May Pittsburgh be remembered for Yearly Kos and, hopefully, not for this other convention. Thanks to everyone who sent email reminders. Really, thanks guys.

It was a great idea to ask everyone not to think of a white elephant. Let’s try another tack: your preferred operating system sucks. Discuss.
Just Some Fuckhead
Those furry fuckers give me the heebie-jeebies.
robertdsc
Sometimes I wish the President and some Dems would do some bare-knuckle fighting against the Republicans. Smooth operator stuff is fine, I suppose, but once in a while, I’d like to see a baseball bat beat down.
Just Some Fuckhead
I’m pretty sure elephants don’t have fur.
demkat620
@Just Some Fuckhead: Oh me too!
I must have been totally naive because I only found out about this…proclivity about 5 years ago. I had no idea there were people who did this.
And since this is an open thread, Harold Ford is an asshat.
One Quinnipiac poll of Ohio is not an indicator to give up on healthcare.
Has he always been this stupid or is it just being a Democrat from TN?
Crashman06
Thinking about a bunch of confused, slightly frightened professional baseball players being stuck in the same hotel as a furry convention makes me laugh.
dmsilev
Per the discussion two threads down, how about a change of pace to “your camera sucks; mine is great”. Nikon vs Canon vs Olympus vs Pentax etc. etc. has been raging for far longer than a whippernapper flame war over preferred OSes
Or, we could have a nice vi vs. emacs discussion. That’d be fun

Woodrowfan
are their furries that dress up like, I dunno, cute JRT puppies? cause that’d be WEIRD.
Colette
I’m not thinking of white elephants. I’m thinking of pink hippos. In tutus. Dancing. Hippos do not have fur, and are therefore a safe topic for contemplation.
SpotWeld
Personally I had a blast at AC this year.
Great view of the fireworks from the convention center.

@Woodrowfan:
Its a ‘movement’ whose growth was spurred by the interwebs, meaning, if it has fur on it, someones into it, literally. :-0

I haven’t seen this posted here yet. A private swim club in Philadelphia says “black kids can’t swim here.”

Stop judging.

@NR:
Un-fucking-believable. Yet, sadly, totally believable.
I hope some empty, bigoted heads roll.
demkat620
@NR: Northeast Philly fuckers. Bunch of crackerheads up there. They are the ones who wanted to secede from Philadelphia because their money was being used in the city.
I hope the kids parents sue the water right out of that pool.

Just installed eeebuntu 3.0 on my ASUS 900. Its slick and reminds me of OS X. I am still trying to figure out which versions of FF updates I need, but on the whole, as a internet and word comp. it works pretty darn well.

Just swum up into my consciousness that John, in an earlier post, mentioned that he was tying up tomato plants.
Which varieties are you growing Mr. Cole? And are they doing any better than my pitiful specimens, here in NJ?

@dmsilev:
My camera must suck, when I got broken into last month they took my broken cheapo digital, and my partners cheapo digital. But they left my 35mm SLR with multiple lenses, filters and other goodies.
Criminals these days, they have no taste.
Oh, Canon.
demimondian
Hey, BrewerJuicers — the eldest wants to make mead with me. I’ve never made it — I’m assuming one treats it as a super-high-initial gravity ale, but…heck if I have any better idea than that.
Suggestions?
demimondian
@Third Eye Open: Ewww-bun-tu is icky.

Nikon FTW
Linkmeister
@Evinfuilt: That an AE-1? I’ve got an A-1, myself. (Also an old Petri, but it was superceded by the Canon.)

Mead takes a ton of honey, and the fermentation takes for-fucking-ever. Also. If you can spare an extra secondary vessel and you or he have the patience to wait, goferit.

Was GeoWorks ever really an OS?
demimondian
@Tim F.: I was thinking about starting with a metheglin — we’ve got an awesome local home-brew/win-making shop, and I *think* I can get a batch of Muscatel there. I’m thinking Pasteur Champaign as a culture.
Secondary vessels aren’t an issue. :) I have a lot of those, but thanks for pointing it out to me.

It does what I need it to so far, I will keep you updated on its icky-ness factor going forward.

I know I was told not to talk about this, but I clicked through to the original article and found this tidbit.
Seriously?
You expect me not to talk about this?
Seriously?
John, comment?

It’s called Netroot Nations, not Yearly Kos. Just fyi. Cheers.

I feel for them, I really do. I am reminded of the time, on a business trip to Connecticut, that I got stuck for a week in the same hotel as a convention of Christian Clowns.
Literally. I’m not name calling here. They were clowns. Clowns, that just happen to be Christian. Family friendly fundamentalist Christian entertainment. That was their profession. And they have conventions. And… oh, the horror.

Remember there was some wingnut who was discovered to be a furry?
I wonder if he was there.

Well, my computer uses an operating system written by furries…

My eeePC has Xandros Linux, but I can’t really figure out how to keep it updated and add programs, so I just use it to surf. My Imac is the bomb. Gave up on Windoz a few years ago. Great O/S if you have the time and expertise to keep it running. I just wanted a computer to work and be stable, not to have to play PC support in all my off time.
Enjoy.

Are you fucking kidding me? This has got to be a spoof, this is 2009 for gawds sake! This still goes on in the US? I am fucking floored, I mean really, fucking floored.

Hating on furries is so 2003.
If you bothered to learn the first thing about a group before deciding that it was fit for public condemnation, you’d know that furries were perfectly nice people undeserving of your scorn.
They aren’t zoophiles. They’re mostly people who like and identify with animals a lot. Someone who posts photos of his cats and dogs as often as you do ought to appreciate that.
SpotWeld
@Jon H
Yes he was, and he was a normally well mannered convention attendee, as are most bloggers of all stripes when off line and there are no cameras on the,
Nethead Jay
@Anonymouse: What you said. Seriously Tim, dissing furries is not cool. I’ve hung around science-fiction fandom for many years now and know several people who are also seen in furry circles. There are cool people going to Anthrocon, so stop hating.
Also,
Awww, what did Emacs ever do to you ;D

Anonymouse
(Missed that this was not in fact the cat/dog-posting-maniac host (which activity I entirely approve of, BTW), so apologies for that confusion. But I still think the commonly-held idea that furries are “fair game” – cause you know, they’re weird and nobody likes them – is mistaken and unfair. It’s not your thing, okay. It’s not really my thing either, though I get it. But it’s not much weirder than model railway fans or Civil War re-enactors. In fact given the popularity of anthropomorphic animals in general (hellooo Disney), it’s probably less weird.)
Catsy
Look, I get it. I mean, for more than 15 years I’ve gone by the nickname “Catsy”. I even played on FurryMUCK for a short time, back when Internet in a Box was revolutionary. I get it. Your kink is fine–over there.
But people who self-identify as furries and have been on the Internet longer than a month really should have more sense than to expect not to be laughed at, and skin thick enough to take a mild ribbing. You belong to a subculture that is inherently, intrinsically goofy. Anonymouse has a point when s/he points out that anthropomorphic animals (e.g. Disney) are quite common in popular culture. But they’re common in kids’ cartoons and ads for breakfast cereal, and we laugh at them too. We’re supposed to!
Glocksman
@dmsilev:
My Konica outfit kicked some Nikon ass back in the day. :)
More seriously, I look upon the ‘furries’ as harmless as long as only consenting adults are involved.
Unlike wingnuts, whose activities are anything but harmless.
Hell, given a choice of neighbors between a ‘furry’ couple and a born again Christofascist couple, who would you choose?
I’ll take the honest deviant over the hypocritical moralizer any day during the week and twice on Sunday.
grendelkhan
@Anonymouse: Indeed. As it stands, I’d feel better about defending them if the fursecution complex wasn’t so deeply embedded in the subculture, but even considering that, it’s just making fun of folks because they’re different, or weird. It’s a cheap laugh to promote in-group cohesion by excluding the out-group.
Shame on you people. Really.

“Remember there was some wingnut who was discovered to be a furry?”
Cigarskunk.
Good times.

Oh bah. Wish I’d spotted this sooner. I was there and had fun, though I was working Artist’s Alley the whole time. It’s a pretty insane con all things considered- lots of the best and the worst of furrydom, believe me. The stories I could tell…
I did a comic on the subject :)
http://www.tallyroad.com/rk/roadkitties-22.html
The funniest part was, the first panel and the ‘Keep away from me’ were literally on ESPN, for reals :)
Well, I thought it was hysterical, but I laugh at fursecution instead of throwing hissy fits…
