Jeez, here’s one of the eeriest sagas I’ve seen in a long time: The Observer‘s account of what’s gone down in Romania from Christmas Day 1989 onward. As one of the Ceausescus’ executioners describes their 1-minute-44-second “trial” and double execution, others lay out how the whole thing — that and everything else that’s happened in Romania since — was a ruse.

I woke up this morning to realize that it’s T-minus 48 hours before my mother arrives for a week long visit.
I don’t know what it is with mothers and daughters, but I find it impossible to spend any length of time with her and not get into a fight.
I once again am making a vow to myself to rise above it and if she says something that pushes my buttons, I’m going to take the high road. The over/under is three days before I crack.
Very interesting CBS Sunday Morning. If anything, it made me sad… Walter Cronkite outlived journalism for at least ten years.
Can anyone imagine Cronkite sucking up to a fat radio blowhard like Rush Limbaugh, the way Brian Williams seems perfectly comfortable with doing? Or writing a Jake Tapper or David Gregory-esque letter to Mark Sanford’s staff, groveling for an interview and promising a “friendly” environment?
That idiot Sanford’s got another800-word “apology” in The State today — but the comments are a LOT more amusing than he (or his Family ghostwriter?) is.

Max: I can relate. Three days would have been a record for me. My mom and I had a terrible time seeing eye to eye on anything and nothing I ever did was good enough. Don’t get me wrong, we loved each other and never abused each other unnecessarily (though we did a lot of shouting at each other). @geg6: I dig. I have actually said to her at one point “maybe we’re just not meant to be close”.
My parents divorced when I was 2 and at 9, I went to go live with my dad and stepmom. I am a daddy’s girl and when he died 1-1/2 years ago, my stepmom took over his role. She’s my go-to person, and now my favorite parent. My mother seems more comfortable projecting onto me the person she thinks I am, rather than taking the time to learn about the person I actually am.
I’m 38 years old and I know I should be able to just appreciate the time I have with her, especially after losing my dad last year. But, I’d be lying if I said I don’t drive a little faster than normal when taking her to the airport for her return home flight.
I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who struggles(d) with their relationship with their mother.

Okay, since John brought up the subject of dying plants- a help question. I attempted to root two cuttings of a miniature orange tree, but wasn’t able to keep the leaves moist enough during the rooting and they’re all dead and dried out- except that, when I tug on the one twig I get resistance so I’m wondering if there are roots growing down there (the soil has been kept moist). What do I do? If there are roots, will I eventually see a new stem? Or should I just pitch it all out? Anyone have any ideas?
@Max:
I once had a keyboard where the “w” key didn’t work. It really pissed me off. I would pound on the damned key like a maniac and nothing would happen and I would get madder and madder. The computer would just sit there displaying about as much reactivity as a bag of Portland cement.
Lesson in life there. If someone pushes a button and that button is disconnected, then the button pusher gets all out of whack. The button pushee remains calm and at peace, because the button is disconnected and the button-push signal is not reaching.
So don’t try to make others quit pusing your buttons. Disconnect your buttons and let them push away. Then laugh as they freak out when they aren’t getting the reaction they expect.

Max: There’s a lot like us, I bet. Hell, I’m over 50, she’s been gone 8 years, and I still have mommy issues. And I, too, was a daddy’s girl although not a child of divorce. Daddy was my hero and I was very close with him. That right there may have been the source of the problem.
It may be just me, although I doubt it, but there is something about the expression, “going Galt”, that makes me think of leather chaps. Sort of like ‘going commando’, but for Republicans.
Or should I take up my sister’s offer to drive the 15 miles to her place in order to sit on her deck in the sun, meet her new squeeze, and drink her beer and eat the homemade pizza, homegrown salad and linguini with fresh pesto that she is making? Decisions, decisions.
I would think that free food wins every time. Although I think that pizza is best left to the professionals, but that’s just me.
It’s weird and hard to explain, especially because those who have known both of us say we are so much alike.
Hmmm. This could be part of the heart of things. Sometimes people don’t like to have to compete with versions of themselves.
…she’s been gone 8 years, and I still have mommy issues. And I, too, was a daddy’s girl although not a child of divorce. Daddy was my hero and I was very close with him. That right there may have been the source of the problem.
And yet, your mom and dad chose each other. Do you know any of the things that they liked about each other?
By the way, a friend of mine thought she was a lot like her mother, and believed that she was supposed to identify with her mother, in part because of a sense of sisterhood and feminist solidarity (she has a big old political streak). And yet in a lot of her behavior, attitudes, ambition, and world view, she was just like her dad. I still think this is funny.
re orange twig: if it really feels like it might have started rooting, keep watering and lightly/weakly feeding, keep it in a warm sunny place. If it gets cold at night you can make a mini-greenhouse for it with a 2 litre pop bottle with the bottom cut off. Be patient, give it 3 or 4 months to show any new growth.
@Max: I hear you. In ten days, my mom is coming for her annual visit. We get along very well except for four or five well-established issues. Every time, I vow not to get into it with her, and every time, I find myself getting into it with her. Good luck!
@geg6: I just saw this.
I hope you went, though I totally understand your need to not change plans. If I plan something, then I really, really, really, really don’t want to change it. There had better be a good reason for me to change my plans, and pizza would be one of those reasons (beer, not so much). Have fun!
Me, I’m going to my best friend’s house and watch her daughter put on a puppet show in the driveway.

@Max: @geg6: Oh yes, there are plenty of us daughters with mother issues. After years of being the “good” child (spent time with her, helped her with stuff) after my father died, I reached a wall with it and all my tolerance seemed to dissipate. Things became worse when a few months ago my mother and I had a furious argument when she said that Sarah Palin “is a breath of fresh air”. I know better than to discuss politics with her – she LOVED W. This is terrible, but I honestly felt she was incapable of rational thought after that point.

Tomato plants killed themselves
We’ve had an epidemic of late blight here in the NE. Is it in your neck of the woods?
From tomato plants mainly sold from ‘big box’ stores. I was never so glad that I grew my own plants from seed this year. (Mainly cause I’m cheap.)
So two of my potted tomato plants on the balcony killed themselves.
Hope it was not as serious as this tomato fungus:
ITHACA, N.Y., July 17 (UPI) — Major crop loss may result from an “explosive” fungus that destroys tomato plants and is rampant in the Northeast, federal agriculture officials said Friday. Late blight, a highly contagious fungus, can jump from tomato to potato plants and caused the Irish potato famine in the 19th century. Its spores are common in soil and small outbreaks are familiar to farmers, but the cool, wet weather in June added to the aggression of the pathogen, Martin A. Draper, a senior plant pathologist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture told The New York Times.
Are we allowed to pimp here? Either way, I’m asking for forgiveness in advance. I don’t know about CBS News or any other kind, but everybody needsthis picture, especially if yer stuck in front of the teevee!
Do not — I stress, do NOT — have anything in your mouth when you click…

Demo Woman
@John Cole: I looked out my kitchen window and saw a squirrel running off with one of my tomatoes. It encouraged me to take my basket and pick the ripe ones before they all disappeared.
If the plantt still has live roots, it’s not yet dead. Wait a few weeks and see if new shoots appear. Wait a month after it regains its health before you fertilize it.

I’m so proud of my son today,I had to tell someone.
He’s autistic(Asperger’s),and for years he’s been scared of my husband’s Harley. I think it’s the noise and vibration more than anything,even though he listens to metal music and likes concerts. The poor kid didn’t sleep a wink last night he was so scared and nervous about today.
Anyhow,today he got on the bike and went with my husband to the movies and then up to N.GA for the afternoon. I know it’s not a big thing,but really,it’s HUGE for him to do this. He’s 15 and so much shit has been thrown his way,he never ceases to amaze me with how brave he is. Two weeks ago he learned to drive the riding mower,another big deal for him. He’s come a long way from that little boy who couldn’t talk or be around crowds of people or in big buildings.
Anyhoo,I’m just all choked up,this is BIG milestone in our house. Yay!

Thanks for the plant advice, everyone- it’d be neat if the thing makes it. It’s from a 65-year-old (at least) mini orange tree that belonged to my great aunt. My aunt, who inherited the tree, gave me a baby tree that sprouted from one of the tree’s pips, but I read somewhere that those often turn out to be full-size orange trees, so I’m a little concerned that the ever-growing green plant in my ap’t may turn out to be a monster. So we decided to see if we could get some cuttings to root from the old tree (apparently trees from cuttings can bear fruit in just a few years. And they stay small!).

@Max: I hear you. In ten days, my mom is coming for her annual visit. We get along very well except for four or five well-established issues. Every time, I vow not to get into it with her, and every time, I find myself getting into it with her. Good luck!

@geg6: I just saw this.

@John Cole:

I don’t know about CBS News or any other kind, but everybody needs this picture, especially if yer stuck in front of the teevee!
Do not — I stress, do NOT — have anything in your mouth when you click…

Yay!

@A Mom Anon: Aw, that’s so sweet and wonderful! Here’s hoping for many more such moments in the future. Big ups to your son and your hubby, too.

@A Mom Anon: That must feel incredible. I applaud you and your husband.

That’s phenomenal! And it IS a big thing — for someone with Asperger’s to get outside of their comfort zone like that, it requires an unfathomable amount of bravery. Good for him, and good for you!

Well, adding a Newfie *might* be one way to discourage the woodchucks… briefly. Srlsy, they’re great dogs (assuming you have the room for them) and I look forward to hearing more.
A Mom Anon: Big props to your son for going so far outside his comfort zone, and to his parents for giving him the time & tools to do so!
