A friend just emailed me a YouTube of “Lovely Day”; I was going go to with that and write “may the headwinds be always at your back”. But this is by far the finest Bill Withers video on the internets.

Doug, you have to check out Use Me that was recorded by Better Than Ezra. I’m a believer in the idea that no cover tune can ever be better than the original, simply because of the passion put into the original. Musically? I’ve heard a lot of better covers in mah day.

If you want a good laugh, read the latest Ted Wilson at The Rumpus. He’s reviewing the Bible, and it’s hilarious.

@funluvn: Have you heard Johnny Cash’s cover of “Personal Jesus”? No disrespect to Depeche Mode, but Cash owned that song once he did it.

I like the original better, but it’s damned impressive for a bunch of white hipsters. I don’t know what they put the in the gumbo down there, but whatever it is, it works.

Ain’t No Sunshine When She’s Gone
My personal fav — from same session

@Incertus:
I may take heat for it but Marilyn Manson’s cover of that song, as well as the other covers he’s done were really good.

@licensed to kill time: Trying again. Ted Wilson Reviews the World might be one of the funniest things we’ve done at The Rumpus.

Boy howdy, would’ve loved to see that serious discussion. The saying “You can’t have a battle of wits with an unarmed man” comes to mind.

That might be the finest Bill Withers video, but the finest Bill Withers song is “Kissing My Love.”

MW2 for PS3 is pretty good so far. Very involving.

With the “BJ, the Swimsuit Edition” ad on the upper left hand and the “Tunti Toy Store” ad on the upper right hand I’m beginning to wonder if this is a blog with which I should have well been associated to.
Also.

I’m gonna guess that it was the coin Czar.

Wasn’t it always on the edge?@gocart mozart:
Wasn’t it always on the edge? At least he didn’t change it to “In Allah We Trust” because that would be theocratic.

Joe Lieberman’s douchebag quote of the day
Asked if he saw any “wiggle room” on his pledge — say, a trigger for example — Joe Lieberman said he “felt like standing firm on this one.” “I don’t feel like wiggling,” he said.

The entirety of Them Crooked Vultures debut album is up on YouTube. The phrase “sick-tight” comes to mind.

Palin is tripling down on insanity. She needs to be fitted for a straitjacket.

Oh that is so damn good.

@JK: Ya know, when all the hoopla was going on about letting JL keep his Chair status, caucus with the Dems, Harry Reid is weak stuff was going on I thought hey, everyone should just calm down,
Man oh man. I was wrong. Huge wrong. Gross conceptual error wrong.
My apologies.
I will try not to be fooled again.

Great tune – the only version I had ever heard was Grace Jones’ cover. What a shame it is not on youtube.

Full-on music geekage, from this record store lifer:
Bill Withers’ first two albums (1971’s Just as I am and 1972’s Still Bill) are absolute masterpieces of intelligent soul, and can be found back to back on a single CD (as an Australian import on the Raven label) in better music emporiums.
And his 1973 double album Bill Withers Live at Carnegie Hall is easily one of the finest concert recordings ever, with a stellar band and several killer songs that Bill never took to the studio. Great sound, compelling stage patter… even the audience singalong part is awesome. And you can get it on CD for less than ten bucks.

I take 20 minutes to check back in with politics and the world. I’m gonna go back to blowing shit up. It seems downright utopian compared to what’s going on out there.
On xbl, my gamertag is sxfreelancerxs, in case anyone else is taking a break to catch up on their BJ.

Cash was great for that — putting his own indelible stamp on anything he covered. (Exhibit A: “Rusty Cage”. Exhibit B: “Hurt”)

you know, Bill Withers is from West Virginia.

@General Winfield Stuck:
Amen, Stuck, but I must put in a word for “Grandma’s Hands.”
And note that on the original album cut my man Stephen Stills added some tasty lead guitar. That is all.

Nothing is better than this version of “Harlem”.

A second on granma’s hands. One of the best tunes ever.

Thanks Doug. That was a nice way to cap my night.

This really is the best Withers video.

Good tune. Thanks.
