Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Welcome to day five of every-bit-as-bad-as-you-thought-it-would-be.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

It is possible to do the right thing without the promise of a cookie.

Boeing: repeatedly making the case for high speed rail.

A norm that restrains only one side really is not a norm – it is a trap.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

The snowflake in chief appeared visibly frustrated when questioned by a reporter about egg prices.

Republicans do not trust women.

When tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes duty. ~Thomas Jefferson

Books are my comfort food!

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

This chaos was totally avoidable.

I did not have this on my fuck 2025 bingo card.

’Where will you hide, Roberts, the laws all being flat?’

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

The real work of an opposition party is to oppose.

Since we are repeating ourselves, let me just say fuck that.

She burned that motherfucker down, and I am so here for it. Thank you, Caroline Kennedy.

Calling all bakers. I’m going to attempt to make a Lane Cake today and if anyone has any experience with making one, I’d sure love to hear about it. I’m intimidated. Thank you, that is all.

I really *really* *REALLY* like b/w photography. These are wonderful, thank you.

Where was the window-washer one taken? Curious about the city springing up in the background.

Thanks, Slag. I was kind of thinking somewhere in Texas but don’t know the scenery — if I may use that word — all that well.

@BHF: God knows *I’ve* never made a Lane Cake (and likely never will) but I can remember my ex-husband’s Alabama-born grandmother once making what I’m pretty sure was a Lane Cake. IIRC, it took her all day (I got bored and didn’t pay much attention) and was not only labour-intensive but very detailed and painstaking. Too rich and complicated for me, but a stunning dessert for a big celebration. Good luck to you. I envy your guests.

@Bad Horse’s Filly: I don’t know what’s in a Lane cake, but, here’s my take. Heavy cakes cook more slowly, I’d have oven at 325. After you pour the batter into a pan, slam the pan down on the counter. It settles the batter and makes it more even. Light cakes (thin batter) bake at 350. You do have to use a toothpick near the center to see if it’s done. I have a feeling this is not help at all.

Great black and whites, Grumpy and nffcnnr. B and W was my first passion in photography and about all I took in the 70′ and 80’s. This winter I plan to set my Rebel dslr on it when we get some cloudy weather, and shoot some historic western sites out in the countryside.

The window washer is way cool.

@Maude: Don’t tell, but I’m going to cheat a bit and use a white mix, because it seems this cake is all about the filling and frosting. The cake seems to only be a foundation for nuts, fruit, booze and butter. You bake it in 4 pie tins, so you have 4 thin layers which you then pile high with the rest of the shi…..stuff.

@General Winfield Stuck: I mourned the death of film because I so loved doing B&W photos. Technology has caught up and I hear you can do decent B&W with digital now, but haven’t tried yet.

These pix, along with all the ones Tim has posted, are stunning. Always a favorite stop each day to see more of B-J crews talents.

@Bad Horse’s Filly: If the batter is thick and it has all that stuff, slow cook it. It is going to be wonderful. Rule of thumb, high heat dries things out. If the cakes are going to bake for a longish time, put a pan of water on the bottom of the oven. It adds moisture. If the directions call for over 50 minutes baking time, I’d set the oven at 325. It will come out fine. I promise. I used to try all kinds of b aking and stuff came out edible…most of the time. Please let us know how it came out. If it comes out like a rock, send it to John.

This is good news and if it continues the recent trend of less weekly unemployment claims, it will be the biggest factor for the 010 elections, and 012. When the weekly unemployment claims drop below 400,000 a week, it is standard acceptance that the economy is starting to add jobs rather than lose them net. But it will still take several months for the monthly job loss numbers to turn positive for net jobs created.

WASHINGTON – In a hopeful sign for the economy, the number of newly laid-off workers filing claims for unemployment benefits fell below 500,000 last week for the first time since January.

Also, I’m enjoying listening to this talk about Obama’s education in science and technology initiatives in the background. It’s like these guys have broken into my mind and stolen all of the thoughts I had throughout my formative educational years. Must be some universal appeal in wanting kids to be able to think critically.

@r€nato: That’s very interesting. It’s an Editor’s Pick over at the WSJ as well.

I wonder why the media is all of the sudden in such a hurry to throw Dobbs under the bus?

Couldn’t possibly have anything to do with this:

“Mr. Dobbs, who left the network last week, has said in recent days that he is considering a third-party run for a New Jersey Senate seat in 2012, or possibly for president.”

There are no sports in Texas but football. Oh, yeah, there are other activities that involve balls and sweating, but those are just things you do when it’s not football season.

You think they’d have made “Friday Night Lights” about baseball? Basketball? Please. You can get maybe 20 people to show up to a baseball game, a little more than that for basketball. Football’s what brings the town out on a Friday night.
