The Republican leadership speaks:
Referring to an incident in which a white student was beaten by black students on a bus, Limbaugh said: “I think the guy’s wrong. I think not only it was racism, it was justifiable racism. I mean, that’s the lesson we’re being taught here today. Kid shouldn’t have been on the bus anyway. We need segregated buses — it was invading space and stuff. This is Obama’s America.”
A full transcript of Limbaugh’s comments on his radio show is available at MediaMatters.org.
Limbaugh’s comments came after a called complained to say that local law enforcement said the attack probably wasn’t racially motivated. The incident had been hyped by the conservative Drudge Report, which posted a video of the fracas.
Since the President is apparently responsible for answering for everything black people do, it would be nice if some enterprising reporters would ask our lily white Republican congresscritters what they think about Limbaugh’s latest outburst.

Sean Hannity and Michelle Malkin told me so today!
Why won’t you ask Obama about ACORN?
ellaesther
This is not exactly the point you’re writing about here, but I feel a compelling need to say the following:
I don’t think that Obama was asked about Kanye West because they’re both freaking Black. I think it was because the reporter was chatting with his interview subject and they were loosening up with the latest stupid and inconsequential news item. Because that’s what they do.
Honestly. The fact that ZOMG! The President Is Black! is not necessarily the reason that everything around him happens the way it does.

Apparently, there’s video to come of the white guy beating the black woman (military reservist) in front of her daughter at Cracker (!) Barrel in Georgia.

I think it certainly helped to grease the skids a bit, but it seems like first foremost it was a) an attempt by an interviewer to loosen up/develop repore with an interviewee; and b) two parents discussing how their kids reacted to a jackass storming the stage at the VMAs.

Since I’m old and have a lot of experience, I believe it is a case of “stupid white people” thinking. Since I was dating a black woman, I HAD to know the answers, too!

A co-worker one day at coffee asked me (a freaking white guy) what black people thought about “White Men Can’t Jump”…really, really stupid white guy thinking!

As I understand it, the story is that two bullies beat up a kid for moving one of their school books off a seat and sitting down.
I watched the infamous clip of our nascent race war, and that is what it looked like to me. I saw little sign of racial divide in the school bus, at least from who laughed, and who stepped in to stop it. In fact, it brought back less than fond memories of my high school days.
In my school, the most common source of bullying were the people we called ‘Aggies’, which were kids from farms and especially cow ranches from the countryside around town. They were mean assholes, many of them.
To this day, when I go back to my hometown and see a skinny white OK or TX type cowboy dude, I get an automatic defense reaction. Not that they bothered me much. I grew faster than most in HS and was very big compared to most everyone else. I think one of them tried to hit me once for some manufactured insult. I vaguely remember lumbering around and moving the dude out of my way. But I still have the bad memories of that bullying group.
So, anytime I see a skinny white OK or TX type cowboy looking dude, they must explain these high school bullies to my satisfaction before they have any credibility with me, even if they are very nice people.
Lush Rimbaugh must explain to my satisfaction that smelly obese dude to crowded my seat the last time I took the subway. And the drugged out white panhandler who banged on my car at the intersection when I wouldn’t give him some change. Otherwise I must suspect him of fomenting a civil war of some type between obese druggy moneygrubbers and the rest of us decent folk.
I am outraged that he has not issued statements to my satisfaction on these matters.
PS: technically the ‘Aggies’ were the CA Bakersfield, Sierra and Coast Range foothill subspecies of cowboy, but similar in appearance to the OK-TX variety. These were distinct from the Sierra Hillbillies, who are not Appalachian type, but an altogether different type, and who where generally friendly people unless provoked.

Army reservist beaten in front of child
By Kristi Swartz
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
A man beat an Army reservist in front of a Morrow Cracker Barrel, yelling racial slurs at her as he kicked her in the head, Morrow police said. The assault happened in front of the woman’s 7-year old daughter, who stood there, crying, witnesses told police.

Morrow police arrested Troy Dale West of Poulan after reviewing a video surveillance tape and talking to customers. He was charged with battery, disorderly conduct and cruelty to children.
The woman and her daughter were leaving the South Lake Plaza Drive restaurant last Wednesday about 7:30 p.m. as West was heading inside, Capt. James Callaway of the Morrow Police Department said.
The restaurant doorway nearly struck the woman’s daughter, prompting her to tell West, “Sir, you almost hit my daughter with the door, could you please be careful,” Callaway said.
West responded, telling the woman that she needed to watch her daughter and then began yelling racial slurs at her and kicking and punching her in the head, Callaway said.
Witnesses told police the woman kept telling West that she was an Army officer.
“She kept saying, ‘Sir, I’m a United States soldier, don’t do this,’ ” Callaway said.
Police interviewed customers and other witnesses and arrested West at the restaurant, Callaway said.
He was charged with cruelty to children, a felony, because he beat the woman in front of her daughter, Callaway said.
“I was in the ambulance with her daughter, and she was extremely upset, crying and asking why he would do this to her mom,” Callaway said.
Police have turned the case over to the FBI’s Civil Rights Division, saying it may be a violation of the Federal Hate Crime Law, Callaway said.
“We are not making the decision that it’s a hate crime, we’re referring it and letting them make a decision on it,” Callaway said.
Officials at the Cracker Barrel in Morrow as well as its corporate offices in Lebanon, Tenn., referred all calls to the police and the FBI.
Calls to the FBI, which also has the video surveillance tape, were not immediately returned.
“We’re glad that the Cracker Barrel called the authorities,” company spokeswoman Julie Davis said.

I find these conversations interesting because it seems to me to often wind up being, predominantly, a bunch of white people arguing with other white people over whether such and such a thing is racist. Practically all the prominent pundits interpreting these events are white males, so are a surprising proportion of prominent bloggers.
Sometimes I look at these conversations and I start to feel like, as a white person and thus someone who has lived my entire life free from knowing the feeling of racism’s sting, maybe I’m actually not the best person to judge whether something’s racist or not.
At this point I start looking around and thinking, well, if I’m myself not a reliable judge, is there some kind of external, objective thing I could use to judge in my stead? And at this point I start focusing on two things:
1. If you look at polling, somehow or other, african-americans and hispanics are moving away from the Republican party, and the right in general, in droves.
2. The libertarians John refers to and other conservative apologists seem way, way more interested in convincing the other white bloggers that such-and-such a thing is not racist than in specifically thinking about creating an environment that would make african-americans and hispanics feel comfortable joining their movement or their party.
I’d be curious, those ‘reasonable conservative’ bloggers who are certain of the wrongness of any idea the conservative message right now is tinged with racism, how they’d explain these two things.

And yes, there is also racism in this country from non whites toward whites, though I’m surprised there isn’t more as retribution. considering the volume put out by our hue. Or maybe you also are an idiot.
Wow. You are EXTRA weak today.
calipygian
AD=Active Duty
Correct.
calipygian
And Oxy-hole=normal person’s pie-hole.
Just to be crystal clear.

@Midnight Marauder:
At least I’m not throwing around racial stereotypes and pretending they are compliments. It must be ok though, since you’ve done in a number of times.
General Winfield Stuck
Makewi is now reduced to throwing the equivilent to blogging spit balls. If the regression keeps up it will turn into baby burp/
AkaDad
I’m making a list of the race traitors in here and contemplating the use of the 1% doctrine as a pretext for a preemptive attack.
Leelee for Obama
@Midnight Marauder: Yes, she is WEAK, but she’s still here. Can it be that, perhaps, she thinks she has troll-fu? I just wonder if RushBo has room for her on his afternoon slime-time?
Ash Can
@Leelee for Obama: So Leelee, Makewi was actually there at the dance party in question, right? And therefore knows exactly what s/he’s talking about, right?
Leelee for Obama
@Ash Can: It seems she believes so. I couldn’t verify though. Isn’t that the usual thing with this sort of situation? Of she believes it, it must be so, right?
Gwangung
Ah, the Sulu approach.
Ash Can
@Leelee for Obama: Actually, who cares? S/he couldn’t answer a couple of my earlier questions about teabagger crowd estimates, and when a troll blows off straightforward, objective questions, that turns on the big, bright neon “SPOOF” sign in my eyes. Methinks Makewi is Makebelieve.
Makewi
Once again you guys are busy justifying your bigotry, which is so much better then the bigotry the other guys are doing.
I think I’ll dub you the Rush Limbaugh branch of the white power structure.
@Ash Can:
Whatever numbers I would provide to you would be discounted in any case. But if your really serious about trying to figure it out, I’d look at Metro’s numbers, at the former standards the parks department used to use when they used to estimate, and finally verified pictures from the event. Or you can hang on to one persons unofficial estimate as if it was the end all be all of estimating, and never question why this guy is now giving estimates.
kay
@Makewi:
Oh, Makewi, if it was so great why’d you all have to lie about it?
That’s what all the jeering is about.
You could not accept the 70,000 number, although that’s a perfectly respectable number, and instead had to go ludicrous, to 2 million, complete with photographs of other, earlier, events as “evidence”.
You had a tea party and 70,000 people came. Many of them were carrying crazy-ass, blatantly racist signs. That’s where the racism charges come from. It’s not a goddamn mystery. People SAW the IMAGES and WORDS on the signs. They weren’t imagining those. That’s what happened.
Makewi
@kay:
You have a real problem with thinking that you are addressing some larger group instead of just one individual. You have a further problem of only caring about the issue enough to examine it up to the point where you have convinced yourself the “other side” is lying. Funny, since we both know thats where you start from anyway, so really you go looking for the proof of what you already believe and then you stop. Truthy.
What was the lie btw. One guy posted a picture in error and then retracted it, and others errantly picked it up as truth. The thing is, I’m not lying about it, but then you aren’t really interested in the truth anyway.
As for the signs. I’m sure the level of crazy was exactly what it was during any of the leftist protests during the last 8 years.
Makewi
@kay:
If you weren’t so damn lovely I would totally not like you.

Once again you guys are busy justifying your bigotry, which is so much better then the bigotry the other guys are doing.
Lemme guess, you’re one of those silly conservatives who likes to complain that liberals aren’t tolerant because we’re intolerant of bigots, right? Or that pointing out and criticizing bigotry is oppressing free speech rights?
Um, whatev. Move along, trolly troll.

Asian Posse qualifications:
Martial art: t’ai chi ch’uan (Bonus points: I have successfully argued people down from claiming it’s only a meditation method with no ties to actual fighting. Also, I know why Shaolin Soccer calling the bun maker’s art t’ai chi kung fu is funny.)
Chopsticks: I own my own in both Chinese and Japanese forms. Yes, this means I know there’s a difference.
Chop suey: Anything my Quebecois grandmother made in a crock pot for family gatherings in MA is not Chinese food.
Calculus: Only got a B+ in trig. Never tried calculus, but I’m an actor/singer. By Japanese idoru standards, I was already overeducated by the time I hit the age to be a two-hit wonder.
Special talents: Was an otaku in college, a time which predated Disney importing Miyazaki films by over 15 years. Have willingly eaten chicken feet and pig ears. Can pronounce karaoke as well as being capable of doing it sober. Have also successfully convinced a waiter that while white people don’t like that, I do.

@Makewi:
Christ. It’s a conspiracy, Makewi. We’re all acting in concert to minimize the numbers at your stupid rally.
Next time, count in a way that doesn’t make non-lunatics bust out laughing, and we’ll credit you with each and every attendee, but for God’s sake, stop whining.
Conservatives were jumping up and down and high fiving at the ridiculous amount of media coverage their smallish DC rally got, until those ugly images started to appear, and now they’re all whiny and petulant again.
Tough shit. Take the good with the bad. You wanted attention. You’ve been pitching a year long hissy fit since you lost the election.
You got it. We SEE you. Enjoy.
Makewi
@zoe kentucky in pittsburgh:
Nice try, but all your doing is showing you have problems with reading comprehension.
General Winfield Stuck
I see Makewi still at it. Those bats are busy in that belfry tonight.
Makewi
@kay:
Whatever. You’re just lucky that your loveliness covers up your paranoia and fantasies about some sort of group mind among the dissenters. The problem is that the lunacy among the out of power set was wildly successful under the Bush regime, and so, naturally, its being used again also to great effect. I’d get used to it, since this seems to be the way it’s going to be from now on.
I’m curious about these images though, I’d like to see what exactly you are talking about.

@Prattlehorn:
That it’s the Obama Administration’s fault for encouraging Americans to get more exercise. Because white men beating up on black women is the most long-standing, sanctified form of exercise in America’s Heartland(tm)!

I meet all the qualifications for the Balloon Juice Asian Posse except for the (admittedly unspoken) “being Asian” part. Damn. A wannabe again.

Application for Asian posse membership.
1. Must know one martial art. Check: yubiwaza.
2. Must be able to use chopsticks. Check. For eatin’ and for fightin’. (And for lovin’–see “special talents” below.)
3. Must know why ordering chop suey in a restaurant is so very embarrassing. Check. Because it’s a great traditional Hawaiian dish, not a great traditional Chinese dish.
4. Must have gotten a B+ or better in calculus. Didn’t take calculus in high school. Took “Vectors, Matrices and Linear Algebra” in college. Waiver, please.
Special talents: Chopsticks (see 1 above). Know and appreciate Kurosawa, Miyazaki, Ghost in the Shell and Yi Yi. Look good in yukata and gi.
What color will our cool ninja costumes be?

@General Winfield Stuck: I think it’s basically universally accepted at this point that Rush Limbaugh is racist. He practically brags about his racism and dares you to complain.
The weird thing is the conservatives seem to have somehow pulled this rhetorical trick where they’re not responsible for anything Rush Limbaugh says and you’re not supposed to act like he is representative of conservatism as a movement, despite him having more demonstrable power within said movement then most of the actual elected Republicans
General Winfield Stuck
@mcc:
Wingnuts have made so many deals with the devil, it’s a wonder they can walk and chew gum at the same time. Everything is an angle to be played to make it as a party one more day. They are flying by the seat of their electoral pants with no end in sight. That’s what happens when you invite the dregs of American society into your tent and they shit on your carpet and dare you to do any thing about it.
Mayur
@Makewi: And apparently “your” having problems with your grammar.
Try actually making an intelligent (and intelligible) point, and we’ll see where we can go from there.
Darkrose
Is it just me, or does everyone want to be part of the Asian Posse?
Original Lee
@asiangrrlMN: Oooh, can I join? I am a green belt in Tae Kwon Do (and can count to 20 in Korean), I can use chopsticks, I never order chop suey, and I got an A in every math class I ever took up through Differential Equations. Please please please!
Nick Danger
That it was obviously sarcasm? (In other words, Limbaugh WAS NOT saying we need segregated buses. He was saying that, per the kind of thinking he’s criticizing, we need segregated buses.)
Da Bomb
@asiangrrlMN: My Qualifications
I took Muay Thai for about 2 years
I love Kung Fu movies. Of course, Bruce Lee and Samo Hung
I made a B+ in Trig and a B- in Calculus

@asiangrrlMN (#1):
Really ? I’ve studied a few of the arts; struggled through calculus, but did do the whole physics thing (and used to be a jackleg statistician). Use chopsticks ? Even at home. I don’t even do chop-suey fu movies on the tv thingie; unless there’s just nothing else. But generally, Fu Sheng, Ti Lung, and all the rest of the Shaw Brothers stable rock !
Where the heck were you when I lived out in Mpls ?? And yeah, once again I’m a day late to the conversation…
