Yes and yes. Firefox 3.5.1, WinXP

The whole internet’s been acting wonkie and I was thinking until lately that it’s just my spotty internet connection. But it’s a consistent 54 mbps through Netgear. Now I’m starting to think it could be something more pernicious.
By the way, even though I’ve personally thanked everyone who’d done so, I’d still like to thank everyone who helped me yesterday with my crisis. My fiancée and I deeply appreciate the kind and generous gestures (although we’re not so appreciative of John “Garbo” Aravosis banning me from ABlog). We’re not out of the woods yet but at least we won’t have to worry about paying the rent and going hungry for the immediate future.

Even commenting and getting a cookie, is not fixing the site today. I am using windows XP professional and Firefox.
Bob In Pacifica
That sounds like a line from a song.
“I’m still acting funky/
and I don’t know why.”

It’s been fine for me the last few days, but as of now, via Firefox 3.5.1/Windows XP, the last two posts look pretty normal, the ones before that are spread all over the place.

and now I notice the “edit” option for comments isn’t coming up
Cat Lady
This post on my Vista/Explorer laptop is back to normal, but the open thread has been subjected to an old testament god-like thrashing. I hope preview and edit come back from going galt.
Daily cookie request completed.
That is all.
PeakVT
I’m getting everything but the snark. And the pet pics.
Earlier I was getting wiiiiiiiide comments, so something has improved.
lotus
Interesting: the previous post is the only one that showed me the mess everybody else has been describing, but now this one is back to normal.
Go figure.
D0n Camillo
I’ll just grab a cookie while I wait for this to get sorted. At least we can get to the site, unlike last Summer.
Punchy
I’m fine on IE8, bitches. Jus gimmie my goddamn buttons and I’ll shut the pie hole for awhile.
dmsilev
Seems OK right now (Mac, running Safari 4), but the previous Open Thread was all screwed up.

Comrade Mary
Guys, the Edit function was deliberately yanked after the spyware scare last week. It’s not a new issue.
I’m still on Firefox 3.0 instead of 3.5 and everything looks great right now. Maybe there is something about 3.5 that isn’t playing nice with the template?
EnderWiggin
The site is a train wreck on my Iphone. This makes me sad. Time to WordPress it?
Comrade Mary
(And yeah,. there’s something wrong with that old open thread, but it’s been yanked, too, so everything is currently spiffy for me.)
So here’s some content: Orly Taitz on the Colbert report last night.
YouTube
You should also be able to find it on the Comedy Central or Comedy Network sites.
Jean
Looks normal to me on Safari.
Demo Woman
The site was working fine before Lily appeared. I blame Tunch.
GReynoldsCT00
I have both IE and Firefox on my office PC, I just looked the site via IE and it looked even worse that Firefox earlier.
Now that I’ve returned via Firefox, it looks better than a few minutes ago
Rook
At least your site is accessing the CSS instead of going to the bland, basic rendering with no style.
Brian Leon
First of all, if you look at Firefox’s error console you will see this:
Error: The stylesheet https://balloon-juice.com/wp-content/themes/balloon-juice/style.css was not loaded because its MIME type, “text/html”, is not “text/css”.
Source File: https://balloon-juice.com/?p=24687#comments
Line: 0
Fix that and the site’s look will be restored
Also, there seems to be some problem with the google-analytics plugins:
Error: y is undefined
Source File: http://www.google-analytics.com/ga.js
Line: 36
Comrade Darkness
John,
So, for the first time I saw it broken and took a look with the CSS inspector on the Web Developer extension in Firefox. For reasons unknown, it was closing out the div for .narrowcolumn at the end of the post just before “History in the Making”
I was going to say, maybe try zap gremlins on the post before that to look for garbage invisible characters.
Ah, and I see you have pulled that post that was in there and indeed, it is a happy camper.
For zapping gremlins I generally use the command of that name in bbedit. Always works for me.
mak
Normal at work on XP/Firefox (the elder);
At home, CHAOS-NO MARGINS on Vista/Firefox the newer.
Demo Woman
@Comrade Mary: It would be better if the birthers had a natural born citizen represent their side. Orly Taitz could be working for Putin for all we know.
Comrade Darkness
HAH, I found it.
In your embedded movie post you had… dang this is going to be hard to describe with the angle eating monster on here…
You had this extra on the movie you just posted:
[p][/div][/p]
(imagine angles here)
that was closing the “narrowcolumn” div and leaving the rest of the posts to fend for themselves without the benefit of the margins.

Getting the cookie on another machine….
shannon
I want a cookie.

The broken formatting may be boring, but it makes BJ much safer for work. I’m using IE and Windows XP (both at home and at work). Format broken everytime I sign on. We’ll see if this comment fixes it…
PS: I really miss the automatic formatting buttons that used to be above the comment window. Any chance those will ever come back?
joes527
@Comrade Mary: OK. Yes, that woman is seriously insane, but at some level she must have some brain. She was able to get a mail order law degree. She is certified to pull teeth. I think she can even sell a house.
What exactly did she think was going to happen on Colbert?
Gordon, The Big Express Engine
@Comrade Darkness: I read this comment and all I heard is what the kids in Peanuts hear when a teacher speaks!
dmsilev
@Comrade Mary: Someone needs to ask Orly Taitz why she’s so obsessed with Obama’s birth certificate, given that she flat-out stated that even if he was born in Hawaii, he’s not eligible to be President due to the non-American-citizenship of his father (which is nonsense of course, but whatever).
If she believes the birth certificate is irrelevant, why is she pursuing it with Ahab-like intensity?
Her answer would be amusing. It wouldn’t have anything to do with the real answer (“I hate Obama, therefore he is not a legitimate President”), but it’d be amusing.

oh really
Windows XP and Firefox 3.0.12.
The site keeps changing for me.
Right now it seems almost OK.* A few hours ago, it was
virtuallyunusable.*I just noticed I’m not getting a “preview” below the comment box.
Good luck.

Fix for funky look
Bostondreams
@dmsilev:
But I can understand her fears. After all, the last illegal President, Chester A. Arthur, was a living nightmare, a dark time in American history. Why, as Colbert suggested, it could be the return of…muttonchops! The horror!
sheba
Still weird here, FWIW. XP, IE7.
Leelee for Obama
John, I can see everything fine on FF3.5 on WinXP, but to get things to move along, I turn off Java Script on this site. It was funky earlier with JS on and I had to leave for something so I didn’t try the turning off thing. Hope things are better soon, I need you guys for my sanity upload!
Tsulagi
Still looks fine for me using Firefox 3.0.12.
Just opened the site using IE and it’s good too. See a shitload more of your ads with it.
One of them says “PROTECT YOUR COMPUTER, Get a Jerkstopper Power Cable Retention kit.” Maybe that jerkstopper retention kit is what you need. Also an ad for Pet Media. Fits. What happened to the ad with a babe asking if you want to get horny, or something like that?
dmsilev
@Bostondreams:
Clearly, if Obama starts to grow out his facial hair, we’ll know that the apocalypse is near.
I would suggest that he go with a goatee instead of muttonchops. Much more suited for the Antichrist.

Gordon, The Big Express Engine
Everything works fine as always except for no buttons (just the tag refs) and no edit. IE 6.0
Also when I comment, I get a 403 Error where I get a key reference (always the same one) and john’s email address. If I hit back on the browser, the comment appears like as if I submitted the comment normally. Someone else said this yesterday. This problem long predates the current round of problems (by months at least) and I have been ignoring it since my comments always made it in.
jacy
Every once in a while the site goes funky for me, but if I back out and return, it’s fine. The Atlantic blogging site does the same thing every once in a while. I just treat it like a hiccup.
BTW – one the way now to pick up the newest member of our family. John’s Lily has inspired us to make a little room around here for another shelter dog. He’s a Boston terrier mix who was dumped out on the highway. He had a lacerated cornea and needed to be neutered, so he’s spent two days at the vet’s. He probably doesn’t realize he’s won the dog lottery.
In the time I’ve spent with him, he’s seemed very sweet and mild-mannered, but now we’ll see how he reacts to sharing a house with a neurotic cattle dog, a lab mix who thinks he’s a lap dog, and Spike the Wonder Cat.
Wish me luck!

Started up this morning a little weird with a layout not seen. But clicked on a thread and came up hunky dori.
And yes, I saw the original post. No need to apologize. The pay ain’t good enough for that.
Morbo
It seems fine now on XP and Opera 9.64. I sure hope Glenn Reynolds doesn’t see the ad I see right now for whatever “Regenabots made us immortal” links to.
El Tiburon
The site is still acting funky and we don’t know why.
Put that to a funky backbeat and some funky beats and you got a hit.
Tsulagi
Jesus, see you had a Site Problems post with almost 600 comments.
I’ve been fine; it’s probably been karma for y’all. Constantly bitching about poor Pam with her watermelon bolt-ons. The third arm has been working.
The Saff
The site looks normal on my PC now.
Good luck, jacy, with your new family member! You’re a good soul for adopting him.
Trinity
OT – Anyone see Malkin on The Today show this morning? (http://mediamatters.org/mmtv/200907290007) Wowsers. I just can’t believe they even booked her.
Punchy
Here’s something: this site acts normal, no probs. But every time I try to shut my ESPN window, it shuts down all the windows. It exits me from every browser window.

Oh eww. She’s got another book out?
She seriously cannot stop oozing hatred, she manages for maybe 10 seconds tops and then her voice and facial expressions reveal who she really is. Ugly goes clear to the bone.

Same as yesterday, FF error console points out its a simple Mime type problem for the css file, should be very simple to fix…

Caught it, and just about drop-kicked my teevee straight through the window. We’re not watching The Today Show. As in, ever again. The producers can go fuck themselves for inviting her on in front of millions of people.

Only a human sacrifice will appease the Intratoobz godz.
I vote that we sacrifice Max Baucus.

What a lovely dog – I’m a sucker for ACDs.
Having owned a string of cattle dogs, I do realize that “neurotic cattle dog” is redundant.

what a moran. i can’t believe they let her on TV, much less the Today show.
site seems back to normal, unlike idiots like Michelle Malkin.

Since the other thread got shitcanned, I’ll repost this here.
It’s too bad DougJ couldn’t regale us with a WaPo chat thread yesterday, because Ben Pershing dropped a beauty when asked why the corporate media sank its teeth into some half-assed conspiracy theories but ignored others:
There are no words.

I haven’t had any problems with FF3.5.1 on Vista. One thing people should try is SHIFT-CONTROL-R which not only reloads a page but also reloads parts of that page that could have been cached in a funky state and cause problems to persist.
I’m also running the extension Adblock Plus and I noticed that I haven’t disabled it for the Juice. If funky behavior is being caused by some adverts then maybe this explains why I havn’t seen them.

Possibly a bug in WP-Super-Cache. See: http://ocaoimh.ie/wp-super-cache-062/

Did you upgrade to the newest version of WordPress? Because when I upgraded it caused serious issues with my admin tools and site formatting, so I had to reinstall WordPress 2.7.

Trying the old “post a comment to fix the site formatting” hack (it worked at home yesterday with IE8, trying it at work with IE7).

Trying comments on another laptop to see if it will fix the issue. Still using Safari 4.0.2.
cfaller96
John, have you tried waterboarding or body-slamming the website? My government told me that’s the best way to get cooperation.
oscarbob
Need a work cookie.
monkeyboy
A repeat. If you are ‘getting’ a bad version of
https://balloon-juice.com/wp-content/themes/balloon-juice/style.css
it may be that it is coming from a cached version on your machine. You need to clear your browsers cache OR do something like CONTROL-SHIFT-R which will re-load hopefuly a good version of style.css.
MazeDancer
Same Mac, many days:
Latest Firefox, no formatting
Latest Safari, looks fine
Thanks for posting work happening.
Interesting Safari seems to succeed.

Ooh, posting a comment does make Firefox happy. But it won’t allow editing to put this in last post.

Yes. Still a problem. Cookies good.
