Gonna get a new post after every drink?

I concur John, it never gets old. It just gets better.

OT: Yep, seems like Lou was forced Out!
Midnight Marauder
@lamh31:
Interesting. Although what a stupid headline. “In Surprise, Lou Dobbs Quits CNN.” A surprise? What fucking definition of the word “surprise” are you working with, New York Times? What’s next?
“In Surprise, Michael Steele Opens Mouth, Says Stupid Things”
“In Surprise, Sarah Palin Finds Governing “Hard Work”
“In Surprise, People Who Enjoy Oxygen Find Republican Policies Unappealing”
Zam
I think South Park is doing a Beck parody
Zam
@Zam: or I guess if it’s Cartman it’s Rush
Morbo
Oh man, this episode of South Park is going to be awesome…
mai naem
Can somebody please pull the same thing on Joe Lieberman? Ofcourse with Holy Joe, it’ll just fly over his head.

@Zam: I was about to post on this. It’s fracking hilarious!”

The best is that Markos is so upbeat through the exchange. No yelling, no frustration. He just slays Tancredo with a smile. I wish someone had the opportunity to give Sarah Palin this treatment during the campaign.
JenJen
It really does get funnier every time I watch it. Gotta love that Tancredo seems to feel entitled to an apology when all Markos did was “straight up” call him a draft dodging war supporting hypocrite. Isn’t Tancredo the one who should be apologizing?
Litlebritdifrnt
BTW did anyone else see Orly’s epic fail of a protest of Bill O’Reilly today, she had about 20 protesters if that. Classic.
SmilingPolitely
I was wracking my brains out trying to figure out who it was that Markos reminds me of…
Jon Cryer!
It’s Duckie!

Oh man, these are my favorite nights on Balloon Juice. Can’t wait for the next post.

Hey! Thinking about buying a camcorder both myself and my 5 yr old can use.
Looking at this:
Sony Handycam HDR XR520V 240GB
Sony Style
(don’t let the 5 yr old part fool you, he’s been running a 10MP digi cam for a year now with aplomb)
Anyone have a suggestion as to a good HD camcorder with an LCD viewscreen and portability.
Corner Stone
@beltane: I’m not a big fan of Kos but he never shows up anywhere without a big smile on his face.
That’s a weapon all in itself, especially against a scum of the earth like TT.
Sentient Puddle
+0, because I’m not feeling well enough to have one. On one hand, I hate you. On another, drink one (or four) for me.
Ash Can
LOLZ! This is a damn fine Veterans’ Day post.
Alan
South Park is a must see tonight. Catch the replay at Midnight (ET).
Existenz
Can someone tell me what the “+4” and “+6” numbers are all about? Is it how many drinks the blogger has had before blogging?
This is one internet tradition I am not familiar with.
Litlebritdifrnt
Hey Existenz welcome to BJ as well as PJ. Nice to see you!

+1 … but it’s Costo beer.
seriously. brewed in the NY brewery in Utica.
Not bad. $19 a case, and it has flavor.
Tonight was the Hefeweizen.

I wish we had more surrogates like this on the air. Unfortunately there are too many Besty Mcaughey’s out there who can’t be forced to storm off.
Do you think Bachmann is self-aware enough to storm off?
Frankly, I don’t care anymore. The Republicans are lighting themselves on fire, and have lost complete control of their message, their party and with it, their electoral fortunes.
Yes, a depressingly large segment of the population will vote Republican no matter what, but it’s still 25-30% (nationally), and time is not on their side.
I suppose running out the clock isn’t the best Democratic strategy, but given the crop of fools we have elected, it’s better than the alternative (them trying anything).
Genine
Existenz-
+number does mean the number of drinks the blogger has had. There is also a reference for this in the BJ Lexicon.
I hope that helps. :-) (If someone did not beat me to it in the time it took to write this)
Anne Laurie
@Existenz: Check the Lexicon (A-H)!

Damn … #21 made me remember again that this was the first Vets Day that I don’t get to call my WWII vet dad (forward observer) and wish him a happy Vets day.
Going to probably end up going to +3 before I can fall asleep tonight.

This night is going to be fun.
/going to go get +1 myself

@beltane:
The whole sequence is political ju-jitsu at its finest. Markos knows Tancredo is going to go there, and when he does, just slices him into ribbons.
The cuts are rapier like, sharp, quick, and deadly. Tancredo never saw the cuts that killed him.
MBSS
points scoring details please.
what constitutes a +1? one 12oz beer or one shot?
Ailuridae
@Balconesfault:
Are they brewing their own house label or is it Saranac of something from Matt’s?
Ailuridae +4 (Winter Skal from Capital) and will likely be +12 by the end of the night (2 more of the Skal and a sixer of Edmund Fitzgerald)
Also, Dragon Age is just too good.
PsiFighter37
@ Zam: It’s a Wednesday, and fact remains that I am alone at +14.
Hell, even the folks at GOS are befuddled.
MikeJ
I’m only at +4. Two bourbons, two vin blanc (ordinaire). But I’ll have another glass or two, but drop in some of the pom seeds from my elitist leftist dinner, arugula and pomegranate salad.

@Corner Stone:
Canon’s Vixia line is pretty good, with an external mic input and headphone output. And it’s a heckuva lot cheaper than that sony.
Litlebritdifrnt
@Balconesfault:
My WWII vet daddy died in 96, not a vets day goes by that I don’t think about him. I will never forget the Dunkirk anniversary when I went back with him, to all areas of France and Belgium and we visited the places he fought. We were in the tiny villiage of Ypres, there is a cemetary there, filled with British soldiers, who were hiding in a barn, being hid by the locals. The germans came in and machine gunned them all. I will never forget my daddy looking at the grave stones and saying “they should never have been here” they were basically making their way to the coast and were lost. One of the villagers saved several men by hiding them in her house. She is now a local hero and during that celebration she was wheeled down the street to great applause. It was the most amazing feeling.
Morbo
Generally have a beer a night unless I go out, but on Wednesday nights I watch One Piece and drink wine. Should end up around +6 or 7 when it’s all said and done.
Ash Can
@Ailuridae: Ooh. Capital and Edmund Fitzgerald? Yum!
AngusTheGodOfMeat
Tancredo is too funny.

@MBSS:
As far as I know, both would be equal as a +1.

I posted that five days straight on my Facebook page. Can’t get enough!

Does half a cup of coffee count as + anything? I had to stay awake for a class tonight. Unfortunately, it’ll probably keep me awake much longer than I’d like.
BigSwami
+0. I took the 5th precept. Times like this make me miss a couple of glasses of vino tinto de españa. Oh well.
I am frequently amazed at how secure Republican congressmen feel about speaking authoritatively (i.e., directly from the butthole) on military matters, considering how few of them ever enlisted. They’ve somehow trained themselves to believe that if you give the Pentagon everything they ever ask for and more, no one will ever call you on your bullshit.

@Balconesfault: Yeah, I’m an army brat. The old soldier’s gone 15 years now, but I still think of him every November (his birthday and death day are in November too). Still can’t watch any movie about Viet Nam, but glad he made it back from there in one piece.
J. Michael Neal
Oh, man, I’d never seen this. Rush, backstage at the Colbert Report, play Rock Band. Tom Sawyer, of course.
They fail.
SIA aka ScreamingInAtlanta
And I haven’t had a drink since January 1980 and you call all go to hell! (I mean that in the kindest way possible).

Working on +3 now. It was +2 when I started typing this, but got caught up in a conversation.

Hey, the final, last episode of the original Iron Chef is on FLN right now, “King of Iron Chefs”.

@PsiFighter37: I’d be dead before I got to +14.
Ailuridae
@Ash Can:
Yep. Living in Chicago has some huge advantages for more than an occasional drinker of good beer. Any good to great national brand is here (Sierra, Anchor) and then most of the small to mid-sized regional brands within a 6 hour train ride are here as well. So when I went to the store today I had the following 6 pack options between 8 and 11 dollars
Sierra Pale, Sierra Porter, Anchor Steam, Anchor Porter 9
All Great Lakes products 9.50
Brooklyn East India Pale 10
Winter Skal 10.50 (but my corner store only gets Capital’s regionals for some unknown reason)
Goose Island, Bells Two Floyds and Three Brothers main lines -11
Assorted Premium beers for 12 plus as well as Dogfish head 4 packs
And if you know anything about Chicago this bar is a slashie one of Chicago’s awesome drinking town idiosyncracies.
Ailuridae +6

Apparently I just got 2 free drinks. From thefun bartender. In appreciation I’m going to go +4

SIA aka ScreamingInAtlanta
@Chuck Butcher: Yo Brother
@Midnight Marauder: Thanks MM!
Corner Stone
@arguingwithsignposts: I saw those, and as I have a Canon SLR with a lot of prime lenses I have considered that line. Just because I dig them.
Thanks
Ash Can
@Ailuridae:
Boy howdy. Hopleaf, Map Room, Goose Island… And when we need to stock the fridge, Binny’s fills the bill just fine. Hell, the husband picked up a couple of Belgians just a few days ago at a fucking northwest-side Osco, for crap’s sake. And then, like you say, there are the local breweries. A few in Illinois, a bunch in Wisconsin, some dandies in Indiana (including Three Floyds), and Bell’s in Kalamazoo…
I’d better stop. I’m gaining weight just talking about it.
BigSwami
@Ash Can:
Oh god, I used to live right across the street from the Clark & Halsted Binny’s. Those gentlemen introduced me to some very good booze.
You’re making me cry.

@Ash Can: Wisconsin=New Glarus. Their Spotted Cow is THE summer brew of choice.
JenJen
Thanks to everyone who suggested we catch the South Park repeat at midnight. Kill Smurfs!!
JenJen +4
Ash Can
@erlking: Spotted Cow is excellent, but my favorite Wisconsin summer beer is Capital’s Island Wheat, especially when I get it ice cold, on tap, in Door County. Mm-mm, good!
Skullduggery
@erlking: Whenever I visit my parents in Wisconsin, my friends make me bring at least one or two cases of Spotted Cow back for them (and some of Lake Louie’s Kiss the Lips). And cheese curds.
rikyrah
it is hilarious, and it’s always good to see one of these mofos on the run.
binz
That’s a fine thing to see and hear on Veterans Day. Markos you rock!
And fuck Tancredo. Coward. Yet another fucking chickenhawk gooper asshole talking about gub’mint’s the problem this, gub’minit’s the problem that, while taking a gub’mint paycheck and enjoying gub’mint provided health care that is among the best on the planet.
Fuck Tancredo. Fucking blowdried helmet-haired bonerpill popping fake-tanned asshole. Just look at that greasy little shitstain and you know.

@lamh31: Good riddance to bad trash, as my grandmother used to say. Lou Dobbs will not play an important part in the future of America. Thank you very much.
Dr. Loveless
Apparently Carrie Prejean threatened to storm off of Larry King’s show as well. I sense a trend developing here.
Thadeus Horne
@Dave C: Ya shouldn’t let an education get in the way of your drinking. Just no excuse.
Thadeus Horne
@MBSS: Sure…sounds good to me.
Thadeus Horne
@SIA aka ScreamingInAtlanta: Nobody made it back from that clusterfuck in one piece. Not trying to diss what you are saying, but speaking from personal experience, nobody came back the same person that they were when they left home.
Thadeus Horne
Crap!! I’m tired of being the last poster. WTF??
binz
@Ash Can:
Yeah, I’ll never turn down a cold Island Wheat in summer.
My fave summer beers here in the Cheeseheadhomeland are Island Wheat. Land Shark. Red Stripe. Pacifico (mostly for sentimental reasons). And any Great-Lakes-region microbrew Kolsch.
Also, I’ll drink any Capitol Brewery or Bells Brewery’s lighter offerings in hot humid weather, partly for loyalty reasons (I live within a few miles of Capitol Brewery, and I have actually capped some bottles for Bells, way back when the the brewery was by the tracks in downtown Kalamazoo.
As for Spotted Cow, yeah yeah. Everyone loves New Glarus’ Spotted Cow. It’s really good. But for summer if it’s hot and humid enough for Kolsch-drinkin’ weather, I prefer New Glarus’ Local Yokel.
I love Guiness, I love scotch ales, I love dark beers. But in hot-n-sticky as hell summers of the great white north…my preferences shift.
Seasonal. Local.
Beauty, eh? Like Angels.

Okay, I’ll be last. +4.something.

@Chuck Butcher:
True dat.
I’m sympathizing with Cole’s mini-meltdown on Veterans Day. Sometimes the wildness/weirdness just takes you on a weeknight and you go with it.
For me, tonight it’s rain and wind outside. Always energizes me, regardless of the time.
contract3D
James Wolcott, one of the greats in my personal Pantheon of Snark (*) gave a shout-out to this video as well:
(*) Don’t get a swelled head Mr. Cole, but I’ve actually used the same phrase to describe, well, you.
Sam
Y’know what? You shouldn’t be proud of, or entertained by, this clip. Here’s why:
– Markos blew his answer. The right answer is, “I’m a veteran and I love my health care, like all the veterans who consistently rate VA healthcare the best in America.” Tancredo’s just wrong, and Markos knows this. And, of course, the satisfaction rates for Medicare/Medicaid also outstrip satisfaction rates for private health care. Instead of addressing the facts, Markos took a cheap shot at Tancredo, which compromises his credibility. Sure, you might enjoy a high-five or two with your liberal pal, but it wasn’t classy, it wasn’t smart, and it wasn’t effective.
– What’s with all the chickenhawkery? What’s the point? There are people out there who haven’t gone to war who want to send others to war, and there are people out there who HAVE gone to war who want to; there are people out there of both stripes who DON’T want to send other people to war. Here’s a thought experiment: what if GWB had actually fought in Vietnam? Would it have improved his wisdom about what to do in the Middle East? Maybe. Would it have improved his credibility? If the equation is “been to war” == “higher credibility”, then the answer seems to be, definitely. So if GWB weren’t a chickenhawk, he MIGHT have been wiser, but he’d DEFINITELY have had more credibility. Does anybody here want to take that bet? Not me.
The chickenhawk thing is a distractor – it’s just something to beat someone over the head with. Plus, it implicitly reinforces the stereotype that you have to have been to war to have credibility about it, which isn’t going to serve Obama very well as he makes decisions about Afghanistan.
So enough with the high fives, folks. Back to work.
