Not sure what the weather is like where you all are, but here it is crisp, cool, with sun and blue skies as far as the eye can see. The smoker is already going and it will be a full day of rails to trails, college football, and smoked meat.
Don’t expect to see much of me.

That’s what the weather here is like, too. In a few hours I’ll be walking down to the local watering hole to watch Michigan State beat Notre Dame yet again. Hopefully, none of Rich Rod’s players will punch anyone today.

It’s raining here in GA for like the 4th or 5th day in a row. I can’t wait for some crisp and clear fall weather,I am OVER summer and humidity and heat. Blech.
The cookout food sounds wonderful, even though I can’t eat any of that stuff now for health reasons.

Crisp, cool, and struggling to be sunny. Tai chi in the afternoon (which I desperately need) and then just a day of watching some games.

It’s as stunningly beautiful here as it is there, John. Just a perfect day. The late night thread inspired me and I have a selection of Chris Cornell projects playing with heavy emphasis on Soundgarden and Audioslave. All the windows are open and I am doing some light fall cleaning. Had a great Chinese meal last night at our favorite Asian place and found out they are taking our suggestion and putting in a sushi bar. They have hired a terrific sushi chef from an excellent sushi place in Pittsburgh and it should be up and running within a month. This makes me happy. Your menu for today sounds delish. I, however, have a big pot of spaghetti sauce cooking on the stove for dinner tonight and for freezing. It is making my apartment smell lovely.

It is gorgeous here in Blighty, too, but we’ve both been feeling ill for the last few days (the Bean is fine) and as such not able to enjoy the weather to the fullest. I managed to pull out three miles on what should have been a twelve-mile run this morning, but just barely. Normally Saturday is my cook-ahead day (chili, soup, pasta sauce, bread, granola, etc.) but I think I will be napping instead.
As an added bonus, it was our 4th wedding anniversary yesterday. We spent it shivering and being sick. Blurgh.

Excellent day in Ann Arbor, MI (high ~72, light wind, clear and strongly sunny; low this morning was 40). U/M is playing EMU, a fourth-tier team from Ypsilanti (the town nextdoor to Ann Arbor), which is basically a human sacrifice.

Here in Atlanta it is raining like a sumbitch for the mmmmth day straight. Forecast to continue like this at least through Tuesday.
My exciting Saturday so far is driving 20+ miles to get my car serviced. It grinds me every time because up until a few months ago my Saturn dealership/service was all of a mile from where I live. Then in January they closed it abruptly, bing bing bing, without a word of notice.
Come to find out also that the place I take the car now has no record of the vehicle’s history before January. I assumed all their fancy computers talked to each other, that the info was centralized, but evidently not.
Don’t mean to whine, as there are lots of people with much worse problems (“I felt sorry for myself because I had no Saturn dealership; then I met a man with no Saturn . . . .”) but my little mini-rant seems to suit the weather.
Mazel tov to those of you with a gorgeous fall day to play with. Enjoy your football and feasts.

https://balloon-juice.com/?p=26154#comment-1349041
Here was a recent email from her new owners to John:
In the three weeks we’ve been promoting her, this is her best yet in terms of total votes. She’s been in the top 30 every week so far, which is extraordinary when you realize there are 40,000 (or so? I’ve lost count) dogs in the competition. John has been kind enough to offer us a blogad space so we’ll have an ad up in the top right side of the blog soon. If we can get her one 1st place week, she will be in the top 12 semi-finals, which is the immediate goal.
Thanks for all the support and rallying behind her, Juicers. Any and all monies go to the non-profit her rescuer is founding – the woman who rescued my “foster”, Annie, who now must suffer a life of constant shame and Humiliation By Accessories.

It’s definitely our real first day of Fall here. Brisk, sunny, trees turning and leaves starting to fall all along the street. We really did not have summer here in WNY.
I am cooking ribs in the crockpot. I put about a third of white wine in the bottom, added the ribs, chopped onion and put in 3/4s of bar-b-que sauce. Smells great! I have been empting the refrigerator and it’s freezer for the last few days. We will be getting my dream come true with a side by side refigerator and matching stove. Next project is rip out the cupboards (circa 1965) and install a new carpet.
Read the menu on another thread. Made me take out my ribs to cook. I am making yams, chef salad (he hates slaw) , baked beans and corn bread.

We lost our Maggie last night. We knew it was coming, and finally called a kind vet to come help her move on. Besides being the most beautiful dog I’ve ever seen, she was the presiding spirit in our home. I feel like a dull sword has been thrust through my heart.

I think I found B.O.B. in the letters to the editor of my local newspaper:
Obama: King of the caterpillars
Caterpillars and butterflies share the same DNA but are very different. Caterpillars consume other people’s gardens. Butterflies pollinate and beautify them.
Butterflies are transformed from caterpillars that turned away from their self-centered ways and obeyed God’s genetic command to hang in their cocoon, as if in God’s protective hands. Slowly He transforms them into butterflies, stripping off their old nature and giving them a new one. Butterflies are caterpillars that have been born again and like our butterfly forefathers, live under God’s authority and see the world from His perspective.
Trying to convince a caterpillar to see America from a butterfly’s perspective is impossible! Though caterpillars are evolutionists, they refuse to evolve into butterflies, so they still see America as one nation under Man. Until now Americans were primarily butterflies, but these rebellious caterpillars are growing in number and influence. Obama, the King of the Caterpillars has seized upon this and chose to bypass our Constitution with the GM and healthcare takeover to advance the caterpillars’ socialist worldview. Thus, America is in a culture war that the ACLU, Anti-Christian Litigation Union, has been waging for decades by attempting to remove any vestige of Christ from the public domain. Their strategy is simple. No God! No Butterflies!
Caterpillars can never see the virtues and honor the sanctity of our founders’ Constitution until they respect the authority of the God who inspired them.
Therefore, to take back our country we butterflies must re-establish Christ’s authority in America so God can help more caterpillars transform into the butterflies He intended them to become. America’s ability to resist Socialism is literally in God’s hands. No Christ. No Constitution. No country.

@SIA aka ScreamingInAtlanta: I’m very sorry for your loss. I recently lost my little red shadow, a Pomeranian who was almost 16. I’ll pass along something that a friend sent to me that really made me feel better:
Your Pets In Heaven
by Ken D. Conover
To have loved and then said farewell, is better than to have never loved at all.
For all of the times that you have stooped and touched my head, fed me my favorite treat and returned the love that I so unconditionally gave to you.
For the care that you gave to me so unselfishly.
For all of these things I am grateful and thankful.
I ask that you not grieve for the loss, but rejoice in the fact that we lived, loved and touched each others lives. My life was fuller because you were there, not as a master/owner, but as my FRIEND.
Today I am as I was in my youth. The grass is always green, butterflies flit among the flowers and the Sun shines gently down upon all of God’s creatures.
I can run, jump, play and do all of the things that I did in my youth. There is no sickness, no aching joints and no regrets and no aging.
We await the arrival of our lifelong companions and know that togetherness is forever.
You live in our hearts as we do in yours. Companions such as you are so rare and unique.
Don’t hold the love that you have within yourself. Give it to another like me and then I will live forever. For love never really dies, and you are loved and missed as surely as we are.
Your Pets In Heaven

While we’re on the subject of doggies, could you all send some good thoughts and prayers for my foster doggie, Roxie? She’s a boxer, lives next door, her people love her but are clueless and have never taken her for a walk or played with her, so I’ve been doing those things the last two years. She is a complete sweetie, about 6 years old. They’ve just discovered a cancerous tumor in her leg and she’s having surgery on Monday. The vet doesn’t think the prognosis is good, judging from first looks. I’m praying the vet is wrong.

It’s tough to lose a furry child. Last summer one of our dogs, 9 yrs old, suddenly died and a few months later our 19 yr old cat died which we knew was coming. We still miss them. Stair steps to lower level will creak for no explicable reason & I think it is our cat coming up. I choose to think it is.
The sister of the dog that died has arthritis in her back legs & the owner of the kennel that she (& the young dog we got soon after the previous dog died) stay at when we are on a trip recommended fish oil. We started giving her 1000 mg of fish oil (one capsule a day) in July & the change is quite noticeable. Previously she was nervous about walking on the wood floors & would try to scoot from one scatter rug to the next to avoid the hard surface. She would even look at us hinting that we should move a rug closer to her. Now she scampers around on the wood floors with no hesitation at all.

One local paper has a saturday opinion section called “Orchids & Onions”. The republican editor requires the names of the letter writers but they can choose whether or not to identify themselves when the letters get printed. Surprise, most of these big, brave souls choose not to attach their names to their rants. I’d like to see the WH respond to this in one of three ways. 1) say that President Obama was going to go on Fox until O’Reilly and Wallace pissed themselves after which he decided that Fox News anchors were a bunch of whining, chickenshit punkass bitches and that he’d have to kick their asses into shape if he went over there and he just doesn’t have the time. or 2) say that President Obama will be on Fox News right after he’s on other, more serious and substantive shows such as Car Talk, Opie and Anthony, Wait, Wait. Don’t Tell Me and a very special episode of Two and a Half Men. Or thirdly say that he’s willing to go on Fox but wants to be interviewed by Ernie “Keep fucking that chicken” Anestos because he’s the best that Fox has to offer.

@freelancer: @Wile E. Quixote:
I take a back seat to no one in my hatred of Fox News. It’s the most intellectually dishonest news organization in America. It’s programming is a super sized, putrid, steaming pile of excrement. Fox News is as fair and balanced as news media in Saudi Arabia, Iran, and North Korea. Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, and Bill O’Reilly are a rogues gallery of liars, fear mongers, and hate mongers. Fox News doesn’t report, it distorts, twists, contorts, and obfuscates the truth.
On the hand, I think Obama is extremely foolish not to go on Fox News Sunday this weekend. It makes him look cowardly and petty. Obama is smart enough and has sufficient command of details, that he’s quite capable of performing well in an adversarial interview. I’d love to see Fox News file for bankruptcy but unfortunately, but that’s not happening anytime soon. Obama is seriously misguided to boycott Fox News. They are a horrific news organization but they are a major player in the news business but Obama’s continuing avoidance of them is not the answer. No one, including Obama, can wish Fox News out of existence. I should know, I’ve been trying to do that for years.
