and had not clicked on the link, the first image that flashed before me was of Josh Bolton. He has the Geraldo special, and who would want to remind people of Geraldo, or even be recklessly indifferent to the risk, without being himself a buffoon of Geraldic dimensions?

In fairness to Bolton, I think trying to fend off Pamela Geller’s advances would drive any man insane. And if he didn’t try to fend them off, the result would be even worse.

I tell you, the man has suffered enough.
