Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

You can’t love your country only when you win.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Today’s GOP: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

Infrastructure week. at last.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

You cannot shame the shameless.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Republicans do not pay their debts.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

If you get your news from liberal sources, the earth is round

This post is in: Media, Assholes

From the hand job Rick Stengel just gave Glenn Beck:

If you get your information from liberal sources, the crowd numbered about 70,000, many of them greedy racists. If you get your information from conservative sources, the crowd was hundreds of thousands strong, perhaps as many as a million, and the tenor was peaceful and patriotic.

I long for the day when both Time and Newsweek go under. It won’t be long now.

This is even worse than the puff piece the Post did on Beck a few years back.

I was hoping this would come up on this blog. I want to know John Cole’s thoughts on the “liberal media” in the past. Was there something to that critique in like 1985? I was like 6 then, and not paying enough attention.

Because this shit sure seems pretty bad to me.

What’s interesting about that passage is the lack of any nod to objective reality. It seems to be a belligerent defense of believing whatever makes you feel good, and dismissing any facts that make you uncomfortable.

Time and Newsweek are hideous lumps of decaying mucous. I haven’t looked at either one for years except when trapped in my dentist’s office, and that’s if there aren’t any stupid magazines about vacations in places I can’t afford and she can.

I thought they were dead already, frankly. The one thing that struck me when I did last look through a copy was how much they reflected television. How much they wrote about teevee, in other words, or what happened on the tube. Not being a teevee or popular culture person, most of what I saw was unintelligible. For a long time I’ve regarded them as just another kind of tabloid, no different in substance from the newspapers at the supermarket checkout counter wailing about UFOs in the White House.

Apparently I wasn’t wrong. Put me down for a round when both of them go under.

Yeah, but the Marvel guys have two advantages. First, the Marvel team knows they’re inventing storylines out of pure fantasy. Second, they’re working for an audience with a better grasp of the difference between “how the world actually works” and “what would be really cool”. Possibly because your average twelve-year-old, or twenty-eight-year-old Orthodox Geek, doesn’t have the freedom to pay attention only to those outside inputs that will confirm their dearest personal prejudices.

Proof that there is still value in major media, stolen from the Houston Chronicle:
MAX’S FRIED-EGG SANDWICH

    TRUFFLE MAYONNAISE:

    1/4 cup prepared mayonnaise

    1/2 teaspoon truffle cream

    CHILI BACON:

    Extra virgin olive oil

    1/2 small onion, diced

    1 small tomato, diced

    1 jalapeño, minced

    1/2 cup habanero salsa

    4 strips bacon, cooked

    Juice of 1 lime

Leaves from 3 sprigs of cilantro

    SANDWICH:

    3 eggs

    2 slices of Pugliese bread

    1/4 cup Gruyère

    2 tomato slices

1 leaf of hydroponic Bibb lettuce

Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

    FOR THE TRUFFLE MAYONNAISE:

Place mayonnaise in a small bowl. Stir in the truffle cream till evenly dispersed. Refrigerate.

    FOR THE CHILI BACON:

In a hot skillet, place a small amount olive oil and add the onions. Allow the onions to sweat until they start to caramelize. Then add the tomatoes and jalapeño. Cook for one minute. Add the Habanera salsa, bacon and lime juice. Reduce until you have a nice consistency. Remove from heat and add cilantro.

    TO ASSEMBLE SANDWICH:

Lightly butter the slices of Pugliese and place them on a hot griddle. After the bread has toasted on one side, flip it and allow it to toast on the other side. Place the eggs on the griddle, making sure not to break the yolk. Once the white of the eggs have set up, turn them over and place the cheese on top of the eggs. Add the chili bacon to top of eggs and cook 30 more seconds.

Take the slices of toasted Pugliese and liberally spread with truffle mayonnaise. Place the egg and the chili bacon on one slice of bread. Add the tomatoes and lettuce, and season to taste with salt and pepper. Top with the last piece of bread.
I’m not a Beck fan, and I believe that the pictures would indicate in the neighborhood of hundreds of thousands of protesters.

I’m arguing it because the earth tends to be flat on both sides of the equation at times, depending on how one is looking at it and which specific source one is getting information from.

I’m also arguing it because up until January of this year, dissent, or protesting if you wish, was the height of patriotism. Now the same group who claimed that over and over is using sexual imagery to describe other dissenters.

I long for the day when both Time and Newsweek go under.

Over the years, I’ve had direct personal knowledge of a number of articles that have appeared in either Time or Newsweek. Without exception, they all contained serious factual errors that could have been corrected with minimal fact checking.

The last time I thought either magazine served a useful purpose, I was at a friend’s house looking for something to shove in front of my friend’s cat so he wouldn’t baucus* on the carpet. Time proved barely adequate. An old Look or Life would have been better because of their larger format.

So, in the end, Time/Newsweek are no better than second choice as barf targets for cats. Sweet.

*I thought I’d give it a test run as the latest of an uncountable number of synonyms for vomit.

I’ll point out Kucinich and McKinney being 2 elected Dems who also were/truthers and your move will be to try to paint them as outside the mainstream or some other such horseshit.

Face it, you believe what you believe because of your affiliation to your party/ideology. As such, you will always minimize that crazy/evil/immoral on “your side” while thinking the same on the other is the sign of the coming end of days.

    DougL (frmrly: Conservatively Liberal)

    September 17, 2009 at 6:52 pm

If you get your information from liberal sources, the crowd numbered about 70,000, many of them greedy racists. If you get your information from conservative sources, the crowd was hundreds of thousands strong, perhaps as many as a million,

…and if you read Time magazine, you might will not find out at all.

    Fix’t.

This is a perfect example of why getting facts via the MSM is impossible. When you present two sides of an issue and treat the statements by both as ‘fact’ and truthful, you are not reporting and informing, you are intentionally chumming the waters in hope of feeding a frenzied fight between sides. In the MSM, facts get in the way of driving a story in a particular direction. There is no money in reporting mundane factual data that counters an argument, that just ends the argument and kills the ‘story’. It’s better for the MSM to drive the storyline by muddying the data and painting all positions, no matter how extreme or wrong, as fair positions for people to take on an issue.

They want to keep the merry-go-round spinning but that is one ride I refuse to take. Unfortunately, too many others are enjoying the ride.
