Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I desperately hope that, yet again, i am wrong.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

They punch you in the face and then start crying because their fist hurts.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls 2 years from now.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

Michigan is a great lesson for Dems everywhere: when you have power…use it!

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

With all due respect and assumptions of good faith, please fuck off into the sun.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

Dumb motherfuckers cannot understand a consequence that most 4 year olds have fully sorted out.

If rights aren’t universal, they are privilege, not rights.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Disappointing to see gov. newsom with his finger to the wind.

Nothing says ‘pro-life’ like letting children go hungry.

He really is that stupid.

“Months ago the president of CNN/U.S., Jonathan Klein, spelled out two options for Lou Dobbs, the channel’s most outspoken anchor. Mr. Dobbs could vent his opinions on radio and anchor an objective newscast on television, or he could leave CNN altogether.”

The best is that Markos is so upbeat through the exchange. No yelling, no frustration. He just slays Tancredo with a smile. I wish someone had the opportunity to give Sarah Palin this treatment during the campaign.

    Looking at this:
    Sony Handycam HDR XR520V 240GB
    Sony Style

(don’t let the 5 yr old part fool you, he’s been running a 10MP digi cam for a year now with aplomb)

I wish we had more surrogates like this on the air. Unfortunately there are too many Besty Mcaughey’s out there who can’t be forced to storm off.

Do you think Bachmann is self-aware enough to storm off?

Frankly, I don’t care anymore. The Republicans are lighting themselves on fire, and have lost complete control of their message, their party and with it, their electoral fortunes.

Yes, a depressingly large segment of the population will vote Republican no matter what, but it’s still 25-30% (nationally), and time is not on their side.

I suppose running out the clock isn’t the best Democratic strategy, but given the crop of fools we have elected, it’s better than the alternative (them trying anything).

My WWII vet daddy died in 96, not a vets day goes by that I don’t think about him. I will never forget the Dunkirk anniversary when I went back with him, to all areas of France and Belgium and we visited the places he fought. We were in the tiny villiage of Ypres, there is a cemetary there, filled with British soldiers, who were hiding in a barn, being hid by the locals. The germans came in and machine gunned them all. I will never forget my daddy looking at the grave stones and saying “they should never have been here” they were basically making their way to the coast and were lost. One of the villagers saved several men by hiding them in her house. She is now a local hero and during that celebration she was wheeled down the street to great applause. It was the most amazing feeling.

Yep. Living in Chicago has some huge advantages for more than an occasional drinker of good beer. Any good to great national brand is here (Sierra, Anchor) and then most of the small to mid-sized regional brands within a 6 hour train ride are here as well. So when I went to the store today I had the following 6 pack options between 8 and 11 dollars

Sierra Pale, Sierra Porter, Anchor Steam, Anchor Porter 9
    All Great Lakes products 9.50
    Brooklyn East India Pale 10
Winter Skal 10.50 (but my corner store only gets Capital’s regionals for some unknown reason)
Goose Island, Bells Two Floyds and Three Brothers main lines -11

@erlking: Spotted Cow is excellent, but my favorite Wisconsin summer beer is Capital’s Island Wheat, especially when I get it ice cold, on tap, in Door County. Mm-mm, good!

@erlking: Whenever I visit my parents in Wisconsin, my friends make me bring at least one or two cases of Spotted Cow back for them (and some of Lake Louie’s Kiss the Lips). And cheese curds.

I’m not pretending anything. I told you straight up.

That’s a fine thing to see and hear on Veterans Day. Markos you rock!

And fuck Tancredo. Coward. Yet another fucking chickenhawk gooper asshole talking about gub’mint’s the problem this, gub’minit’s the problem that, while taking a gub’mint paycheck and enjoying gub’mint provided health care that is among the best on the planet.

Fuck Tancredo. Fucking blowdried helmet-haired bonerpill popping fake-tanned asshole. Just look at that greasy little shitstain and you know.

Yeah, I’ll never turn down a cold Island Wheat in summer.

My fave summer beers here in the Cheeseheadhomeland are Island Wheat. Land Shark. Red Stripe. Pacifico (mostly for sentimental reasons). And any Great-Lakes-region microbrew Kolsch.

Also, I’ll drink any Capitol Brewery or Bells Brewery’s lighter offerings in hot humid weather, partly for loyalty reasons (I live within a few miles of Capitol Brewery, and I have actually capped some bottles for Bells, way back when the the brewery was by the tracks in downtown Kalamazoo.

As for Spotted Cow, yeah yeah. Everyone loves New Glarus’ Spotted Cow. It’s really good. But for summer if it’s hot and humid enough for Kolsch-drinkin’ weather, I prefer New Glarus’ Local Yokel.

I love Guiness, I love scotch ales, I love dark beers. But in hot-n-sticky as hell summers of the great white north…my preferences shift.

    Seasonal. Local.

    Beauty, eh? Like Angels.

    True dat.

I’m sympathizing with Cole’s mini-meltdown on Veterans Day. Sometimes the wildness/weirdness just takes you on a weeknight and you go with it.

For me, tonight it’s rain and wind outside. Always energizes me, regardless of the time.

James Wolcott, one of the greats in my personal Pantheon of Snark (*) gave a shout-out to this video as well:

Armed with nothing more than a bug-spray can of unscented TRUTH and a deceptive joviality, the cunning mastermind behind Daily Kos leaves an empty chair where Tom Tancredo was sitting, until he fled like a ferret in the night.*

    *no offense to ferrets.

(*) Don’t get a swelled head Mr. Cole, but I’ve actually used the same phrase to describe, well, you.

Y’know what? You shouldn’t be proud of, or entertained by, this clip. Here’s why:

    – Markos blew his answer. The right answer is, “I’m a veteran and I love my health care, like all the veterans who consistently rate VA healthcare the best in America.” Tancredo’s just wrong, and Markos knows this. And, of course, the satisfaction rates for Medicare/Medicaid also outstrip satisfaction rates for private health care. Instead of addressing the facts, Markos took a cheap shot at Tancredo, which compromises his credibility. Sure, you might enjoy a high-five or two with your liberal pal, but it wasn’t classy, it wasn’t smart, and it wasn’t effective.

    – What’s with all the chickenhawkery? What’s the point? There are people out there who haven’t gone to war who want to send others to war, and there are people out there who HAVE gone to war who want to; there are people out there of both stripes who DON’T want to send other people to war. Here’s a thought experiment: what if GWB had actually fought in Vietnam? Would it have improved his wisdom about what to do in the Middle East? Maybe. Would it have improved his credibility? If the equation is “been to war” == “higher credibility”, then the answer seems to be, definitely. So if GWB weren’t a chickenhawk, he MIGHT have been wiser, but he’d DEFINITELY have had more credibility. Does anybody here want to take that bet? Not me.

The chickenhawk thing is a distractor – it’s just something to beat someone over the head with. Plus, it implicitly reinforces the stereotype that you have to have been to war to have credibility about it, which isn’t going to serve Obama very well as he makes decisions about Afghanistan.

So enough with the high fives, folks. Back to work.
