Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.”

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

“Alexa, change the president.”

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

When they say they are pro-life, they do not mean yours.

Reality always gets a vote in the end.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

Many life forms that would benefit from greater intelligence, sadly, do not have it.

We can show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

Also, are you sure you want people to rate your comments?

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

It’s the corruption, stupid.

Humiliatingly small and eclipsed by the derision of millions.

Innocent people do not delay justice.

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

Republican speaker of the house Mike Johnson is the bland and smiling face of evil.

I really should read my own blog.

“woke” is the new caravan.

A norm that restrains only one side really is not a norm – it is a trap.

The willow is too close to the house.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

This stinks. Hilzoy is hanging up the keyboard.

One of the nicest and most genuine people on the whole internet.

My hope is that she will take a break and then when the blogging bug bites again she’ll return. Alas, the blogosphere is indeed losing one of its clearest thinkers and better writers.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO – well I do think that she’ll be back when she realizes that yes, a large percentage of the country is still insane, or when Jeff Sessions makes some idiotic comment on the Tee Vee.

She’ll be back. There is no way somebody that good is going to hang it up forevah.
Anybody watching Morning Ho with Lizzie Cheney? Lizzie needs as assist from Dan Senor dealing with Eugene Robinson. Lizzie is going the Sarah Palin route of the a la carte menu on why her daddy decided not to brief Congress. These people just obfuscate to the point where you want to scream.

    @mai naem:

Thanks for watching so I don’t have to. I have unfurrowed my brow and unclenched my fists since I gave up hoping that Mika would exhibit some evidence of having learned something from her father, and stopped watching.

Hilzoy will be back. She’ll see that no one is making the point that needs to be made, and duty will call.

    Damn. Is there a “Bare-Faced Please-Don’t-Go-Away Bird”?

Hilzoy cites a lessening of crazy invective as her reason for backing off the blogging.
    a) Not sure I agree with that;
    b) I kind of hope it gets a little crazy again, if only to nudge her back into writing.

your title is perfect, john (as always).
it captures the way that hilzoy has always sounded like a member of a distinct, benign, hyper-intelligent race.

dolphin, alien, angel, not clear. but certainly not just another human being.

human beings don’t have that constant clarity, that dispassionate compassion, that ruthless commitment to evenhanded fairness, all warmed by a genuine concern for the world.

i have no idea what’s really behind her keyboard, but i guess i’ve always thought it was some kind of angel.
with occasional anecdotes about her waitressing in biker-bars to throw us off the scent.

still, it could also be a dolphin, who didn’t want to get stuck blogging about dolphin-advocacy issues.

anyhow, we were damned lucky to have her on the internets. hope she comes back some day.

Hilzoy’s not only one of the best bloggers out here in the ether, but she’d also be one of my top two or three choices that I’d like to see on a major op-ed page. I think she’s got a great ‘voice,’ and would do well in a format like that.

So I’m very sorry to see her hang up the blogging, and I hope that she resumes after a healthy break.

I wish her well. I really enjoy her work.

A question for the others here. Some where along the way I saw that her last name is Bok and she had said something, like her father was a law prof. or at Harvard, which made me wonder if her father is Derek Bok (whom I seem to recall was a law prof at and pres. of Harvard), who wrote one of my law school text books. Does anyone happen to know?

I believe that is correct. She is one voice that I am going to really miss. Everytime I read some wingnut stupidity and thought my brain was going explode she always had something to say that felt like cooling waters flowing thru my skull. Always calmed me down.

Her ostensible reason for stopping — that “the madness has ended” — has me shaking my head. In what alternative universe is THAT the case?

I don’t give a fart if she quits or not. I just think papering over the fact of useless Obama, the Great Wall Street Raid, unbounded corruption, the unwinding of the world economy, endless war, environmental ignorance, and the obvious rise of fascist nut-job hate speech by the allegedly legitimate opposition party is tra-la-la GOOFY.

Quit if you must, but don’t insult my intelligence in the process.

    @Michael D:

I only recently became familiar with her, but every time I read something by her, I wish that I thought and wrote like that. And if that doesn’t signal quality of mind, I don’t know what does.

I know budgets are tight these days, but you’d think that an old media newspaper or even a newer media news organization would want someone like her to do a column once or twice a week. Yes, budgets are tight, but she’d probably command a smaller salary that someone who has been doing commentary for a long time. Plus, the increase in credibility would almost certainly be worth more than whatever they pay her.

Hilzoy is right. There has never been a golden era of US politics when things were much better than they are now. The madness and stupidity and venality have always been with us. Go read Perlstein’s Gathering Storm for a good example of how freaking nuts it was back during an era (the late 1950s and early 1960s) that is now bathed in a golden glow of nostalgia.

How it is today, this is as good as it gets. These are the “good old days” that you will tell your children and grandchildren about. And compared with the collective madness of 2002-2006, I’ll take it.

I greatly admire and respect Hilzoy’s work. Her entries were thoughtful, measured, and well-researched. I wish she wouldn’t resign, but I can respect her desire to hang it up. Good luck, Hilzoy, and thank you for being one of the best bloggers in the blogosphere.

P.S. I took her post to mean that the mass hysteria of ‘why do you hate America?’ is on the wane as the reason for resigning now–not that politics/politicians are any less crazy or messed up.
