Vote for Bitsy:

stephen-colbert-and-bitsy

Rumor has it, Bitsy has long been a fan of Colbert and his understudy Jon Stewart. Go vote.

I just voted! Can we book Bitsy on Colbert?

Yesterday I saw something on one of Bitsy’s ads on the left column that says she’s in the Top 30 dogs. What’s that about? I didn’t see a link for Top 30 dogs on the website.

Technically this isn’t off topic, because this is an Open Thread:

The SadlyNauts (specifically D. Aristophanes) have an epic post, a fisking of a column that begins:

Here’s Paul A. Ibbetson, ‘lecturer on the Patriot Act’:

A return to the Planet of the Apes
    By Paul A. Ibbetson
… Before I begin to share why I believe this country is going to the apes (self-deserved destruction), which I am sure will make the fur fly among many who would falsely infer my assessment is focused somehow on race, instead of policy, and accuse me of crossing into the forbidden zone, let’s look at the overall message that the Planet of the Apes movies tried to convey.

Yes, let’s, Mr. Ibbetson. Lest our ape fur fly at the silly suggestion that your column comparing Barack Obama’s America to the Planet of the Apes might somehow be about race.

Here are the results of Week 9 Competition via Evelyn Bridges’ email last night. Evelyn is the lady who rescued her and is founding her own non-profit – Animal Rescuer Extraordinaire. Bitsy was 4th last week, which is tremendous, but in any given week it takes 3,000-4,000 to win lately. However, with Mozart and Colbert pooch out of the mix now, it clears the way for Bitsy to take it with perhaps less than 4800. Or so I hope?

    Mozart won with 4,802 votes

Lucy, Super Pound Puppy was 2nd with 2,802 votes

Glory was 3rd with 2,263 votes

And Little Bitsy was 4th with 2,060 votes.

RE: The Planet of the Apes and Missile Death

Here is a monkey who throws rocks at tourists. There are times when I can emphasize with this monkey. This is a primitive form of missile death.

This monkey, whose ancestors learned this skill, and survived competition with monkeys who probably could not throw rocks, or who could throw rocks with less accuracy or strength than this monkey’s ancestors. This is something called ‘Evolution’.

I kind of like this monkey and if we could have a beer together, perhaps he would stop throwing rocks at tourists. In Any Which Way but Loose, Clint Eastwood’s monkey drank beer and they got along great.

Jefferson writes in this remarkable letter to Adams about how gunpowder changed the nature of the evolution of man. I would argue that metal also changed the nature of evolution in men, admittedly to a lesser extent, as strength would still be a big factor in generating missile death with a spear, or an arrow.

In the case of gunpowder, muscle force is replaced by chemicals, expanding the importance of the brain, and reducing the importance of muscles.

Thus Jefferson’s conclusion that gunpowder removed Bodily Strength and established Talent and Virtue as the determinates of those who will sit upon the top of the Natural Aristocracy of Man.

Because this is an open thread, I just wanted to mention that Terry Gross’ guest today on Fresh Air will be former Senator Max Cleland. He’s written a new memoir (subtitle is something like “How I Survived Vietnam, Walter Reed, and Karl Rove”). I know some of my fellow Georgians (talking about YOU, Demo Woman and A Mom Anon) admire Cleland and loathe the guy who frauded him out of his Senate seat in 2002, and thought you might want to make a point of listening. (Max was also on Morning Edition today. It’s funny to hear him talk about Saxby Chambliss in pretty scathing terms without once mentioning his name.)

I did note that the school teacher resembled Palin, but this game could go on a while.

The College Student looks like the nerdy gun nut who brought the AR-15 to the Obama rally.

Dolly Madison looks like Ally Sheedy.

    Seriously, this painting is hilarious.

I also love how the two people without descriptions are “Business Woman” and “Satan”. I guess the nature of those two abominations to American Culture speak for themselves.

@freelancer: @geg6: Geez, I could play this game all day! Okay, did you read about the Fifty Stars and that they stand for the fifty states? And “some stars shine brighter than others”? I’m going out on a big limb here but I’m just going to guess those “brighter stars” stand for the “red states” where “real Americans” live.

Also, check out the litter loose sheets of paper at the foot of the distraught Supreme Court Justice. Each of them stands for a horrible S.C. decision (“Roe v Wade,” “Marbury v Madison,” etc.)

Finally, note that both Congress and the Supreme Court are shown, but if the White House is in that painting, it’s too tiny for my old eyes to find.
