Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Second rate reporter says what?

Nothing worth doing is easy.

In my day, never was longer.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

If you are still in the GOP, you are an extremist.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

When do the post office & the dmv weigh in on the wuhan virus?

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

You can’t love your country only when you win.

We still have time to mess this up!

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Infrastructure week. at last.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Bark louder, little dog.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

I really should read my own blog.

Let’s finish the job.

@Comrade Mary: Thanks for the prompt, Mary. I will NOT sit here all day in my PJs and keep refreshing. No, I will NOT.

This is Rufus. He was #2 last week.
As far as I know (which is not far), he is her main competition this week. However, last week he and Alfred (who took first) snuck in. By that I mean, they’d not been in the top 30 gallery in previous weeks, as I recall, so I was not tracking their numbers.

You can check some of the other top scorers from previous weeks by going to the Top 30 Gallery by Week. It’s really not a very intuitive path to that page, so I hope this goes through for you.

@Laura W: You can see the reason for Evelyn’s emphasis on 1,000 votes per day. The last few winners have had 5000-6000 votes I think. Bitsy’s got a lot of repeat voters (JUICERS), but just needs a couple hundred new ones to step in and vote daily. Just for FIVE MORE DAYS!

There was some drama about “Mafia Wars” with Rufus and Alfred’s owners last week. I couldn’t follow the details on the Dog Contest Blog (second post down) but it seemed they were getting votes by promising product giveaways. The judges deemed it all fair. Maybe to entice new voters John could promise to give away….um….er….that needs some further development.

One more important point: if you’ve been voting under multiple email addys, please don’t. They look very closely at that when verifying the weekly winner:

Note: Over 500 votes were removed from Alfred’s total (votes that were determined “invalid” by the judges due to multiple voter accounts registered by the same person and votes from tyldd.com emails, etc.)

    October 20, 2009 at 12:38 pm

Scott @22: it gives tons of money to an animal shelter if LB wins, which I found out by watching the video. I had resisted this campaign until then, because I didn’t know what it was for. And was too lazy to find out, but the video made it easy.

    @Scott de B.:
It’s a 12 week contest. One dog wins every week. The winning dog each week gets $500. Then the top 3 runners up will win $5,000 and the winning dog will win one million dollars. This is the last week to vote for Little Bitsy to win one of the twelve weeks.

The money will all go to an animal rescue to help save more dogs and cats. It’s for an excellent cause. Please help!

LOL. I was really just wondering out loud. Are there any untapped sources of potential votes that we could try to get the word out to?

Maybe John should offer some kind of prize to anyone who posts saying they voted AND if Bitsy’s votes get over a certain number by a certain day – like over 3,000 by 8 p.m. tonight Eastern Time, or something like that.

Or maybe some of us loyal Juicers could come up with a series of prizes to offer for the next couple of days if Bitsy meets her goals?

    @Notorious P.A.T.:

    What’s the setup?

A naïve young priest, while on a rare walk through town, is accosted by a prostitute. “Psst! Father! Twenty dollars for a quickie!”

Confused, he walks on, only to run into another hooker. “Hey, padre, twenty bucks for a quickie?”

He hurries back to the church, and, while walking to the rectory, meets the Mother Superior. “Tell me,” he says, “what’s a quickie?”

She replies: “Twenty dollars, same as in town.”

Badda-bing! Thanks, I’ll be here all week. Try the prime rib tomorrow night, and don’t forget to tip your waitress.

Please check out our little (52 pounds…) Sachi, or Sachi-saurus! She is half Dachshund, half Catahoula Spotted Leopard dog.

When she was a baby, her original humans saw that one eye was not going to develop normally, so they took her to the pound and told the vet to “put her down, she’s defective”.

Fortunately, Diamond Dachshund Rescue got a call from the vet, and took her away. Her foster parents then noticed that she, even though still a young puppy, and even though she looked like a dachshund, was getting really big! Their pictures of her, in the middle, laying in a pile of dachsunds all napping, is priceless.

We decided to become her permanent parents, and now she is about 2 1/2 yrs old, and is the sweetest, best dog- in the top five of all time best dogs on this planet, she can be found!

Please vote for Sachi- the “little one” who escaped death and now enriches our lives in ways that cannot be quantified!

  68. 68.

    Deb

    October 29, 2009 at 7:20 am

@jeff holly; sorry I didn’t see your little Sachi before voting closed. My vote would still have been with Little Bitsy, but we could have appreciated your little girl’s story more too!

Let’s see what happens when the four finalists are announced on November14th. May the prizes go where they are most needed and deserved.

Although the $1million sounds huge, it is given over 30 years (that’s if the company is still operating over that time, and provided the nominated pet owner is still surviving and at the same address). The payout is $33,000 per year. In 30 years that will be a pittance. Worth winning anyway for sure.
