Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Not all heroes wear capes.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

The willow is too close to the house.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Roe isn’t about choice, it’s about freedom.

This fight is for everything.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

Eh, that’s media spin. biden’s health is fine and he’s doing a good job.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

A Senator Walker would be an insult to the state and the nation.

Even More Stupid

Here:

In a fiery speech that had her conservative Colorado audience cheering, U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann railed against the dangers of health care reform and other Democratic initiatives, warning the proposals “have the strength to destroy this country forever.”

“This cannot pass,” the Minnesota Republican told a crowd at a Denver gathering sponsored by the Independence Institute. “What we have to do today is make a covenant, to slit our wrists, be blood brothers on this thing. This will not pass. We will do whatever it takes to make sure this doesn’t pass.”

“Something is way crazy out there,” Bachmann said in her remarks, billed as a “personal legislative briefing” by the Golden-based Independence Institute, which bills itself as a “free market think tank.”

Yeah. There’s something crazy out there.

She can always be relied upon to bring even more crazy to the mix, can’t she? I can’t say I’d be entirely opposed to her attempting that method of becoming blood brothers, though, if she so chooses.

Here’s what I remain most confused by.

This woman was elected in Minnesota? I have lived in Minnesota, briefly went to college in Minnesota, have had family and friends in and from Minnesota my entire life. My associations with Minnesota are all folksy/comfy, or edgy/forward thinking, and liberal. See also: Amy Klobuchar, Al Franken.

“Right now, we are looking at reaching down the throat and ripping the guts out of freedom,” she said. “And we may never be able to restore it if we don’t man up and take this one on.”

“This has to be defeated,” she said. “Cap and Trade has to be defeated. Those two alone have the strength to destroy this country forever, so we have to defeat them.”

    this woman needs medication.

Also, this strikes me as a good time to present my running list of people in the public eye who appear to have quite genuine mental illnesses, and if they would get help, I would actually have a lot of compassion for them:

    1) Michele Bachmann
    2) Glenn Beck
    3) Rod Blagoevich
    4) Mimi Roth (the anti-obesity lady who appears to actually have a serious eating disorder)

And here’s my list of people in the public eye who appear to have quite genuine mental illnesses, and if they would get help, I would still hate them and hope they get put away:

    1) Dick Cheney

(Actually both lists are longer than that, but I really should be working. But I believe you take my point).

Sometimes, when I read stuff like this, I just want to stand against a wall and bang my head on it. I think it would be more productive than trying to disagree with someone who thinks health care in the USA is a covenant issue between God and his people.

However, last election, Bachmann lost twenty points in just days after appearing on Hardball. If it wasn’t for the third party candidate siphoning off roughly 8-10% of the vote, she most likely would have lost.

It’s called redistricting. Back when the Minnesota House was in control of Pawlenty and the wingnuts, they drew the sixth district that now snakes from Central Minnesota St. Cloud all the way to Wisconsin Border Stillwater. I’ll bet my mother’s mortgage that Bachmann helped draw that district while she was a state senator so that she could make a go for it some day.

    @ellaesther:

I would chalk it up to gerrymandering. The party in power tries to distribute registrations in their party as broadly as possible and concentrate the opposing party’s registrations in as few districts as possible, which if done correctly yields the greatest number of safe/likely seats in the House (and state legislature).

…and NR sorta beat me to it.

Minnesota is weird that way. The Twin Cities are very liberal, like Bay Area liberal almost. The exurbs and surrounding areas are red (and white) as can be, mostly staunch anti-abortion farmers. Plenty of mega-churches in the outer ring suburbs and exurbs (like in Bachmann’s district). Most of the state is red outside of the Twin Cities and the Northeastern part of the state (Duluth and Iron Range). The Northeast is super strong union country, iron miners mostly. The Iron Range is not particularly socially liberal, but the unions keep them voting Democratic by a huge margin.

@NR: I believe he’s not anymore! Or so Rachel Maddow led me to believe last night.

Here’s my theory, it’s been my theory for months, and until I’m proven wrong (I said PROVEN! That’ll require history to be written, so I’m fairly safe), I’m sticking to it:

Obama, et al, have let this thing play out this long to give America a good and serious taste of what the opposition really is. Had they been proven wrong — had the GOP, or some of the GOP, really been willing to play ball — great! But they knew it wasn’t likely (I even have a theory that that’s why Grassley and Enzi are on that committee of six — because the Democrats knew they would act to prove the White House’s point), and they’ve been waiting for the right moment in the zeitgeist to go “Well, look. We tried. Come on, America, let’s put on a health care reform!”

I will admit that there are holes in my theory but (again) I’m supposed to be working, so I won’t fill them right now. But I do, quite sincerely, think that this is pretty close to what has been going down.

And, oh, BTW? Very Lincolnian. (See, for instance, A. Lincoln’s refusal to join the nascent anti-slavery Republican Party when it was made up exclusively of people perceived by the public as extremist nuts, followed by years on the anti-slavery speaking circuit, helping to change hearts and minds, and then: BAM — he becomes the passionate leading organizer of the new party, and its first President.)

EVERY bill that has come out of committee is better than what the gang od six are doing, so i do not think they ever seriously thought that was the ONE bill for everyone.

If he was planning to turn the tables on the Republicans, surely the time to do so would have been right after one of their top negotiators blatantly lied to the public, no?

Obama wants to encourage community service on the anniversary of 9/11. This has the strength to destroy this country forever.

Absolutely true. Because the country derives its strength from unserved (or disserved) communities. Provide services to communities and the nation falls to the ground, as the sainted Richard Nixon said, a pitiful, helpless giant.

Yeah, ironranger (I’m originally from the Range, btw), if the economy continues to suck up there, I foresee a “they want to take away your guns” campaign making pretty strong inroads for the Republicans. Thanks for the help re: Minnesota! I forgot, conveniently, about Coleman and Pawlenty. And gerrymandering, that’ll do ya in every time. I used to have family in St. Cloud, so I take it as a personal affront that St. Cloud was likely part of the reason we have Bachmann around today….

I also feel the need to say this…. (There’s a Debbie Downer in every crowd, and apparently it’s my turn) I don’t want to see a Wingnut Masada, or anything of the sort. It’s not even funny to joke about it. When they make these kinds of jokes over on the other side of the street, we get all kinds of pissed off, and rightfully so. Bachmann is an idiot who mis-spoke when she was trying to say something about becoming blood brothers (not sisters, Michele?). There’s just nothing funny in wishing suicide on anyone, not even in political jest form.

    @IndieTarheel:

    My irony meter just exploded.

My guess is you’re still using the old-fashioned kind, with the needle? When it hits the stopping pin, the mechanism is supposed to shut off (or at least shunt the current away from the electromagnet that moves the needle), but if a sufficient charge is encountered, the capacitor for the shunt circuit gets fried. The result is either a melt-down or an explosion.

The best irony meters use a vacuum tube instead of transistors, since a tube can take the extra load without damage, in the same manner a tube-type guitar amp can be overdriven with a useful result (or so some claim). The really best irony meters are rack-mount, with external power supplies, but those are (a) expensive, and (b) pretty much immobile.

The knowledgeable irony collector uses the simpler kind, like the one of yours that exploded, and just expects to replace them periodically, like light bulbs. Next time, get the cheapest LED-style irony meter and you should be safe enough.

OT – Fellow compassionate conservativism in the House of Representatives:

Rep Lynn Jenkins tells 27 year old waitress to “grow up” and “go buy some health insurance”

    http://thinkprogress.org/2009/09/01/jenkins-grown-up/

What pisses me off, more than anything right now, isn’t this vile shit. It’s the silence from the left. Why isn’t the video in that link being played nationally in democratic ads? Why aren’t the Democrats playing the Health Insurance lobby off of every other lobby in Washington, saying “Hey, we know your businesses employ millions of people, how would you like to not have to be forced to buy group Insurance blocks for your employees as benefits that end up costing you billions of dollars?”

I’m just absolutely disgusted with the fecklessness on the left right now.

To quote Bruno from The West Wing:

Because I’m tired of working for candidates who make me think that I should be embarrassed to believe what I believe, Sam! I’m tired of getting them elected! We all need some therapy, because somebody came along and said, “‘Liberal’ means soft on crime, soft on drugs, soft on Communism, soft on defense, and we’re gonna tax you back to the Stone Age because people shouldn’t have to go to work if they don’t want to!” And instead of saying, “Well, excuse me, you right-wing, reactionary, xenophobic, homophobic, anti-education, anti-choice, pro-gun, Leave It To Beaver trip back to the Fifties…!”, we cowered in the corner, and said, “Please. Don’t. Hurt. Me.”

    1) Michele Bachmann should be publicly shamed, loudly and frequently, for being an outrageous piece of shit whose brand of politics is both anti-democratic and anti-intellectual, and has no place in decent society.

I’m convinced that this is what’s driving a lot of the crazy we are seeing now. Republicans/conservatives have to know, somewhere in the depths of their conscience, that they bear a huge responsibility for the stinking pile of mess they’ve left for Obama to clean up and it’s too much to deal with so they have to project all their faults and fears onto the “Other” . Michele Bachmann has that wild-eyed religious fervor of one who is unconsciously deeply afraid that her core beliefs are wrong, thus has to double down on the crazy talk, hoping to convince others (and thereby herself) that really, she sees the Truth; this mess can’t be of making – it’s gotta be Those People! And They Must Be Stopped! Or our (their) worldview collapses….

That’s a metaphysical question. I think of this kind of discourse as a kaleidoscope. Little bits of information and misinformation — no distinction — are jumbled together, rotated, and the resultant pattern emerges as speech. Every speech, every sentence, is composed of the same bits rearranged. The result is to principle and coherence as a kaleidoscope is to landscape painting and architecture.
