“Something is way crazy out there,” Bachmann said in her remarks, billed as a “personal legislative briefing” by the Golden-based Independence Institute, which bills itself as a “free market think tank.”

However, last election, Bachmann lost twenty points in just days after appearing on Hardball. If it wasn’t for the third party candidate siphoning off roughly 8-10% of the vote, she most likely would have lost.

I would chalk it up to gerrymandering. The party in power tries to distribute registrations in their party as broadly as possible and concentrate the opposing party’s registrations in as few districts as possible, which if done correctly yields the greatest number of safe/likely seats in the House (and state legislature).

Minnesota is weird that way. The Twin Cities are very liberal, like Bay Area liberal almost. The exurbs and surrounding areas are red (and white) as can be, mostly staunch anti-abortion farmers. Plenty of mega-churches in the outer ring suburbs and exurbs (like in Bachmann’s district). Most of the state is red outside of the Twin Cities and the Northeastern part of the state (Duluth and Iron Range). The Northeast is super strong union country, iron miners mostly. The Iron Range is not particularly socially liberal, but the unions keep them voting Democratic by a huge margin.

Obama, et al, have let this thing play out this long to give America a good and serious taste of what the opposition really is. Had they been proven wrong — had the GOP, or some of the GOP, really been willing to play ball — great! But they knew it wasn’t likely (I even have a theory that that’s why Grassley and Enzi are on that committee of six — because the Democrats knew they would act to prove the White House’s point), and they’ve been waiting for the right moment in the zeitgeist to go “Well, look. We tried. Come on, America, let’s put on a health care reform!”
I will admit that there are holes in my theory but (again) I’m supposed to be working, so I won’t fill them right now. But I do, quite sincerely, think that this is pretty close to what has been going down.
And, oh, BTW? Very Lincolnian. (See, for instance, A. Lincoln’s refusal to join the nascent anti-slavery Republican Party when it was made up exclusively of people perceived by the public as extremist nuts, followed by years on the anti-slavery speaking circuit, helping to change hearts and minds, and then: BAM — he becomes the passionate leading organizer of the new party, and its first President.)

EVERY bill that has come out of committee is better than what the gang od six are doing, so i do not think they ever seriously thought that was the ONE bill for everyone.
This goes to conference. It comes out with public option. it goes by way of reconciliation. It becomes law. Failure is not an option.

My guess is you’re still using the old-fashioned kind, with the needle? When it hits the stopping pin, the mechanism is supposed to shut off (or at least shunt the current away from the electromagnet that moves the needle), but if a sufficient charge is encountered, the capacitor for the shunt circuit gets fried. The best irony meters use a vacuum tube instead of transistors, since a tube can take the extra load without damage, in the same manner a tube-type guitar amp can be overdriven with a useful result (or so some claim). The really best irony meters are rack-mount, with external power supplies, but those are (a) expensive, and (b) pretty much immobile.
The knowledgeable irony collector uses the simpler kind, like the one of yours that exploded, and just expects to replace them periodically, like light bulbs. Next time, get the cheapest LED-style irony meter and you should be safe enough.
