Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Consistently wrong since 2002

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

These are not very smart people, and things got out of hand.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

They don’t have outfits that big. nor codpieces that small.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

Washington Post Catch and Kill, not noticeably better than the Enquirer’s.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

Fight them, without becoming them!

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

The last of this summer’s paltry tomato plants are well & truly frost-withered, and the final hastily-gathered bowlful of green fruits don’t look very promising either. But next week, the weatherpodperson promises, more 60-degree days!

Happy Friday night, y’all…

I’ve been thinking of that song lately. Day and night, the geese have been flying south. The leaves are mostly gone and it’s 24 degrees out right now. The thought of six months of nasty weather is a little unbearable.

Look for Bobby Abreu to be the offensive star for the Halos. However, Robby Cano, Hideki Matsui and the Yanks’ bullpen will be too much for the Angels of Southern California in game 2.

Lee Burridge & Andy Page – Do you smoke pot? (original mix)..

I mentioned in a thread a week ago that I have been making glace peaches and nectarines, using dried fruit.

It’s frighteningly easy and takes about an hour of actual work over a few weeks. Half a kilo of sugar, half a litre of water – bring to the boil and pour over a kilo of fruit in a heatproof container. Store in the fridge between treatments. On each of the next three nights, drain off the syrup into a saucepan, add another cup of sugar and bring back to the boil, then pour back over the fruit. On the fifth night, do the same thing, but this time put the fruit into the saucepan after the sugar has dissolved, and boil for about three minutes (at this point it goes all sticky and slightly caramelized). Store for 48 hours this time, then repeat the fifth night. (this is where I am up to). Then it has to be dried in the oven overnight at about 50 degrees C (120 F).

It gets darker and stickier and the fruit goes clear and it’s truly delicious.

Joni Mitchell, such a genius. Funny, isn’t it, how pure folk evolved over time, took on jazz and rock influence, while early rock took on jazz and folk influence, to eventually become what it did just five years later, eventually producing masterpieces like Court and Spark, Astral Weeks, etc. God what a time to be in the music scene! I used to think the early nineties were a great time to grow up musically, until I discovered the seventies in college. I seriously wonder sometimes, if, like Brian Wilson, maybe I just wasn’t made for these times….

Hope everyone has a grand weekend, as I surely plan to do so myself.

@Jason Bylinowski: Ah grasshopper… You are learning.

Of course there’s still great music coming out today, but IMO the 60’s, 70’s and very early 80’s were the creative peak for rock n’ roll, folk, jazz and even pop because the record companies loosened their grip on the creative and recording process (and the money) and turned it over to the musicians where it belongs. And of course psychoactive illegal substances had no influence on the creative process during this period.

It was the period between the total control over everything they had before, and the music as ‘product to be churned out’, ‘sign the next big thing’ aspect which has afflicted the industry since. Musicians eventually began owning their own home studios and creativity went through the roof. The early days of stereo FM radio was an awesome time for a music lover as I remember.

When I occasionally listen to the “oldies” stations and I hear the stuff I grew up listening to I wince and sigh, but I take comfort in knowing I won’t be hearing the lame product that’s on contemporary radio now played as golden oldies when I’m truly an old fart. Sorry, young ‘uns, I just don’t see it happening and I’ve been around a while.

A high school buddies’ dad gad a lot of Fairport, Steeleye Span and Jethro Tull in his collection. I don’t think we ever listened to anything but the Tull LPs (this would have been in the early ’80s). A few years later I started hearing Fairport and kicked myself for not having listened earlier.

Some of our best musicians over the decades largely played and wrote their music by ear.

While I read music just fine I really enjoying hearing something I like, picking up the guitar and noodling it out by ear. Same with the music I make, just pick it up and start with something that catches my fancy and run with it. If I like it then I write it and stick it away. Our son digs through my material and it is pretty cool listening to someone noodling away at my tunes.

My wife keeps bugging me to give names to my creations but I don’t write words, I just play music and there is no name for that. You just create it and know when it is right. Still, she has had me master her favorites and she listens to them on her mp3 player or on our stereo (cd). I gave them names like “Crunch 1, 2, etc”, “Twangy 1, 2, etc”, “Brain Damage 1, 2, etc”, “Medley 1, 2, etc” and such…lol

When you know the instrument, how it works and you have an ear for music, it just comes to you naturally. It’s hard to explain but you just ‘zone’ in on what you want and work it until you are happy.

@Andy K: The l.e.s.b. was actually Morbo’s Lake Effect Snow Belt, including Grand Traverse Bay, where the tv weatherpeople actually differentiate between the several inches of lake-effect snow that will pile up between yesterday’s several inches of pressure-front-weather-system and tomorrow’s several more inches of the next fast-moving front. Because it somehow sounds better if viewers think of it as separate layers of atmospherics, rather than another foot-and-a-half of stuff that will have to be lifted off the driveway. It is beautiful country, but I’m just as glad to live in New England, where at least the constant geographical gradients provide some wind cover {grin}.

My wife is a big Norah Jones fan. She plays her stuff all of the time. I like some of her material but it is a bit mellow for me. My wife plays violin, cello and upright bass and loves jazz and Norah’s material is right up her alley. I love to listen to my wife practice as it is very relaxing and pleasant to hear.

Especially when she cranks out a bit of Crazy Train or Mr. Crowley just to see if I am listening. That just sounds so cool from a violin, like it was made for it.

It was a standard of Joni’s back in her early days, but didn’t get released until one of her recent compilation albums, Songs of a Prairie Girl. Lately I’ve been into her first album, Song to a Seagull, produced by David Crosby and with Stephen Stills on bass. However it happened, whoever helped her, she really invented a new way of playing guitar.
