Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

How any woman could possibly vote for this smug smarmy piece of misogynistic crap is beyond understanding.

Our messy unity will be our strength.

Second rate reporter says what?

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

“woke” is the new caravan.

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

If you voted for Trump, you don’t get to speak about ethics, morals, or rule of law.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Jack Smith: “Why did you start campaigning in the middle of my investigation?!”

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Since we are repeating ourselves, let me just say fuck that.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

One way or another, he’s a liar.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

Welcome to day five of every-bit-as-bad-as-you-thought-it-would-be.

Do we throw up our hands or do we roll up our sleeves? (hint, door #2)

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Went out and had a pregame meal at one of my favorite Mexican places, and am now just pacing the house. Go STILLERS!

In the history of sports programming, has there ever been cooler or greater theme music than this remarkable, amazingly kickass music that NBC used as their opening theme for NFL broadcasts in the early 1970’s?

It looks like they’re showing it on the web for free for anybody interested. The NFL is the only thing I wish I had TV for, but if they get their act together with web broadcasts I’ll be set.

    @NobodySpecial:

The music you linked to is a little too militaristic for my taste.

Football is a violent game and I have no wish to make it less violent, but I’m a little tired of the view among tv execs that because football is violent, the only music to introduce it or accompany highlight reels is military style music.

That NBC theme from the early 1970’s was cool because it stood out in stark contrast to bombastic military music.

When I lived in Korea, I relied on the Armed Forces Network for football. It’s a great service, but the games were broadcast the next day, so often, I’d end up seeing the scores online before seeing the games live (see Steelers VS Seahawks Superbowl XL).

Something I’ve been interested in lately is how mobile tech is being used to solve some of the world’s intractable problems.

Like, for instance, the idea of using mobile phones that are given to kids, free of charge, and they can use it however they want. The catch? They gotta recharge their minutes/text usage by solving problems. Math quizzes, history questions, whatever else to help educate kids. Who pays for the minutes? Non-profits or government agencies. An intriguing model and one that has some seriously interesting potential for third world countries. Putting up something like this would also be relatively low cost as compared to more traditional methods of training teachers and sending them out to places that are highly inaccessible, dangerous, or both.

There’s actually a whole bunch of other stuff in this space (how about teachings farmers best techniques, giving weather updates, etc) that I’ve recently been researching and trying to figure out how to get involved.

    Errr…hope that was somewhat useful.

I’ve had some luck in finding carnacerias (sp?) in South Carolina or Virginia on occasion, but you have to go to the Hispanic part of town to get decent quality. A lot of times, there are ppl *trying* to approximate tex-mex, but dumbing it down for the local palate.

It is amazing to me how tenaciously the right wing clings to a meme once it’s been fed into the Mighty Wurlitzer. This whole thing about the HCR bill allowing illegal immigrants to get in on a PO. Besides the fact that there is explicit language in the bills that forbid this, it is mind boggling even if there wasn’t/

First off, illegals have been able to purchase private insurance forever, and there is no outcry to ban this, even though the insurance industry gets government subsidies all the time, including with the recent stim bill.

And now, the wingnut plan to fix healthcare would give insurance industry oodles more tax payer subsidies for about everything under the sun, including to help the uninsured get covered. No outcry to ban illegal immigrant dollars from going to Aetna. Just good bidness.

And why the outcry only with the dems govment PO? That Obama and dems have said WILL NOT get subsidies from the gov, except maybe some startup seed money.

Pure ideology, nothing more, nothing less. Mindless tribalism that is soaked thru with hypocracy, lies, distortions and general skullfuckery. The right wing is going to bring down this country, if we let them.

And I will hunt down and kill the first person here who says NY has good Mexican food. May be the only time I’ve walked out of a restaurant mid-meal. It’s the Jackie Chan Movie of horrible cuisine.

Major shock when I moved to NY area from L.A. Most of the low-end food in NY stinks. Not all, but you gotta work to find decent cheap food. A lotta places use grease that a mastodon would consider old. There are good places in NY, but generally they are the pricy joints.

I was used to Hollywood, where the taqueria around the corner made their own fresh corn tortillas a couple times a day, and the hamburger place down the street fried their own hand cut potato chips right when you ordered them, and there were 3 Thai restaurants that were all completely fab hole in the walls with fresh Thai food to die for, or if you were feeling LA-holistic, you could go to the health food place and have a mashed fresh avocado on homemade bread just out of the oven. Everything cheap, everything amazingly delicious. NY was a shock — really dead food.

I think what tastes like good Mexican food is dependent on where you first started eating it. I grew up in southern Colorado, and all of the Mexican food in all the different homes and restaurants was slightly different, but was usually prepared in similar ways and only used a certain palette of spices and flavors. Mexican food in northern and central New Mexico was very close, with minimal differences. I didn’t even know what cilantro was until I moved to Arizona in 1985 because I had never tasted it in anything.

When I was growing up in NYC, the good cheap eats came from tiny hole-in-the-wall joints, many of them takeout only, because the combination of outrageous rents and labyrinthian ‘health code’ regulation made it impossible to serve decent food at sit-down prices. My late dad was a foodie 30 years before the term was invented, so he had a roster of “secret finds” all over Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Bronx where the food would make you sing with happiness, but they all seemed to involve walking six blocks from the subway to an unmarked alley and threading your way past the idling delivery trucks to the worn steps leading to a dark basement (or sometimes a second-floor walk-up). And, of course, if there was a menu, it was usually chalked on a blackboard and not written in English, or even in Roman script. So you ordered by pointing & nodding, and then took your foil-wrapped booty back home (or to the nearest park, or even a convenient stoop when the savory odors overpowered your fastidiousness)…

(pause to find drool bib). Anyways! Things may have changed in the past quarter-century, but from what I’ve heard the rents are still high and the health codes have only gotten more elaborate. But the good news is, the interwebz have gifted us with sites like Chowhounds and the million NYC-based blogs, so surely there’s some way you can research the neighborhood(s) where you do most of your noshing and see where the best delis, taqueritas, and samosa joints are?

It is amazing to me how tenaciously the right wing clings to a meme once it’s been fed into the Mighty Wurlitzer. This whole thing about the HCR bill allowing illegal immigrants to get in on a PO.

They have to find some excuse for claiming that Wilson’s (Kook-SC) “you lie” wasn’t a lie. After all, Lord Cheney told them they shouldn’t Leave Any Wingnut On The Battlefield.

Living in CA, I’ve long thought that I’d take the illegal immigration caterwauling seriously the day that the INS starts spending it’s time in the Central Valley going after farmers, rather than further south going after motorists. And I live in northern CA where our freeways don’t have warning signs depicting a family running from the INS. I’ve yet to see anything to change my mind.

Thank dog for Chowhound and the subway! When I moved to NY, back when velociraptors climbed streetlamps to drop down on the unaware, there were still a few of those tiny dives in Manhattan. No more. But it’s an easy shot into Queens on the F and V and there’s TONS of fabulous food there.

Corner Stone: Don’t know when you were looking for Mexican food but things have improved. As recently as 20 years ago, there just weren’t that many Mexicans living here. Now there are hundreds of thousands, mainly from Puebla. There’s a tiny store in my neighborhood where I can buy mole, and Herdéz ranchero salsa, and amazing tacos. They also have avocados, perfectly ripe, all year round. I don’t know how they do it but I’m damn glad they do.

Ten or fifteen years ago, in early December, I was waiting at a corner and in the park across the avenue a church group had gathered for a procession in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Nothing remotely like San Gennaro; just a group of people in white surplice-type things and one big banner, the Mexican flag with her image imprinted on it. The woman standing next to me, also waiting to cross, said, “Huh. What’s that about?” Being an editor and an oldest child and generally insufferable like that, I answered her: patron saint of Mexico, feast day, blah blah. And—this is what I love/hate about New York—she started arguing with me. “No, it’s not. It’s some Christmas thing. Look, red. And. Green.” She rolled her eyes and the light changed and we stomped off, swathed in disdain, each for the other.

Anne Laurie, I am so envious of you for growing up with a foodie. I have a deep and intimate appreciation of all forms of barbecue but I was in my 20s before I learned that parmesan cheese didn’t always come in green cardboard cans.

And let me put in a good word for Houston as a food town. International port of entry and all that. Literally insufferable climate but great food.

Dude, you’ve got to go with something that you’re actually interested in, not a “niche.” If you really like woodworking, you could make a very interesting blog out of that, but if you arbitrarily decide that “heuristic barbecue” is the next big thing you’re not going to be able to sustain it over the long haul if you don’t find it really interesting in itself.

Semi-related anecdote. I can’t remember the (British) author’s name, but back in the ’70s or ’80s there was a humorist who was putting out a collection of his pieces and he wanted a title that would really pull people in. His agent or somebody in publishing told him that the evergreen subjects were World War II, pets and sports. So he titled his book Golfing for Cats.

. . . Okay, as usual, I looked it up. It was Alan Coren. What about World War II, you say? Check the jacket art.

Oh, I know there ARE good cheapo places in NYC, but you have to search them out. Whereas in L.A., you could pretty much count on the corner joints being fresh and authentic whatever they were. It was a surprise to me.

Would love to have gone ally crawling with your dad. :)

Yeah, I think Texican when I think Mexican food. “Non-border” Mexican food is very different.

Here is the D.C. area, at least on my side (Arlington-Alexandria), the problem is that all the “Mexican” restaurants are bait-and-switch operations for Salvadorans, Peruvians, Bolivians, etc. They have “Mexican” names and a few Mexican items on the menu, but then everything else is from where they’re really from. Not complaining–a lot of it is very good–but I often find myself jonesin’ for straight-ahead Tex-Mex. Something like Karam’s in San Antonio. Haven’t made a pilgrimage there in years.

He seems to think that after one crumby sleep study session suddenly I’m all nearly brain-dead from lack of blood-oxygen saturation or some such. But anyway, I put the thing on this evening and immediately felt like I was drowning in air. I shortly did figure out how to “breathe” while wearing the contraption, but there’s nothing now but wondering how in Hades my panicky-ass self is going to let me go to sleep with all that racket going on in my throat. The upside to all this is I get to play out some Darth Vader fantasies while trying to get my shit all unretarded. Does that make any sense to anyone else? No? @IndyLib: Yeah, I of course agree with you. I grew up in a huge Tex-Mex environment, and love all that. But one of my best friends when I was young was also from MX, at least his family was. Su abuela no habla Ingles y su madre hable un poco. So I remember lots of traditional MX meals at his house – and let me tell you that breakfast on Sat was legendary. Real old school chorizo with scrambled eggs and potatos. Damn.
They made meals that had no connection to the Tex-Mex places around us. Yet they were tasty and well done, yet different. Different textures, spices, etc.
I’ve been all through MX and seen what some tiny bit of their cuisine comes to. It’s different from TX-MX and that’s cool. But no where else have I been in this country that came close to anything I could decently call “Mexican food”.

All of Nashville Skyline is pretty much Dylan at his most vocally accessible. My favorite: “Lay, Lady, Lay.”

I much prefer Dylan as a composer than a performer. With almost all of his songs, my favorite version is done by someone other than Dylan. The opposite is true with the Beatles. I almost always ultimately prefer their version to someone else’s, even though I think there are hundreds–probably thousands–of great Beatles covers. For example, José Feliciano, “In My Life.”

Okay, the Steelers win in O.T. I don’t have a problem with that, but this game reminds me of one little tweak I would like to see to the rules, i.e., overtime is sudden death after each team has had one possession.

You win the coin toss and score on your first possession, fine. But the other team has one possession to try to tie it up. After that it’s sudden death.

I think the way it is now it puts too much importance on calling the coin toss correctly. Don’t like that, especially after a hard-fought tie game.

@Jason Bylinowski: It takes quite awhile to adjust to a cpap. Just hang in and keep trying. You’ll find in the beginning you’ll pull it off in the night. When you wake up just put it back on. Concentrate on how your brain and heart appreciate it if you keep breathing all night. The first two weeks you hate it and are sure it will never work. In 4 to 6 weeks you’ll be adjusted and find it hard to sleep without it. If you have a ramp feature it helps so you can fall asleep at a lower setting. Your nose will feel strange in the morning from the flow. Saline spray helps and in time your nose will adjust as well.

And after that fumble by Ward, I was scared. To come back with an important pass to him, and pull off the win, makes me think will to win is real.

I always attributed that to the fact that the true pros have a short term memory for stuff like that.

“Yeah I blew the last play, forget that, this is a brand new down.”

Takes a ton of belief in yourself to put something like that aside.

@Steeplejack: I like a suggestion I read about somewhere: In overtime, the ref calls off yard lines starting from one. The ball is awarded to the team that accepts one of the numbers first. The ball is then placed on that teams side of the field at the accepted yard mark, and that is where the team tries to score from.

    @Steeplejack:

Exactly. I’ve always felt the current NFL overtime rule is extremely unfair.

One possession for both teams in overtime is an eminently reasonable proposition and I don’t understand how any true football fan could oppose this idea.

Speaking of football, I’m flying to SF on the 19th to watch the Hawks play the 9ers with my wife and 6 of our closest friends. Gonna try to live up the the 12th man reputation, face paint, and loud, loud noise. Gonna do everything we can to make the day suck for the natives. First time I”ve been out of state since I was in the Army in the late 90s, should be awesome.

Just a friendly tip for a life long bay area resident. Do NOT attempt that at a Raiders game. You’ll be dead before kickoff. Us Niners fans are a bit more laid back, just don’t spill our wine spritzers.

@ninerdave true, or a lot of weed.

@jk I think the one possession each rule change would both be more fair, increase fan appreciation, and work with broadcast time requirements. However, it would cut down on the sense of getting robbed, which actually does increase fan motivation.

To take tonight’s game, I think the Titans should have gotten the ball after the Steelers scored in OT.

I only favor 1 possession for both teams at the start of OT.

If the Titans had responded with a FG to tie in OT, then I’d favor sudden death because both the Steelers and Titans would have each had 1 possession in OT.

Giving each team one possession would not lead to massively longer games. It would still be sudden death after each time had one shot.

I think the college rules suck, and I don’t even remember exactly what they are. Don’t they forgo the kickoff and just put the ball on the 30 yard line or some bullshit like that? What the fuck. That is not football.

@Jackie: Even though I know it’s probably too late, I feel compelled to reply anyway, thanks for the tips. I actually just tried to go to sleep with it on and had a weird experience, namely that I got this strange tingling in my arms and legs. Not like a loss of blood flow. Think tingling as in Chris Matthews after a two-segment McCain interview-tingling. It freaked me out and I had to go downstairs for a snack, and now here I am. Hopefully it’s not a bad sort of effect. It happened jut as the machine was starting to ramp up to level 10, and lasted about five minutes, only stopping because I turned off the machine. Strange, and hopefully it won’t happen again because I don’t want to be scared off from this thing.

    @Jason Bylinowski:

Very odd. I have a number of family members diagnosed with sleep apnea, and all of them were able to sleep well once they got the cpap machine.

Obviously, you want to check with your doctor for advice.

Do you have a mask that just covers your nose or your nose and mouth? There are some varieties of headgear that might help. One relative had headgear that included a chin strap to keep his mouth closed. He ditched the chin strap because it seemed like overkill, and got a smaller, more comfortable nose mask.

One tip that might help. One relative had lesser sleep apnea symptoms if he fell asleep in a recliner chair or a comfortable sofa. Sitting up rather than lying down seemed to put less pressure on his airway passages. As he was getting used to the cpap machine, he would use it while sitting in the recliner, and this helped him adjust.

    Good luck to you.
