Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

I have other things to bitch about but those will have to wait.

Every decision we make has lots of baggage with it, known or unknown.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Consistently wrong since 2002

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

This fight is for everything.

The words do not have to be perfect.

They punch you in the face and then start crying because their fist hurts.

No Kings: Americans standing in the way of bad history saying “Oh, Fuck No!”

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Books are my comfort food!

It’s pointless to bring up problems that can only be solved with a time machine.

“In this country American means white. everybody else has to hyphenate.”

… pundit janitors mopping up after the gop

Mediocre white men think RFK Jr’s pathetic midlife crisis is inspirational. The bar is set so low for them, it’s subterranean.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

If rights aren’t universal, they are privilege, not rights.

If ‘weird’ was the finish line, they ran through the tape and kept running.

I desperately hope that, yet again, i am wrong.

White supremacy is terrorism.

Internet has been in and out and waiting for the technician to swing by, but I was curious. Does the site seem to be fixed, or are you all still having problems? How about the mobile and rss feeds- someone mentioned that, too.

*** Update ***

Does anyone know where I can watch the first episode or two of Leverage. I want to give that series a shot, but don’t want to waste thirty bucks on the whole first season. I can’t find anything on Hulu. Is there anything Huluesque where I can watch an episode or two?

Intermittent long reload times, intermittent mysql errors, and the things you already know about, no quicktags, no 5 minute edit.

You can watch this season’s Leverage episodes on the TNT site — but it’s not near as user friendly as Hulu. You can also get season one from Netflix: rent, stream, or Roku box.

Season one is worth owning in my opinion; we all loved it around here, adults, teenagers, and even the 9-year-old. The three episodes so far this season have been entertaining, but not as good as season one.

@A Mom Anon: Until the medical profession changes to a Mayo Clinic/Cleveland Clinic model the incentive for doctors is to provide the care that gives them the best return on investment for their time. It really is quite simple. Until then, big Pharma, big Insurance, and the AMA are in profit mode. It is an inherent conflict of interest.

@The Grand Panjandrum: Before they passed a law preventing doctor’s from suggesting tests at off sites they own, Price did exactly that. He thought my son needed an MRI and had me go to a site that he had part ownership in. At the time we were IBM and they self insured. They called to see if he informed me about his ownership in the equipment. The test was unnecessary and after that we used another orthopedic doctor.
The Mayo Clinic or Cleveland Clinic would not appeal to him.

I have two cats. Between the two of them they receive 3/4 cup of food a day. It’s dispensed by this automatic food dispensing machine. This is Blue Wilderness dry food. They’ve been on this diet for six months now… they lost a bit of weight but not a lot. I think they’re down from about 13 lbs to 12 lbs. They’re a lot more active though. Lot’s of running and climbing and such.

Half cup of food a day is fine as long as it’s a quality one and it’s not mostly fillers.

Leverage is fun, but they have to dumb it down (Rogers recently said on his blog, in response to a query about why they found it necessary to “hit the audience over the head” with a couple of plot points, that their testing shows that 30% of the audience completely does not understand the con at all, but enjoys watching for the characters anyway.)

Au contraire. 1/2c food daily is just about the perfect amount for an indoor cat who is fed a quality food. My 5 range 10 – 14 lbs and that’s their daily quota. 1/4c. morning and 1/4c evening. Only one is a chub but she’s just an air fern and is actually only about a pound overweight these days. I can live with that.

I was ranting about the birfers on my blog the other day, and I got this is response from “Jack”:

The time lines, places, actions, motives, when analyzed, support, and are consistent with, what is the answer to the Obama birth puzzle:

Obama’s grandmother is his mother and his mother is his sister.

Think about it. Review all the facts and claims.

Now, he didn’t say he was a birfer, but as he sent this in response to my ranting about birfers, I just assumed he was. It cracked me up because this idiot was so stupid, he didn’t realize that if his grand theory was true, it would totally eradicate the faux concern about Obama’s lineage as both his grandparents were born in Kansas.

Hahahaha. Birfer logic makes me laugh.

Isn’t the point of a “caper” plot to be intricate enough that the viewer doesn’t really get til it all starts to click? If they spelled out everything they expected to happen and what their Plan B would be, it would hardly be fun to watch.

Obama’s grandmother is his mother and his mother is his sister

Damn, O is a furriner. From Appalachia, where I grew up. My countryman. Or, is it just Chinatown.

    @eric k:

We got a Roku box to watch Netflix-on-demand and I don’t think we’ve watched an actual disk in months. There’s so much streaming stuff, it’s incredible.

Anyway, if you don’t want Netflix, iTunes has the Leverage eps for $2.99 each.

    We love Leverage!

I thought this was the denouement to Chinatown.

I actually like that we’re seeing this season how easily things can go pear-shaped for the Leverage team. Yes, it’s formulaic–that’s the nature of what they’re doing, where there aren’t really long-term story arcs, so most things have to be largely wrapped up in 48 minutes. The reason I adore the show isn’t because of the plots; it’s because the characters are made of screwed-up awesome. And hot.

@Joshua Norton: The only thing that would make me laugh is to find out that Greta Van Sustern is somehow involved.

All I can say about Leverage is that I love it, but if they’re going to “dumb it down” I’ll quit watching. I watch the show for the characters and the con, not to be spoon fed like I’m a damn simpleton.

@dmsilev: I’m guessing mailman. Maybe milkman. Maybe stud breeder.

@Delia: That’s what someone commented on my blog! I haven’t seen it, so I dunno.

    John:

On the earlier Open Thread, RedKitten posted a message that had a time stamp of 12:22 pm. I responded within, probably, two minutes — my reply was only even remotely amusing or pertinent in close proximity to RK’s post and I know there was nothing showing in the queue after her. Anyhow, I hit Submit and went off to do other things. When I checked the thread a few hours later, my post showed 1:16 pm and it was far, far from the Kitten’s post.

Everything on the ‘Berry, by the way.

FWIW. But it’s the only issue I’ve had with BJ lately so I shouldn’t complain.

    @ Delia:

In Chinatown, the mother is the mother AND the sister. “She’s my daughter!” (slap) “She’s my sister! (slap)

Bobby Darin’s real mother posed as his sister, and his grandmother posed as his mother.

And interestingly, given the Chinatown connection, same thing happened to Jack Nicholson. Nicholson was almost 40 when he found out.

I just had an opportunity to see Chinatown on the big screen; it’s as relevant to today’s politics as it was in the ’70s, perhaps more so.
