Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

T R E 4 5 O N

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Come on, man.

After roe, women are no longer free.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

White supremacy is terrorism.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Remember when the MoveOn member compared Bush to Hitler and it shook the very foundations of our society? Now Serious People like Dick Armey are condoning similar comparisons:

One blogger who writes regularly for Freedomworks, Ross Kaminsky of Boulder, Colo., compared Obama’s Tuesday address to U.S. schoolchildren to the tactics of Mao Zedong, Joseph Stalin, Pol Pot and other murderous dictators. “Totalitarians of all stripes put great emphasis on brainwashing the young, and Obama is no exception,” he wrote on the group’s Web site under the name “rossputin.”

If Ross plays his cards right, he could end up marrying one of the Atlantic’s bloggers.

Making the obligatory mention that MoveOn.org did not, qua MoveOn.org, liken Mr. Bush to Hitler, but instead held a video contest in which the creator(s) of one of many unsolicited entries likened Mr. Bush to Hitler.

Not that anybody notices, remembers, or cares.

If one left wing loon anywhere behaves badly, teh entire Left is guilty (see Churchill, Ward). On the other hand if somebody from the right shoots a cop or a museum security guard, or a Unitarian Church full of worshippers, well there are no broader implications. There’s no accounting for lone nuts with guns. And a house full of hard-right eliminationist propaganda. That’s just a coinky-dink.

@Davis X. Machina: In the spirit of the teabaggers and FreedomWorks claims I think it should be done by executive orders so they have something else to bitch about.

I haven’t watched any of the coverage of the 9/12 so-called event, but Annie Laurie’s early post is spot on. Most other days of the year New York City is just another bastion of liberal fascism to this crowd of birthers, baggers, secessionists and tenthers. It’s nice to see that at least they agree the government should be fiscally responsible and not give away the tax payers dollars. Now if they can somehow be made to understand who those dollars are actually going to some real change in DC might happen.

And some day a magical pony will build a campfire big enough for all of us to stand around, hold hands and sing Kumbayah.

I am like Mr. Kaminsky in at least one respect: I’m perfectly willing to “[compare] Obama’s Tuesday address to U.S. schoolchildren to the tactics of Mao Zedong, Joseph Stalin, Pol Pot and other murderous dictators”:

    It. Was. Nothing. Like. Them.

There, how’s that for a “comparison”.

The problem with all those historical monsters was decidedly not that all of them gave speeches, whether to schoolchildren or to anyone else; the problem was the heaps of dead bodies and shattered lives they left in their wake. It was the deprivation of due process, of basic rights, of dignity, of freedom, and of course of life. And deprivation of privacy, come to think of it, not that the Republicans understand any aspect of that one, and I don’t just mean “privacy” as an allusion to “Roe V. Wade”.

The fact that Kaminsky can’t tell the difference between “stay in school, study hard, and wash your hands” and “kill (the Landlords/the Kulaks/the Literate)” is a sure sign that Kaminsky really should have stayed in school and studied hard. I hope at least he’s washing his hands.

There are slim pickin’s in the Rochester group. Perhaps there is something in the water up there. Perhaps the ladies seek distance from DougJ. Who knows? But nevertheless, here is Toni, with whom I would be proud to teabag.

Toni is more easily led than Freddie Johnson. Freddie requires cigarettes and ‘scratch’ in order to participate in political events. But Freddie is active in politics nonetheless, having registered to vote seventy two times.

“Johnson, who works at a cellphone kiosk in downtown Cleveland, said he was a sitting duck for the signature hunters, but was always happy to help them out in exchange for a smoke or a little scratch. He’d collected 10 to 20 cigarettes and anywhere from $10 to $15, he said.”

Toni would likely listen to Barack’s readings and say to herself, ‘is this all he does is talk?’ I have heard this line from a couple of perceptive kids lately. Obama is no Hitler.

I’m expecting at least one picture of the ‘non-partisan’ event to show Obama hanging in effigy. I’m encouraged that the early picture of “Bury Obamacare with Kennedy” signs being handed out means that the tone of the day is right on target.

And not having Stewart and Colbert on the teevee for this is killing me.

ok, BoB is just creepy. Can’t you just see him lurking in the back rows at his Beck gatherings, surreptitiously snapping women’s photos on his cell phone and fantasizing about teabagging them? Probably following them in his pickup and fapping away as he imagines the glorious meeting of the teabags until it erupts in heavenly fireworks and then, exhausted, he goes home to his brick oven and listlessly tosses pizza dough, thinking of what might have been.
