On the Road is a weekday feature spotlighting reader photo submissions.
From the exotic to the familiar, whether you’re traveling or in your own backyard, we would love to see the world through your eyes.
SouthofI10, Shrimp Boat. On the Bayou Teche, near Patterson, LA.
Max, The Bees, from the 2009 ABQ Balloon Festival.
Email me a link to your one or two favorite pics on a photo site like Flickr (do not send the image itself please) and I will put up favorites in open threads. Send a short caption if you want one.

Do be a do bee, don’t be a don’t bee.

Is that Lt. Dan in the back?

I think one of the bees is NJ’s new gov, Chris Christie.
MikeJ
Do those bees have prince alberts?

Love the first picture. Reminds me of my childhood.
TimF, thanks for this series. I’m really enjoying all the photos, even if I don’t always comment.
Also, thanks for the tip on how to email if the mailto thing doesn’t work. Appreciate it.
Brick Oven Bill
Today was food insecurity theory-to-practice day. I purchased (1) ten pound sack of potatoes for ninety-nine cents. The nutrition information stated that each potato contained 110 calories. I counted the potatoes and there were twenty-seven potatoes:
27 potatoes times 110 calories per potato = 2970 calories, or one and one-half days worth of food.
This equates to 67 cents per day.
As an arrogant American, I felt the entitlement to eat a piece of fresh fruit. The orange, bought not in bulk but as an individual fruit, cost me exactly fifty cents. I didn’t even need to cook this orange.
Eggs might be good with potatoes, and a source of protein, but I hate them due to a traumatic childhood incident. Eggs were $2.00 a dozen in bulk, or $2.80 a dozen for a dozen. This is like seventeen cents per egg.
Regarding that boat, Cajun Princess. I am too cheap to eat at Popeye’s Fried Chicken, but this review gives us insight about the people who do could probably get better nutrition from like, a stew with ten cent vegetable servings, for less money than they are paying for a Number 3 Fried Shrimp Platter at Popeyes:
“Let’s face it: the “South Stockton Strip” is not a great place for two extremely pail girls to be hanging out on any night, let alone a Friday. Our biggest mistake was choosing to dine in. The place was packed with… um… well… lower-bracket urban working-class types (I know some nice people in this demographic, but this night all of the rude, loud, obnoxious ones seemed to be having a big meet-up at Popeye’s). The floor and all of the tables were a mess, they were out of sweet tea (it’s one of the few Southern Thangs I learned to love living in Georgia) and drink lids, and when we finally made our exit from the place, we found some woman had double-parked her Ford LTD behind our car.”
Bad Horse's Filly
Ah, to be in either of those places, not here. Back from family craziness right into business craziness. But at least my craziness here is framed with snow-capped mountains and people I understand.

It was my first time at the balloon fest. Next time, I’m going with a better camera.
I’m getting photo-envy from the outstanding photogs on this site.

Is owning a hot air balloon more or less expensive than a horse
(non working horse, natch)?
It really is amazing how much money we have to spend in this country.
(For me it would be a $4000 bicycle if my money/sense ratio
were a bit higher.)
South of I-10
@jeffreyw: Nah, there boats were all “Jenny”.
In the interest of full disclosure, I didn’t take it, Mr. South did. He is the photog in the family. He fishes a lot and brings his camera along.
@Max: I love the balloon pic. There is a baloon festival in Baton Rouge, a friend of mine got some really great pics there.

Oh, very nice brilliant pic. And a whimsical second one! Love the talent on this site.

Open thread, so I thought I would toss this in here-
Via Instapundit, over at Reason:
The crowd also seemed unhappy about the final bill’s lack of coverage for illegal immigrants. Panelists and audience members repeated the formula that failing to provide universal coverage of illegal immigrants costs taxpayers more, in the form of emergency care for far-gone cases that could have been treated more cheaply with preventive or earlier-stage care. (OT: Is there any evidence to support this formula? Emergency rooms are expensive to operate, but it still seems logical that a policy encouraging a group of people to stay away from hospitals and doctors until their health deteriorates would reduce the group’s overall medical cost by reducing both range of care and life expectancy.)
Yeah. Seriously. The Glibertarian Health Care Plan:
1. Don’t get sick;
2. If you do get sick, Die Quickly!
And they wanted Rep. Grayson to apologize for his wildly hyperbolic remarks?
licensed to kill time
Those bees are a little scary. I was at the very first Hot Air Balloon festival in ABQ many years ago. It was a magical experience, getting up before sunrise and watching all the balloons inflating and rising into the air like soft glowing jewels.

I am in need of a translations from the wingnut tongue to English. Today, I received this email:

Then the blockquote kicks my ass. Everything after “Quote of the day…” should be included.
gwangung
@Liberty60: Yes, this is the way glibertarians think. They argue with a straight face that not having health care is cheaper in the long run because people will die off faster. Stoopid(tm). They don’t realize it applies to THEM as well.
Anoniminous
There’s plenty of Tea Bagging going on. Most of it directed at the GOP.
Hoffman has unconceded. (yawn)
The Florida senate race, the Ohio senate race, and the word from Texas is several house races and the governor race will have TB entries. Apparently Gov. “Let’s Re-Fight the Civil War!” Perry is too squishy liberal.
Extremely disappointed the New Mexico contingent – a true band of loons – haven’t raised their pointy little heads yet. In 2008 our Congressional delegation went from 3/2 (R/D) to 0/5 and Teague (NM-2) is the only one, as of now, in danger of being turfed-out. If the Baggers get their act together they can ensure Teague’s re-election.

Tried Posting this on Dkos in response to BarbinMD’s post where I found the pic of Obama at Arlington…
I made this image kind of spontaneously – it’s not meant to be disrespectful. It popped into my head as I took my internet mental break which consists of political blogs and lol cats. I just felt the image really sums up what the ‘dithering’ is all about – the bottom line. If you are going to think about the implications of a decision like this, do it at Arlington.
