Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

No Kings: Americans standing in the way of bad history saying “Oh, Fuck No!”

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

People are complicated. Love is not.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

Hell hath no fury like a farmer bankrupted.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

So very ready.

This really is a full service blog.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

A tremendous foreign policy asset… to all of our adversaries.

We will not go quietly into the night; we will not vanish without a fight.

Quote tweet friends, screenshot enemies.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

I really wish Steve Gilliard were here today, because only he could do full justice to both Bloomberg’s victory and Corzine’s failure. And while Mr. Gilliard was, IIRC, no fan of Mayor Bloomberg, he would certainly have had some useful if excoriating advice for those goo-goos who are now shocked, shocked that a rich person could be rewarded by New York City voters for a blatant attempt to buy his way into keeping office.

Also (ergo?), Fuck The Fucking Yankees…

I’ve been mostly ignoring the postseason; I’m still recovering from the shock of the Detroit Tigers collapse and the epic one-game playoff against the Twins.

Around here, the election news was mostly dominated by the 58-42 defeat of an effort to raise more property taxes for school funding, which took a huge whack in the state budget for the year which has already started. (The state can no longer tell the K-12s and the universities how much money is coming before the start of the school year, which makes educational budgeting an exercise in guesswork.) Mid-school-year teacher layoffs look inevitable. “Michissippi,” we’re going to rename the state.

Hey, Anne Laurie, re: music: did you see my earlier response about the new Poozies album? (Folk music, five women, Scotland, for those who don’t know them, which is just about everybody in America…)

Only the FTFY threads, JSF. I’m not interested in sports, but I really really miss reading Steve Gilliard, who hated the Yankees with the burning fervour only possible to an NYC native. So whenever the World Series intrusion into the general newscasts reminds me about Steinbrenners’ Steroid Stooges, I post FTFY open threads in Mr. Gilliard’s memory, since I was also born in the Bronx, but to a working-class Irish family where cherishing grievances was the preferred memorial.

Anne Laurie in comment 37:: I got my copy of the Poozies’ album “Yellow Like Sunshine” from MusicScotland.com There really aren’t many US-based sources left for folk-ish music from Ireland, Scotland and England. I’ve still got Elderly Instruments available to me, and I am very fond of cdroots.com (where the proprietor is a pal), but beyond what those two sources might have, I just look for overseas sellers.

re: the Poozies:: the big news is that Sally Barker came back after 12 years of maternity leave, and she punched things up nicely. Plus, the band now has both an accordion player and a fiddle player, as it was originally conceived.

(Ya, we should take it to e-mail. For the rest of you: Anne Laurie and I are discussing a folkish band we know from 15 years ago. Five women, two harps, guitar accordion and fiddle. http://www.poozies.co.uk and free streaming samples available at myspace.com/poozies, where perhaps the song “Another Train” might push some personal/political buttons…)

    More to Anne Laurie:
If you want to split your Music Scotland shipping cost across two CDs, have a look at Gaelic singer Julie Fowlis. “Cuildh” was a great album, and her new one is “Uam,” and I have only heard some of that one on the BBC internet radio shows.

OK, enough about our obscure musical interests…

Glad Jack is home. There is nothing like that…

My old cat Bill got out a couple of days ago ( He is over 18) I usually keep him in. He has advanced arthritis and is just slow. Out here in the rural area — we have lots of critters that Bill could not handle. He was not gone long but I was frantic and totally unglued. He came back after a day, bedraggled but with no injuries, thank goodness..

I cannot express my emotions on his return. Somewhere between prodigal son and something very deep in my childhood that had to do with boundless joy and love.

He was kind of a mess and his fur is still kinked up in places. Have to get him to a groomer to shampoo and clip — although he has never had that and I expect major — major resistance…

    Gail Collins is back:

In Ohio, citizens marched to the polls on Tuesday and voted to allow gambling casinos in the state. This was a obviously a message to President Obama that independent voters are not happy with the way the health care bill is going. Really, I don’t see how else you can interpret it. Ohioans were looking forward to the lower insurance costs that would come with a robust public option, and if the president can’t deliver, they’re planning to pay their future medical bills with their winnings at the roulette wheel.

    —

New Jersey was even worse. The defeat of Gov. Jon Corzine made it clear that the young and minority voters who turned out for Obama will not necessarily show up at the polls in order to re-elect an uncharismatic former Wall Street big shot who failed to deliver on his most important campaign promises while serving as the public face of a state party that specializes in getting indicted.

Thing is, last year seemed to be a bellwether. Then…Yanks spent untold millions to do what they always do: buy a team rather than grow a team. They just happened to spend more, and on players they knew other teams loved and needed more than the Yanks really did.

That’s honestly why I fell in love with the Rays after ’08, and still stick with ’em after this mediocre (yet still better than their decade of awfulness before): they actually invest and grow a team, even if it took years to pay dividends (just not about to say that out loud, living in the NYC metro area).

Oh hell, you whiners – you could be rooting for the Tigers and the Browns. Masochism, not for the faint of …

On a sadder note, our 13 yr cat has been gone for nearly 3 weeks. I will miss her.

I’ll just say, in response to FTFY, YFTW.

I’ll raise my first glass tonight to the memory of Mr. Gilliard, and my second to celebrate.

    @Ed in NJ:

All you haters can go blow. We’re gonna enjoy this, especially being in central jersey, right above the line that separates us from the obnoxious Philly fans who thought this WS was a gimme for them.

Two words – Chris. Christie. Enjoy that Yankees win, man.

This post isn’t political. It’s about Emmylou Harris. Never met the lady, but once when I was a teen*, I was on the street just beside of UNC-G at night looking for a place to hang out, and there was really nice music coming out of what was either a club of some sort or a restaurant, I don’t really remember exactly. I started to go in but then saw a sign that said “Cover Charge Fifty Cents”. At the time, cover charges were pretty rare and I went ballistic saying “I will NEVER pay FIFTY CENTS to see some singer. Never”. Later on I found out it was Emmylou Harris.

*This was long, long time ago in a universe far, far away.

@arguingwithsignposts: I’m sorry to hear about this, arguing. I’m sending you and her some strong vibes. How are you doing?

@Chuck Butcher: Aw, what a beautiful girl she is. My deepest condolences on your loss. Play freely on the other side, Marlin.

FTFY but expect more of the same until baseball gets a real commissioner and a salary cap like the other major sports have.

Admittedly I don’t give a hoot about sports, but doesn’t every pro team buy its “arms”?

The Yankees spend more than double the second highest payroll.
