Sarah Palin, birther:
Speaking to the conservative talker Rusty Humphries today, Sarah Palin left the door open to speculation about President Obama’s birth certificate.
“Would you make the birth certificate an issue if you ran?” she was asked (around 9 minutes into the video above).
“I think the public rightfully is still making it an issue. I don’t have a problem with that. I don’t know if I would have to bother to make it an issue, because I think that members of the electorate still want answers,” she replied.
“Do you think it’s a fair question to be looking at?” Humphries persisted.
“I think it’s a fair question, just like I think past association and past voting records — all of that is fair game,” Palin said. “The McCain-Palin campaign didn’t do a good enough job in that area.”
The modern GOP is just all class.

Even if he had been the greatest legislator in history, Sarah Palin is McCain’s legacy.

You know, on some level I get the birtherism because oh, my god, if it was true? Can you imagine the chaos and insanity that would follow if the freaking president of the united states had to step down because it was all a giant conspiracy and OH MY GOD THE WORLD WOULD COLLAPSE and then all these assholes could be the heroes they think they are, in their Cheeto-dusted fantasies, by saving the Republic or some shit.
This is why conspiracy theories are so great for losers. It’s so much more attractive to dream of a crisis in which you alone know the truth and you alone can save everybody, than it is to realize you’re in charge of your life and you just have to make it better rather than hoping everything collapses so you can rise up.
God Almighty, these people make me tired. I mean, I’ve read a lot of post-apocalyptic lit lately, and the wish fulfillment of most of it is just effing painful. We all need some kind of collective therapy to get that the world does not have to burn down to make us king.

Okay.. is Palin missing the obvious here. McCain/Palin didn’t do a good job becuase the whole birth issue (and other possibly legitmate “past association and past voting records”) were essentially mudslinging.
The smart course to take was to let lower level operatives (bloggers, door-to-door volunteers, media nutballs etc) take up the noise while letting the canidate keep thier hands clean.
Palin assumes that the reason that such tactics didn’t work is because they didn’t try hard enough?!
Palin seems incapable of considering herself as part of a larger political operation, and comes off as either really self-centered or short-sighed.
The GOP political scene is going to big a freak show of a circus in 2012 (and of course the big media story will be about how the Dems are divided between candiate A and incumbant B)

I really want to see you debate Barack Obama, while he’s talking about job creation, foreign policy, and energy, and you, you fucking primped-up bimbo, are nattering on about his birth certificate. As usual, it’s not about class, it’s about a party that lost the presidential vote by a whopping 9+ million votes needs to do anything, repeat, anything, to question the legitimacy of this president. They impeached Clinton so it’s too soon to try that again (plus all those pesky Dems who just happen to control Congress).
What’s left? Question his bona fides under the Constitution.
This is why I continue to be mystified by Dems who want to work with these people. They don’t want to work with us, they want to find out ways to convince everybody else that we’re not Americans, don’t belong here, etc etc.

Sarah Palin is the ultimate poison pill.
On the one hand, she serves as a beacon for the unhinged wingnuts that have taken over the GOP. She energizes them and gives them a huge pile of crazy to rally around.
On the other hand, she irritates the rest of us who are sane and makes us all wonder why she still has a platform. She also makes us all feel somewhat apathetic about politics.
And at the rate the Dimocrats are going, 2010 is going to be very ugly indeed because all the Palinheads are going to be fired up to vote for even MORE crazies (many of whom will win) and a lot of the rest of us are just going to stay home.
But, I say bring it on. If the media really thinks this country runs on teabagging, I say let them have it. It won’t take very long for the demoralized sane people to energize around what those sick fuckers will do once they get near the levers of power.
I only hope by that point, it won’t be too late.

I disagree.
In my opinion, for a politician to evoke a response from the opposition they need to hold office (i.e. Bush), otherwise there is no real motivation to oppose them or come out against them. Once they are out of office, the motivation really only flows to their base. I don’t think Palin calculated this when she quit as governor (I think she just wanted to cash in on wingnut welfare), but she will still reap the benefits.
Democrats don’t take Palin seriously. Not even a little bit. You can see that on display right here. It’s hard to get people fired up about a threat they see as non-existent. But the Republican base takes her very seriously, and she DOES get them fired up – as does the likes of Michele Bachmann.
2010 is a mid-term election, and those are always about the base. Sarah Palin isn’t going to fire up our base to come out to vote against an existential threat. She will only fire up the Republican base to come out, teabags swinging. Democrats have to find a way to fire up their OWN base for next year, or the people just aren’t going to show up.

No…how dare you suggest such a thing? Don’t you know that such questions hurt Sarah’s feelings and GOP voters see their highest national priority as protecting the fragile egos of leaders like Bush, Palin, etc?
It’s only fair to question associations when the politician is a Democrat. Which is why to this day most Americans have no idea that daddy Bush was in business with members of bin Laden’s family the morning of September 11, and nobody to my knowledge has ever questioned anyone in that family about their long-term association with Rev. The Republican Party isn’t going away, okay? It isn’t going to suddenly look at its crazy base and decide to bow out for the good of the country. It will keep putting up candidates for election.
The more that this crazy know-nothing harpy represents the Republican Party and its faithful, the more the Party will put up candidates that resemble her.
And it is inevitable, in our two-party system, that voters are going to get fed up with the Democrats and turn to the only available alternative. Not because they lurve Sarah Palin and all her works, but because they don’t know any better, don’t follow politics, and wetriedtheDemocratsanditisn’tallbettersolet’sgivetheothersachance. Simple as that.
If the Republicans put up candidates that are Olympia Snowe and Dwight Eisenhower, those candidates will win. But if the Republicans put up candidates who are Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck, those candiates will win. Once the voters are fed up with the Dems — and it will happen — I really don’t think that enough voters are knowledgeable enough to know whether the available Republican alternative is batshitcrazytownbugnuts insane. This is a typical song and dance of current Republicans, walking the tight rope of pleasing one’s base while trying to come across as not crazy to the mainstream. No, Sarah’s not a birther! And you’re a typical blinkered liberal to say so; she’s never questioned the birth place of the United States, and you’re libeling her to say so! She just thinks people with questions deserve answers. And isn’t it interesting Obama allows this to go on when he could settle in a minute by presenting the long form certificate. At the very least this isn’t the sort of transparency we were promised. But no, she never said he wasn’t born in the United States, and says far more about you liberals that you jump to conclusions. The Azaria jagger quote up above @ 75 is exactly right. Palin thinks she can have it both ways in this interview–she throws some red meat to her base, but she preserves what she thinks of as plausible deniability.
More to the point, she actually tries to make it about campaign style/tit for tat. She very carefully doesn’t say we should investigate Obama’s birth certificate because he’s really not legally the president. She says people should be encouraged to do it to discourage the andrew sullivans of this world from attacking people over birth certificates, like Trig’s. This is actually a grand strategy known as “they started it.” Since Obama can’t retroactively go back and shut Sullivan up, he is somehow morally obligated to stand and take this shit.
Actually, I’m in awe of her political skilz on this one. Her followers are going to be absolutely thrilled with her because she plays right into their deepest and most important fantasy which is not that Obama isn’t an American citizen, or is a muslim or something but that Palin and McCain lost because like all noble warriors they were too willing to stay above the fray. They were not able to combat the evil smears and attacks of the low life democratic rabble! Now in a rematch the gloves are going to be off and she will have not only righteousness but dirty tricks on her side. And let the worst campaign win!

If you add in the mormons and the K-lo catholics, you got one-to-one correspondence, lol.

@Pat:
Are you providing the microscope and tweezers?
Why do wingnuts have this obsession with getting their dicks sucked? That they usually want it done by some guy or any woman but their wife is even more interesting. It’s like they walk around with their pants down looking for people to suck their dick.
Hey Pat, if you need your dick sucked just hang out in the mens room of the next Republican or Teabagger convention. I am sure there will be more than a few Repubs ready to give you all of the lip service you desire.
Sarah will not run in 2012. She will pretend that she might so that she can milk her blind, mentally challenged and adoring public for more money to shove in her bank account. I hear that Dear Sarah is not allowing pictures at her book signings but instead has a photographer taking pictures that people can order copies of (starting at $16.00 each) online.
As they say, a fool and their money are soon parted. Sarah proves this daily.
Shell
Did she ever explain why she thinks they’re ‘rightfully’ making it an issue. Cause some whacked-out fright wigged lawyer tells them to?
On that subject, anybody heard anything about Orly Taitz lately? Specifically on that 20,000 fine she got slammed with in October.
Kathy
Palin, when she does the full birther, implies that she has shown Trig’s Birth Certificate. Look, personally I think she told the truth about being Trig’s mother. She was going for a fundie abortion when she got on the plane with contractions, but why would she lie about showing something she never did?
Cat
@elmo:
That would be true, except for the fact a large enough voting population knows the Republican party hates their very existence and will keep them from ever voting for them. That portion of society is growing faster then the Republican base.
You don’t have to know what Cap and Trade means to know in your bones the Republican’s don’t view non-whites, non-traditional lifestyles, and women as 2nd class citizens. When that meme changes they maybe could go back to being as powerfull as they used to be.

@Cat:
I wish I had an edit function. That should read :

Sure, insult Pat going with the easy everyday mundane stereotype while fully knowing there is a rich diversity in the Brokeback GOP. Like the real American R-patriot pol in FL who paid to give an undercover cop a hummer. Teabaggers are givers too. Some tap dance in airport stalls seeking soulmates. Others wear diapers. It’s a big tent, with a dick buffet inside for the real American baggers.

@Shell: Taitz flat out refused to pay the fine. As far as I can tell, her argument was basically that judges shouldn’t be allowed to make rules for court proceedings, or fine attorneys for breaking the rules, because you know who else made rules and fined people? HITLER. (That’s only a slight exaggeration – see link – she actually said this was an example of totalitarianism.)
Hob
@Shell: Er, I meant to add that the most recent news I’ve seen about that is the update at the end of that link: collectors are on the way.

@Tsulagi:
… a dick buffet…
I heard a thud. Did Mark Foley swoon?

@DougL (frmrly: Conservatively Liberal): The Onion seems to be a repository for some of that guy’s previous writing.

@Pat:
Ooooh! We have to LIKE what we read now? Fascist much?
Comrade Mary
Oh my, oh my.
I just watched David Shuster spank Brent Littlefield on MSNBC just now because the GOP spokecritter could not, despite multiple attempts, say that Palin was wrong to say that the American public was right to question Obama’s citizenship. When he was given one last chance, Littlefield said something like “The most outrageous statement made in the last 24 hours was the president saying that we should be glad that we’re losing so many jobs.”
I’m sure this will be up on YouTube soon enough, but for now, I think Palin and the GOP’s deep reluctance to criticize her in public was predicted by Jerome Bixby 56 years ago.
You may know this story best from The Twilight Zone. (Yep, the whole thing is up there. Link goes to part 1 of 3.)
“No! Not the cornfield! Not the Iowa cornfield!”

@gwangung:
You mean a post that contradicts itself in two consecutive sentences is not a spoof?

I don’t think Pat would see that guys problem as a problem…lol!
