Just finished the latest additions to the Lexicon, section I – P. I think we need more quotes being mean to Liberals. Also, I didn’t include Lucky Duckies, or John Stewart’s brilliant Leave It There (We’re Gonna Have to… ), or McNaughton, It’s A … the first because I’m not sure it’s necessary, and the latter two because I don’t have good links for them. Any assistance or opinions greatly appreciated.

Anne: http://www.mcnaughtonart.com, the very first paragraph on the home page is Jon McNaughton’s childhood dream of creative recognition. I like the “across a crowded room” part myself — very Rodgers and Hammerstein, that bit.
Incidentally, the accurate quote is “That’s [not it’s] a McNaughton!”

Oh, and sorry. It was very churlish of me not to cheer and huzzah for the fantastic work you, Anne Laurie your own self, have done and continue to do on the BJ Lexicon. You have wonderful patience, a great way with finding just exactly the right word, and a phenomenal sense of humour. I always enjoyed reading your posts anyhow, and when John asked you to be a front pager several months ago I thought he made a wise decision. The work you’ve done on the Lex alone is testament to his good judgement.

So far I seem to be all by my lonesome here (a very *uncrowded* room, this) so I’ll just note that it still feels weird *NOT* to be casting a vote for Little Bitsy first thing in the morning.

Apparently I’m being an insomniac. Just can’t seem to get tired enough to sleep yet for some weird reason.

First, let me add my note of congratulations to SD’s: your work has been nothing short of spectacular.

I got nothin’ for ya, Anne Laurie, but let me add my admiration of your hard and excellent work on the Lexicon to those above. In other news, I woke up today to the good news that Bush appointee USA Mary Beth Buchanan is finally resigning. The bad news is she is quitting to run against Jason Altmire-Blue Dog PA4th Dist. I’d much rather keep Jason, thank you very much. This is the crazy bitch that put Tommy Chong in federal prison for selling bongs (without bong water) and who finally crashed and burned by trying to do the same to Cyril Wecht. As my district went for McCain last Nov. and the Palin starbursts sparkle brightly here, I’m afraid. Very afraid.
WereBear
Thank you, Anne Laurie, for such yeoman work on the Lexicon.
I’m still on shock that 3 out of 10 Americans want Palin to run for President.
But we now know she would quit early.

I know ya’ll have limited control over the ads that appear but the SM-M ad is pissing me off.
Their inability to find names that aren’t snicker worthy is still strong though.

@WereBear: Keep in mind that at least .5 of those 3 is a Democrat hoping for her to run in order to further humiliate the GOP.
Is Tom Toles implying that Joe Lieberman is a zombie? That would explain a lot actually.

The New Meme will be “V.”
There, I’ve done it. I’ve put my prediction in. Someone in the wingnuttosphere will make the comparison between the Obama Administration and the “Vees.”
1. Over/under on who will do it first?
2. When?
3. How soon it percolates up into Beck and Limbaugh phantasmagorias?
4. At what point a Village Confabulator incorporates it into a column?
5. What should the shorthand for the Lexicon be?
Jack
Also, non-deep thought: for a set of persons so critical of the “liberal” media, conservatives sure are dependent on its cycles for their worldview, and the latest “most salient comparisons, ever.”
Entering into evidence: well, every news cycle.
Fulcanelli
Truly great job on the BJ lexicon Anne-Laurie. That you managed to work in three of my favorite quotes in the definition of ‘conservative’ was a thing of beauty that brought a tear to my eye.
I do hope you made a back up this time…

So when you gonna fire up “Prince of Darkness” for a re-run?

I went back to sleep for a while, so maybe I’m just being early-morning stupid, but what is “V” or “Vee” and why is it going to become the new meme? Veteran? Vulcan? Vampire? Venezuelan? Please help a poor ignorant sleepy person here. Thanks!
Jack
@SiubhanDuinne:
ABC’s reboot of the “V” series. Aliens come disguised as humans, offer to solve world problems, but really just want to do bad things to people.
Here’s ABC’s trailer:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQoSCEMzJYE
Not political at all, just good old fashioned space opera.
But, I doubt that Confabulists can resist the tailor-made invitation to “ominous parallels.”

The President will today sign a 4-year extension of the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Act. None of this matters unless he says “gay” though.

Nice. The Pennsylvania crooked judges case ends well:
“Given the above decision and discussion, this Court now approves of Judge Grim’s recommendation that, for all cases in which Ciavarella entered adjudications of delinquency or consent decrees between January 1, 2003 and May 31, 2008, orders shall be entered vacating those adjudications and consent decrees, regardless of whether the juvenile was represented by counsel. See In Interest of
McFall, 617 A.2d 707 (Pa. 1992). We note that the parties are in agreement that this particular remedial measure is proper; indeed, the Commonwealth continues to
concede as much, notwithstanding its request to remand.
This Court is aware, of course, that some juveniles appeared before Ciavarella with counsel and were not committed to either of the PA Child Care facilities. We agree
with the parties and Judge Grim, however, that those cases are no less tainted by Ciavarella having presided. Judge Grim refers to the “pall” that was cast over all
juvenile matters presided over by Ciavarella, given his financial interest, and his conduct in cases where juveniles proceeded without counsel. We fully agree that, given the
nature and extent of the taint, this Court simply cannot have confidence that any juvenile matter adjudicated by Ciavarella during this period was tried in a fair and
impartial manner.”
Now they have to go after the prosecutors and defense who stood there like potted plants and said nothing while this was going on.

Jack — thanks. I have heard of, and I think seen reference on these threads, to “V” but I’ve never watched it. From the description, not a genre that I’m attracted to (no offense to any fans). But your post now makes sense to me and I expect you’re right in your prediction.

The original “V” series scared the bejesus outa me when I was a kid. Which means I’ll give the new series its day in court, just to see just how much Barack Obama is like an alien. Is he mostly like an alien or totally like an alien?

The 101st Fighting Chairborne, according to DKos, was originally the 101st Fighting Keyboarders, as referenced on this blog in May of 2004:

There was also a hilarious faux documentary, The War of the Words-the story of the 101st Fighting Keyboarders by Paul H. Henry, that appeared in 2006. Unfortunately, it’s no longer available, but you can watch the trailer here:

Do you have permission from Toles or the Washington Post to reprint that copyrighted cartoon? Bloggers are always getting upset when the MSM refers to them as parasites, but that description seems appropriate here – the Post paid for that cartoon, and you’re reprinting it without any added comment or even a link. And selling ads around it.

Something tells me that Gibbs discussion with Fox News did not go as planned.

@Demo Woman:
“[Lieberman] still wants to be a part of the Democratic Party although he is a registered independent,” Harkin said. “He wants to caucus with us and, of course, he enjoys his chairmanship of the [Homeland Security] committee because of the indulgence of the Democratic Caucus. So, I’m sure all of those things will cross his mind before the final vote.”
Very funny. That was subtle, huh?
It would be a darn shame if anything….happened to that chairmanship…
lol
The original V was meant to be a sci-fi version of “It can’t happen here”. The aliens were modeled after Nazis.
I don’t know how much of that remains in the remake but if there’s Nazis involved, they’ll be hard pressed to resist making comparisons.
Mr Furious
@Mark: It’s properly identified and attributed right in the artwork, complete with copyright.
They put it online in the public sphere, and this usage would qualify as editorial, not commercial.
Anne should probably give a link as a cya move/courtesy, though.

Does anyone have any idea why ABC News repeatedly stated the cost of the House Health Care Bill would be $1.06 trillion, when the CBO has estimated $894 billion?
And what’s with this bit of hypothetical scare-mongering about successful HCR potentially killing preemies?
Sort of makes me feel that ABC/Disney is not on our side in this matter…
Mr Furious
@Mark: Actually, upon further review, it’s pretty much a cut-and-paste, with no context or commentary, that might tip it the other way. Technically, it’s probably a no-no.
But, WaPo and other papers would be stupid to try and wall off content and/or prevent this type of reprinting and sourcing.

@WereBear: Ummm… did you see the poll on political leanings of newschannels? 14 percent perceive Fox as being mostly liberal. What kind of world must they live in?

@kay: Lieberman also stated that he will campaign for some Republicans in 2010 and has not ruled out running as a Republican in 2012.
I can understand Reid’s statements in support of Joe because anything else would be on the news 24/7. Lieberman doesn’t need anymore press. By the way he will be on Face The Nation on Sunday. The news media likes to alternate between McCain, Graham and Lieberman.

Anne,
Re Lucky Duckies: I think it merits an entry, if only to edumacate those who may not realize the term was originally used in non-ironic fashion by the Wall Street Journal in order to complain that the poor do not pay enough in taxes. You know, because life below the poverty line is one big party.

@Demo Woman:
My personal opinion? It’s his last term. No Democrat is going to buy his self-serving bullshit twice. He stated repeatedly in 2006 that he would back health care reform, and they trusted him. He lied.
He better find some more Republicans in Connecticut.

– You can’t rip off copyrighted material just because you identify and attribute it. In fact, that’s almost worse – the copyright mark is acknowledging to the world that this is protected content that has been taken.
– Putting something online is not the same as putting it in the public domain.
– What possible benefit could the Post get from Anne doing a copy and paste job on the cartoon it paid for?

Is “I am aware of all internet traditions” in the lexicon? It is a meme that was not born here but definately grew up here.
raptusregaliter
I don’t know if I saw the meme here first, but the phrase “Steady Village Employment” has been rolling around in my head for weeks.
Steady Village Employment: Refers to the constellation of jobs-for-life opportunities afforded to those who have a knack for being consistently wrong. If your predictions never seem to pan out, or if your worldview is embraced by less than 20% of the general population, then you too might be able to join the ranks of George Will, Cokie Roberts, Bill Kristol, and Liz Cheney on various Sunday morning talk shows, political roundtables, and cable TV shoutfests. Benefits include public recognition, book deals, and better tables at restaurants, but the cherry on top is that you’ll never have to answer for your mistakes. This is because the Villagers always protect their own.
tomvox1
@Demo Woman:
I think Lieberman will run as a Republican the next time around, on the platform of “I was the guy who killed (or tried to) government health care.” Personally, I don’t see how this will work in either the primary, where he would face a tea-bagger, or the general, where Lamont will kick his ass. Either way, he will wind up being the most loathed Senator in recent memory (if he isn’t already) but I’m sure with his Kristol-like political instincts, it all makes perfect sense to him. Quel douche.

Fine by me! That’s my last name. Just got back from researching my family tree in Scotland, back to the 17th century so far. Toured a castle our clan built on Loch Fyne, wandered graveyards in Stirling and Perth (found one distant relative), met the clan chieftan at a reunion in Edinburgh.
It’s a shame about this John character. Are you sure he’s not a Campbell?

@tomvox1: I hadn’t really known much about Lieberman before Al Gore picked him as his running mate in 2000. I thought at the time he was a decent pick, not great, but not horrible by any means. But the more I see what a flaming a-hole he is, the more I wonder whether under other circumstances we might be thinking of Gore (for his VP pick) the same way we think today of McCain (for his).
Not that Lieberman is a quitter. And I do actually believe he reads the occasional newspaper.

I notice there is no definition in the lexicon for Ronaldus Magnus. I’ll take a whack at it:
Ronaldus Magnus — Honorific bestowed upon Ronald Reagan in the Republican National Committee’s “GOP Heroes” page on GOP.com, apparently without irony. (Has since been removed.) Given GOP criticism of excessive hero worship of President Obama, Talking Points Memo has speculated that the title may have been inserted by hackers for irony, although easily snarkable Republican hero worship is certainly nothing new (see Starbursts).
