Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Do we throw up our hands or do we roll up our sleeves? (hint, door #2)

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

We will not go quietly into the night; we will not vanish without a fight.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Relentless negativity is not a sign that you are more realistic.

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

Just because you believe it, that does not make it true.

When you’re in more danger from the IDF than from Russian shelling, that’s really bad.

Let the trolls come, and then ignore them. that’s the worst thing you can do to a troll.

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

The arc of the moral universe does not bend itself. it is up to us to bend it.

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

“I was told there would be no fact checking.”

This blog will pay for itself.

The current Supreme Court is a dangerous, rogue court.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

DeSantis transforming Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

How stupid are these people?

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

Who Is the Real Barack Obama?

by John Cole|  October 21, 20091:41 pm| 398 Comments

This post is in: Black Jimmy Carter

FacebookTweetEmail

So far, I can recall Obama being compared to the following figures:

Hitler
Stalin
Pol Pot
Mao
Carter
Bush
Nixon
David Duke

I think now it is time to start the definitive list of people Obama has been compared to, good or bad. Include a link to the comparison.

Also, I’d like to see an account somewhere of all the people that Bush was compared to –by his own side. I’ll begin that one by reminding you that he was frequently compared to Churchill, apparently on the grounds that they were both male bipedal mammals.

I compare Obama to my Uncle Bill. Uncle Bill was smart, educated, curious, modest, engaged in politics, and genuinely interested in improving other peoples’ lives, which he did, by virtue of the work he did and the efforts he made.

Yes, Obama is like my Uncle Bill.

An inability to recognize achievement and skill in a black person, often manifested as an insistence that the accomplishments of successful black people were actually “handed to them,” is a sure sign of underlying racism, BOB.

OT, but if you wanted another reason to hate Ross Douthat, your wish has been granted:

At n+1 Panel, the Cat Got Douthat’s Tongue on Topic of of Gay Marriage

Ross Douthat, conservative op-ed columnist for the New York Times, was made visibly uncomfortable for a moment while onstage last night at the New School’s Tishman auditorium.

The question came from Christopher Glazek, a fact-checker at The New Yorker, who wanted to know whether Mr. Douthat and Mr. Salam believed that former RNC chairman Ken Mehlman, who has apologized on behalf of his party for the Southern Strategy, should also apologize for the Republican party’s gay politics.

At first Mr. Douthat seemed unable to get a sentence out without interrupting himself and starting over. Then he explained: “I am someone opposed to gay marriage who is deeply uncomfortable arguing the issue in public.” Mr. Douthat indicated that he opposes gay marriage because of his religious beliefs, but that he does not like debating the issue in those terms. At one point he said that, sometimes, he feels like he should either change his mind, or simply resolve never to address the question in public.

That is fucking rich. “I hate the gays because of what I believe, but don’t ask me to justify what I believe because exposed bigotry makes me uncomfortable SHUT UP, THAT’S WHY.”

Well, Obama would be the opposite of Pol Pot and Mao, who drove the intellectuals and bourgeois out of the cities into the fields and made them work to achieve proletarian/peasant conciousness (or death).

In Obama’s case, it would be taking the rural folks out of the fields and into the cities until they achieved urban hipster/metrosexual conciousness. But where’d we have them work? Obama is like Reagan

Steve Teles compared Barack Obama and Ronald Reagan

    http://tinyurl.com/yjsc22o

” President Obama is the one who resembles Reagan”

I consider this comparison bad, very bad, although your milage might vary (not as bad as Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao
    Bush or David Duke).

I really don’t know what else Teles wrote, because I gagged when he presented a statement by George McGovern as evidence about what “most Democrats” perceived in the 1980s. George McGovern ! If McGovern and I had made recommendations to the Democratic party in the 80s, they would be more likely to act as I recommended, since they wouldn’t be careful to do the opposite.

Personally I think very highly of McGovern, especially because he was the only prominent figure in the USA who said we had to liberate Cambodia from Pol Pot. Also, on the point in question — who is less bad — Daniel Ortega or Enrique Bermudes — the people of Nicaragua seem to agree with Mr McGovern, since they elected Ortega in 2006.

I don’t wonder what Teles thinks of that, since he obviously hasn’re re-examined his opinions formed in the early 80s in the light of evidence collected since 1985 at the latest (when I stopped reading he hadn’t mentioned the effect this guy named Gorbachev might have had on Soviet policy).

Nowhere. Obama hasn’t actually saved or created any jobs. So unemployed is what they’d be.

Technically, you’re right, I guess. On the other hand, the stimulus bill have saved one or two. I guess Obama opposed that one, just like his fellow Republicans.

Ed Rendell saw Adlai Stevenson in him. (In a bad way.)

Joe Bruno thinks he’s like Eliot Spitzer.

Someone who is not Victor David Hanson thinks he’s like Nero.

And a poetical Cal Thomas thinks he’s
There’s also Secretariat (or Barbaro if you don’t like him), Gorbachev, Grover Cleveland , Larry Bird, The Pink Panther, Godot, Joe Frazier, Harry Chapin, or Pharoah (which may be worse than Hitler).

    Pol Pot
    Mao
    Carter
    Bush
    Nixon
    David Duke

I think now it is time to start the definitive list of people Obama has been compared to, good or bad. Include a link to the comparison.

Actually, at the end of the movie, Gollum bites The Ring (finger still within) from Xerxes’s hand, falls into the Hot Springs of Doom, The Ring is destroyed, and Xerxes and His Ringwraiths are destroyed. The eagles come to save Leonidas and his “friend” Master Samwise from Teh Immortals, and all is well.

And the 30 plus thousand number

“These reports cover only direct, tangible jobs created by recipients, which means there are even more jobs created when those folks go out and spend their new earnings — the so-called multiplier effect,” Bernstein wrote.

The administration claims this multiplying effect means a million more jobs indirectly have been created on top of the direct ones. I have no doubt this is over estimated considerably, although more economic activity occurs when new wages are spent, and certainly more jobs get created.

    as of 10/10/2009

    Contracts: $16,090,959,442

    http://www.recovery.gov/Pages/home.aspx

Now, if you believe the contracts are purely service contracts, in which the money goes straight into people’s salaries, we can conclude that under this rather absurd premise, the average job cost $529,604 a piece.

If you believe the government is actually spending the money on work product – for instance, this contract for $516,650 is going to the Army Corps of Engineers to gravel over a road in Galveston – http://www.recovery.gov/transparency/pages/ProjectSummary.aspx?AwardId=24782&AwardType=CONTRACT
then it may be that some of the money is actually going to pay for expenses involved in doing the work.

Since the dept of labor actually keeps that sort of information, and since they work for Obama, you would think those figures would be front and center. Makewi:

And the other networks derided them calling them “teabaggers”, so it should end the debate on both sides.

    [emphasis added]

    Midnight Marauder:

Because they are, in fact, self-proclaimed “teabaggers.” What do teabaggers call themselves then, if not teabaggers?
And no, “Real Americans” is not an acceptable answer.

    Makewi:

They call themselves “tea partiers”. So no, they aren’t self-proclainmed “teabaggers”.

    gwangung:

After it was pointed out to them, no.
    But…revise away.

    slag:

Actually, this is true. I tweeted (back in my young and foolhardy days) with a teabagger who bragged about the fact that he popularized the term. Of course, it was just a path to martyrdom afterward, but he was pretty proud of it at the time.

So, there is your “well laid out argument.” The people who would come to be known as “teabaggers” referred to themselves when they burst into the national consciousness as…”teabaggers.” All you could muster in response is “Nuh uh, we they’re really “tea partiers!” More people responded that, no, you are, in fact, thoroughly mistaken.

    Your response:

This is a lie and you are a liar.

So spare me the bullshit about “I’m certainly willing to consider a well laid out case.” You’re not and you never have been. I vividly remember dealing with you during the Gates arrest thread a few months back (which, incidentally, is when I started posting regularly here) and how incredibly obfuscating you were in answering ANY FUCKING QUESTION that came your way. Right, because that’s all those problems from the Bush Administration sure will be yesterday’s news by 2010. It’s not the country is going to be digging itself out of that Bush-created hole for years upon years upon years. As far as Democrats “running on Bush” goes, I think this post from Steve Benen over at Washington Monthly (yes, I know Makewi can’t/won’t read anything) rebuts your attempted argument nicely:

Last night, for example, the president delivered a couple of partisan, campaign-style speeches at DNC receptions in New York. The combined total of references to “Bush,” “my predecessor,” the “previous administration,” etc. was zero. Obama talked about the challenges we’re all dealing with, but even in partisan speeches to partisan audiences, he didn’t mention the failed recent president at all. Obama made an oblique reference to “what was waiting for us when we began this presidency,” but if Lowry thinks that constitutes graceless, classless scorn, his rhetorical standards need reevaluation.

Unlike you, I remember Reagan and Bush I blaming anything bad on Carter, late into the 1980s. And of course, once Clinton became Pres, and pushed through his budget-balancing tax – which was mostly responsible for the start of budget surpluses – the Republicans started saying the good stuff was because of Bush I and Reagan. And of course, they tried to take credit for the 22,000,000 new jobs created during Clinton’s term.

    And so on.

You Bush idolatrices have studiously ignored the destruction of Bush’s wars and tax cuts for seven or eight years, so it’s understandable that anytime someone tells you the truth about how he fucked up the economy and the country, you start shrieking about Obama-this or Obama-that, as if our attention span is as short as yours.

No way to prove one way or the other, but I say yes.

It’s sort of like Hillary supporters coming around during the primary claiming she should get all the delegates from Michigan, even though Obama wasn’t on the ballot and she had agreed to not recognize their primary vote.

So then what you are saying is that the government has been completely ineffective at stopping the job loss hemorrhage in the private sector and that they’d rather just talk about the money they used to buy jobs in the public sector. Doesn’t seem like that much of an improvement in the argument of the effectiveness of the recovery program. But then I guess the alternative is what the rest of your cohorts are doing here, which is to scream it’s someone else’s fault. Which voters love to hear.

Seems like a lot of pretentious verbiage to mask the fact that you’re trying to blame all the country’s economic woes on a man who’s been president for 9 months.

The politicians whose asses you kissed had 8 years to fuck things up. When you act pissy that they’re not all fixed in a fraction of that time, I can’t tell whether you’re really that stupid or just disingenuous, tho I’m leaning toward the former.

Recovery.gov is listing the money in process as already spent. So the 173.2 billion is from that site.

You have absolutely no understanding of anything you’ve written today, and this is no exception. I’d explain it to you, but I might as well be speaking Aramaic, for all that you’d understand.

Actually, she’s claiming that the website includes money “in process” as part of the total money “spent.”

Which is interesting, because the terms “in process” and “spent” are ones used at the site I referenced, in a very specific way:

Spent: Money that has actually been paid, leaving the government’s bank account and entering the economy.
    …
In Process: Money that has been committed to a certain project, but not yet paid out.

Look for the tab DISTRIBUTING AND REPORTING on front page. I believe it is moneys paid out. I don’t know if that means actually leaving the govments bank account, but that is where Makewi got the number I think.

Prolly wise. What Scarlett is doing is making a meta argument that Obama has failed to succeed. Without regard to any analysis of the nuances that exist. But if someone is going to do that, then they have to accept the meta starting point for the Obama administration. Which is, that there were a lot more job losses then than now. If your going to argue this way you also have to accept the premise that less bad equals success.

Even if the meta numbers are still bad and in the negative. Dumb way to argue, but they are wingnuts.

Yes, you were quick to discover that the General did your homework for you.

But if you had bothered to follow the thread, much less read my original question with comprehension as an object, you would know that I asked you exactly how you arrived at the conclusion that the site listed “money in process” as “money already spent.”

Forcing others to do your homework for you again, eh? The recovery.gov site actually describes “Funds Paid Out” in its “Distributing and Reporting” graphic. Nothing about funds “spent” much less “we’re including ‘money in process’ in this amount.”

Using your usual apples/oranges reasoning, you are taking terms specific to the ProPublica site and extrapolating to the numbers at the government site.

You don’t explain – well let’s face it, you haven’t bothered to find out – how the government site arrives at its “Funds Paid Out” numbers. (Hint: start with the various definitions for “allocation, appropriation, award” etc. in the glossary)

Given the clarity of the ProPublica distinction between funds committed but still in the government’s bank account, and funds actually paid out the government’s bank account, we have a very clear idea of the amount of money that has actually been RECEIVED and put to use.

And then we get to the dishonesty of your claim. You see, one can’t really blame somebody for not creating jobs with money they haven’t gotten yet.

Well, unless one is a ideological hack that is.

6 million job losses in 2009. You live in a fantasy world.

Yes, let’s look at that. The link you provided had a January ’09 vid of Nouriel Roubini predicting 6 million lost in 2009. So that’s based on Boooooosh’s economy, shit-for-brains.

Actual (not predicted, idiot) job losses for 2009 through September were 4,137,000. The trend line for this year shows a decrease in the number of jobs lost each quarter; if the trend holds, the number of jobs lost in Q4 should be 250,000. Even if it worsens, so that 500,000 are lost, that will bring the annual total to approx. 4.65 million.

Let’s see, 6 mil loss predicted based on Bush’s economy, minus 4.65 mil actual loss as a result of Obama’s policies, means Obama’s policies will have saved 1.35 million jobs that Bush’s economy would have otherwise lost. And that assumes that Roubini was using a conservative estimate. If you extrapolate the 2+ Million jobs lost in Q1 (i.e. the Boooooosh “Plan”) to the entire year, that 8+ Million jobs, vs. the 4.65 Million.

So, imbecile, once again, your numbers are completely fucking wrong, you have no understanding of anything appearing on Recovery.org, and all your lying and disingenuous statements will not change the fact that the Booooosh economy was destroying the country, and Obama’s policies are only making things better.

No doubt you will now explain to us how 1 + 1 = 12, and so forth. You really need to go back to Kindergarten, so you can start learning about numbers, dummy.

OK, time for you to say “But-but-but-but $173.2 Billion”.

Thanks for the comic relief. Here’s a quarter, now go buy a clue, will you?

This is a pretty lazy post, you know? That’s what’s so disappointing about you. You could make much stronger arguments if you bothered to read (that’s what the glossary is for, you know). As it is, it just looks like you’re grabbing whatever graphic is easiest to read and not understanding how the terms are defined.

That’s why you’re getting called “shit for brains” because it’s rather insulting to the folks who’ve read recovery.org to throw up your arguments; it’s like you’re expecting people to react just to the words you’ve written and not expecting them to check out the original source material.

    Folks, don’t feed the trolls.

    Seriously.

Obama gets it. He has simply marginalized Limbaugh and Cheney and the other sociopathic trolls, and they are on their way out. They’re now reduced to leaping and gibbering and all but smearing feces on themselves to get attention…but nobody’s paying attention (except the 27% with diagnosable mental disorders).

The best way to deal with these creeps like BOB is just ignore ’em. These people live to get you riled up. Their little hearts go pit-a-pat every time someone references one of their trollicious posts. They jump up and down in the seats yelping, “Someone’s talking about me! Someone’s talking about meeeeeeeee!”

    Just ignore ’em.

When they post, just pass right over it, like a car passing over a speed bump. Pretty soon you won’t hear from those f*ckwits any more because they’ll realize you guys are no longer taking the bait and they’ll have moved on to a group of more gullible dupes to troll.
