Could be a long, long day tomorrow for Steeler nation:
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who sustained his fourth concussion in four years last Sunday, will miss this week’s game against the Baltimore Ravens, FoxSports.com has reported.
That leaves the Steelers with Dennis Dixon as their starting quarterback.
Dixon, the third-string option before Charlie Batch broke his left wrist when he came in against Kansas City, has appeared in one game in his two NFL seasons, completing one pass.
Ugh.
JenJen
You don’t say? Why, how very upsetting. ;-)
Blue Neponset
Good on the Steelers for doing the right thing. Concussions shouldn’t be taken lightly.
Aaron
Ugh. Still, I wonder if he gives us a better chance to win than Charlie Batch? He was pretty much a statue in the pocket, and the Raven’s blitz would have tee’d off on him. At least Dixon has the mobility and a week of reps at practice.
I am still nervous about this week’s game, though
tim
John! What’s the deal? I thought this blog would be an orgy of WV Mountaineer Madness today following the upset win over Pittsburgh?! wtf, man? :D
sgwhiteinfla
Don’t be so sure. Dennis Dixon was a likely first round pick until he hurt his knee at the end of his senior year. He isn’t Big Ben but he is mobile and has a decent arm. I won’t say he will definitely lead the Steelers to victory but I will say his mobility is likely to give the Ravens fits if they blitz him
Max
Good news for Max. I took Balty in my pool.
jeffreyw
Ugly? Nonsense, it’s just a game. You wanna talk ugly? Mrs J wants mashed potatoes on her perfect T-Day leftovers sammich. We nearly came to blows.
Corner Stone
So, will there be more pump fakes, or less?
Corner Stone
@jeffreyw: Will we soon be reading about you being in an SUV accident where Mrs J *had* to smash the back window out to “rescue” you?
jeffreyw
@Corner Stone: What I most fear is that friends will be invited over for a “mystery meat” BBQ. Where’s Jeffreyw? they’ll all ask, and Mrs J will be all noncommittal n shit.
Napoleon
Could be worse, they could be playing Cliff Stout.
Just Some Fuckhead
Where is Tomczak?
Downpuppy
This is Roethlisberger’s 4th, & Polamalu has 7 concussions, according to
Which in a sane world would mean gold watch time. But this is the world of StrikeForce, where it’s apparently legal to sit on someones back & pound the back of their head until the ref gets the thumbs up or down from the crowd.
Zach
I wouldn’t worry too much. We (Baltimore) apparently lost our offense a few weeks back against Denver and can’t seem to find it.
On top of that, Ed Reed and Ray Lewis might not play, Fabian Washington and Terrell Suggs are out, and Flacco will have a limp if he does play.
I just Googled Dennis Dixon. First, he is the second result behind a minor league baseball player. Second, NFL.com has a highlight reel for his career – http://www.nfl.com/players/dennisdixon/profile?id=DIX123425 – apparently this is the only pass he’s thrown, but that is convincing evidence that he has sufficient talent to tear up the Ravens’ battered secondary.
If it weren’t for surprisingly capable backup work by Lardarius Webb at cornerback, the Ravens would be in even worse shape.
smiley
@Corner Stone: Sorry to do this but, consider the source.
Joel
maybe dixon is your tom brady?
unlikely, though.
Zach
On the subject of concussions, the Colts/Ravens game last week was absolutely disgusting. The Colts have a young TE named Tom Santi who they apparently decided to throw to for the first time in his career… he was doing well till he suffered a really hard hit on a crossing route that stunned both players. They showed him on the sideline afterwards gasping for air, on his knees, and obviously nauseous… ie concussed. He was back in on the next series and got absolutely nailed by Ray Lewis and fumbled on the goal line… the replay showed him briefly losing consciousness. Then he’s back in the second half wherein he dropped two passes and screwed up a route… the announcers joked that his hot streak had ended or something.
Downpuppy
Globe link on concussions – is this how it works?
Corner Stone
@smiley: Personally, I think she beat the crap out of him. Not to go all Church Lady on this thread, but this whole deal seems hinky.
I mean, we all know how hot tempered those damn Swedes are, amirite?
Cat Lady
@Joel:
If they’re really lucky, Matt Cassell.
smiley
The NFL and NCAA should set career and season concussion limits. The way Florida handled Tim Tebow was just about right (of course, they have a talented backup). Second concussion in a season, you’re out for the season. First concussion in the next season, you’re out the rest of the season. Four concussions should end a career.
Cheryl from Maryland
Hey, the FCS has started. That’s PLAYOFF college ball, so REAL football, not the BCS mess. Go William and Mary! Beat Weber State!
joe from Lowell
They should have hung onto Leftwich.
That guy was the perfect Steelers’ backup QB. He has more poise in the pocket than anyone I’ve ever seen.
New Yorker
Go to know this in advance. Time to start Donovan McNabb on my good fantasy team….
Damned at Random
don’t count Dixon out. He was a great college player and has a cool head
Svensker
@Corner Stone:
Ven ve are rilly mad, ve make ju eat dat dratted lutefisk, ja, you bet.
jeffreyw
@jeffreyw:
I have prevailed upon Mrs J’s innate good sense and presented her the perfect leftovers sammich.
khead
I’d rather be hit with the 9 iron than eat lutefisk.
fordpowers
dennis dixon used to play for the ducks. he wasn’t terrible. it’ll be fine.
Robertdsc-iphone
I think Big Ben should hang them up. 4 concussions is enough.
dan robinson
Maybe Ben could try downhill skiing. I’m thinking he has the lower body strength for it, and the opportunity to get another concussion is pretty low.
I’m watching the race from Lake Louise, Alberta and an American just clipped a gate at around 100 mph. Not good. Maybe if there were billion dollar subsidies for downhill skiing the way there are for professional football, Ben would take a shot at it.
chrome agnomen
@jeffreyw:
damn that looks good
chrome agnomen
@dan robinson:
ask sonny bono about that concussion thing
dan robinson
Is there a joke here about Cher and plastic surgery?
CT
@Zach: dixon did play some minor league baseball before his senior year at Oregon.
Corner Stone
@jeffreyw: I find your lack of mashed…disturbing.
/DV
JenJen
@Corner Stone: Apropos of nothing, lmfao lmfao lmfao at your employment of the hinky line. :-)
Thadeus Horne
@Svensker: Ah, jeez….I’d pry my eye out with a rusty spoon before I would ever again eat lutefisk.
Corner Stone
@Thadeus Horne: You ate it the *first* time?
Man I hope your girlfriend looked like Elin.
Yutsano
@Thadeus Horne: Where I went to high school there was a small town about ten miles north that had a high Norwegian population. They had a festival once a year and one of the offerings was lutefisk. On a dare I tired it once. Never again no matter how much I was starving, that crap is NASSY!!!
Morbo
@Corner Stone: You think that’s bad? We had no mashed potatoes at Thanksgiving dinner! And it’s not because someone decided on a healthy and tasty alternative; the hostess forgot. My aunt will hear about it for quite some time.
It will be a good week for my FF defense; although without Big Ben, the Ravens will probably only get about 3 sacks instead of 6…
Yutsano
@Morbo: Ha. This happened to my family once. There was a miscommunication about who was supposed to make the potatoes so they didn’t get made. I of course made the stupid mistake of rubbing that in my mom’s face on Thursday, guess who got stuck with peeling duty after that?
JenJen
@Morbo: I am sorry, and it really isn’t my place and I’m even butting in a little, but how the hell do you forget mashed potatoes on Thanksgiving?
Morbo
@JenJen: Rousing conversation, obviously. The potatoes were in the building and everything; they just never became mashed potatoes. Personally I just compensated with stuffing and corn casserole.
alhutch
I’m looking forward to Dennis’ first pro start. Smart kid with better than average tools for the game.
Figure no knee injury his senior year and he is the Heisman frontrunner and had the Ducks on pace for the NCG, even after a slew of injuries on offense. Don’t count him out before the game even starts.
Zach
@CT: Then Wikipedia thinks his minor league baseball career is more notable than his NFL career. I’m not sure that’s any better :)
FWIW the Baltimore Sun on Friday said Lewis, Reed, and Ngata are likely to play and Suggs might be back in too. If that’s the case, welcome to the NFL Mr. Dixon!
JenJen
@Morbo: It’s a funny story, and a Thanksgiving to remember. :-)
Corner Stone
@Morbo:
I’d advise caution with this route. I don’t have aunts, but I know people who do.
I wouldn’t fuck with them.
Corner Stone
@alhutch:
Him and Joey Harrington?
Jamey
Ben Roethlisburger is the Ken Clean-Air-System of the NFL: His problem is that he has a small chunk of brain lodged in his skull. Get rid of that and he’s right as rain…
Honus
the Steelers are better with Ben out over the past three years. You could look it up.
They should have kept Byron leftwich though. he was the perfect backup. Just as good as Ben, when he went out and Byron came in there was no drop off. And Just as injury prone. Between the two of them, you had a full season of good quarterback.
Andy
That’s a huge break for the Ravens he won’t play. I give the edge to them now and think they will win.
I need a name for in here
What is the recommended club for windshield smashing? I’m thinking a three iron would be best, it’s a long club and it has a solid metal head.
Steeplejack
@Jamey:
LOL. Good Monty Python reference.

So, will there be more pump fakes, or less?
