Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

Second rate reporter says what?

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

Optimism opens the door to great things.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Bark louder, little dog.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

The revolution will be supervised.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

You lucky fucker. I’ve been pining for God’s Dandruff for weeks now. Weatherman says maybe Tuesday, which means it’ll be 62 and cloudless on Tuesday.

How in hell can I get in the holiday mood looking at grass? Perhaps I should smoke it….

But next Summer, global warming will be back!

I wonder if the next denialist mantra will suggest that the Earth isn’t tilted on its axis* but instead the seasons come from normal fluctuations in the CO2 levels and all that stuff about long periods of darkness is just a Norwegian socialist hoax to steal all of Sarah Palin’s daughters into sex slavery.

*We all know who was in the Axis, right? Why else would people mention these thing but as a code for something…?

Snow down here too, although the system is fast-moving and nothing stuck except up in the north Georgia mountains. Still, the flurries were pretty.

And since this is a weatherish thread, I’ll mention again something I posted last night way down in one of those lo-o-o-oong threads: I heard from my Canadian kinfolk that *for the first time since 1843* Toronto had a 100% snow-free November.

    Take that, you global-warming deniers!

    ION:

Democrats who thought a vote against the sweeping health care package would inoculate them from political attack are facing serious blowback from angry constituents and interest groups on the left — fierce opposition that could prove as consequential as anything Republicans could have thrown at them.

If it wasnt for those damn tea-partiers and talk show hosts spewing their hate and splitting up the Republican party, maybe healthcare reform could sail through the Democratically-controlled Congress and White House. And, birthers also. Also, Politico is biased, so this must be a lie…

The “Climategate” bullshit is kind of a last straw for me. (Almost) nobody knows what the fuck they’re talking about when it comes to the (marginal) controversy, and nobody in the major media besides the NYT (as far as I know) is correcting anyone. I mean, even Jon Stewart got it wrong. What. The. Hell.

So fuck it – either a) install an international carbon-reduction regime by fiat, and bypass the “democratic” process (because people are, in general, fucking retarded) or b) let the world melt, and watch billions suffer (because, fuck us, we deserve it at this point).

Um, guys by “hummer” I do mean the car, rather than the other kind of “hummer”, though if that’s what floats your boat, you can go out and find that too without any guilt about causing any global warming thereby – though if your SO finds out about it, there may indeed be some very localized heating within your household. My father and uncles raised trotters and pacers, and as a kid and teen I spent as much time at Lebanon Raceway (near Cincinnati, Ohio) as I did in school. This story sickens me to my core, because racing can be an ugly business, and my gut tells me this could be an insurance scam in addition to an unspeakable horror and tragedy. Well, I can’t speak for global warming, but I’m located at a 2000ft elevation, so, yeah, we often get snow as early as Halloween, in North Georgia. When I was a kid (in the ’60), one expected 5-7 measurable snowfalls per winter, with one or two over 6″. Since the ’95 Superstorm we’ve only had a couple of +6″ snowfalls, with winters on the dry side. This has been a blessedly wet year (finally out of drought, hydrologically speaking).

It is a proof of idiocy to point to a specific Weather event, and pretend it more than a single data point in the continuum of Climate.

So today, Sarah Palin is saying we need to be a more humble, contrite nation:

“If we could get back to that, that humbleness, with that kind of contrite spirit, I think that we would be able to be provided more of the answers to so many of the great challenges that we’re facing.”

This is her two weeks ago:

In criticizing the bow, Palin underscored the distinction between Reagan’s view of American exceptionalism and President Obama’s efforts to cast America as but one member of the community of nations.

“That [bow] made me and many of us uncomfortable, and I don’t think it was just an accidental breach of protocol, because we’ve seen it before with one of the Saudi leaders, too,” Palin told Newsmax. “I think it goes along with that same mode of operation that was apologizing for who America is. In order to build relationships with other countries and strengthen our allies and allow more alliances across the globe, we don’t need to apologize for who we are. In fact, I think we would be respected to an even greater degree if we exerted more of the diplomatic power that, again, Ronald Reagan did.”

I really, truly think she is dumb. After watching her vacant eyes recapping an Illinois Purdue game on a local newscast, I can’t really come to any other conclusion.

But it’s only confirmed with stuff like this. You have intelligence to mold a consistent message. She just says stuff that she thinks sounds good… and makes sure she throws in “Reagan” every so often to get the monkeys to jump up and down.

“No one person has all the right answers. It takes a united nation, and it does take godly counsel, and it takes prayer and answers to prayer – and a collective humble heart of a nation seeking God’s hand of protection and his blessings of prosperity.”

We got a dusting of snow while we were in PA last week. It was enough to make things picturesque, but fortunately not enough to prevent us driving en masse to the bowling alley or ruin our bonfire. Looks like they are getting about 3″ today, though.

It was below freezing here in the UK yesterday, but stayed sunny and bright. I have no idea what today was like since I woke up at 2:30 pm (thanks to jet lag and a cold), and it was already getting dark. Sunset was at 3:55. Ugh.

For example: the Arctic ice cap has historically stayed in place in summer, shrinking somewhat from winter, but still present and accounted for. By 2007, it was shrinking at a catastrophic rate, and by 2015, the Arctic is projected to have NO ICE CAP AT ALL in the summer.

And yeah, Toronto was snow free all November, which was great for cycling. We expect some snow within a few days.

Anyway: this Nature of Things three part series on the Arctic meltdown is damn scary. The Arctic ice cap has been shrinking precipitously in recent years, and it’s projected that around 2015, the Arctic will be ice-free in the summer. This was originally expected to happen around 2100.

All three shows are available on the CBC web site, but you may need to be in Canada to play them.

And yeah, Toronto was snow-free all through November. I saw a tiny frosting of snow on my garage roof the morning of December 1, but I was assured that it happened after midnight.

@Nutella: Honestly, I think that the biggest mistake that scientists made was even starting to use the term “global warming”. Even “climate change” was a mistake. When it comes to scientific matters, a large segment of society is very, very literal, and won’t believe it if they can’t see it. I think the best thing that scientists could do right now is get back to the “pollution” aspect of things, and how it’s affecting our air and water. We can SEE pollution in the air and litter on the ground and in the water. People understand pollution, and don’t think of it as some sort of lefty hoax if they’re told that pollution has very bad consequences for us and for the planet.
I know…it’s dumbing down science, which is really quite sad. But otherwise, you get all of these idiots who think that climate change is a hoax if they experience a cold day in January.

The one that makes me most want to weep is the “how can we predict the next few years of weather? We can’t even get tomorrow’s weather right?” Since it’s, like totally *obvious* that if getting tomorrow more or less right is hard, getting the next few decades more or less right must be, like totally a gazillion times harder.

Compare: We can’t predict what will happen on the next spin of the roulette wheel. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t be nearly 100% confident that if you start with $1000 and put $10 on red one hundred thousand times in succession, you will lose all your money.

Yep. Houston PROVES there is no global warming. As for major shifts in climate, ‘abrupt climate change’, predicted in most models, well…

    http://www.kbtx.com/home/headlines/78552332.html

HOUSTON – Normally hot and humid Houston is dealing with
weather it rarely gets: snow. Snow began falling Friday morning in Houston and other parts of southeast Texas and as of late Friday afternoon had not stopped.

National Weather Service meteorologist Charles Roeseler says
it’s the earliest snow in Houston’s history. The previous record
for Houston was Dec. 10 in 2008 and 1944.

Snow is rare for the nation’s fourth largest city. In the past
15 years, it has snowed four times, including Friday.

The National Weather Service says there have been reports from
counties southwest of Houston of accumulations of 3 to 4 inches.
There have been reports of half an inch or less in Houston with
suburbs south of the city reporting 1 to 2 inches.

AS of 4:00PM Friday there were reports of snow on Galveston Island. Earlier in the day it had been snowing as far southwest as Victoria.

    @Elie:

Adding to it, just finished a conversation with my husband on why we can’t get people to do things that prevent the complete destruction of our wild salmon habitat…

This morning just came back from observing for returning spawners in one of our local streams…surprise, no returns this year so far, and the past years either as we struggle in a multiyear effort to return wild salmon to spawn here. Many people watched for years and years as they disappeared and though we have dedicated volunteers working to help return them, the average Joe never even noticed they were gone. Along with them the decline of otters, heron, hawks and eagles that they supported in this still fairly rich but slowly diminishing habitat..

Global warming is just one piece of this huge puzzle of destruction. My sadness is how stupid and how corrupt at our core because we KNOW things are different and that the wildlife are declining across the board. In Puget sound, the December bird census continuously shows decline, year after year.

So because of some administrative email issue, the complete notion of global warming and habitat change is kaput, even as we see the decline and change with our own eyes across a broad set of indicators..

Fuck humans. We are going to get what is coming to us.

    — On an odd and interesting happening this morning, I saw a little hummingbird at our window as we sat drinking coffee…

Its about 30 degrees this morning and the little female came up to our window where I usually hang one of our feeders…

This caused great activity as I ran to the garage to find a feeder and began to brew up some nectar. I called my next door neighbor who is also cooking up some and after cooling, I will hang up a couple of feeders and see if she returns…

The Rufus hummingbird is a little toughie. Last year we saw some around here and several friends put their feeders back out. To my knowledge, no one has seen em in January, but who knows…

I have no idea what they eat. No way are they relying on just feeders cause most folks take em down at the end of August…

Any time temps allow the (willfully) unenlightened to point and say something along the lines of “warming, my ass”, they can smugly assert their correctness. @alistair:

The only vanity plate I’ve ever seen that I would actually want …

The best vanity plate I ever saw said, “Beyond.” That’s all. This was back in the late 80s, by the way.

Now, what kind of car was it and what color?

The “Climategate” emails have been altered, according to a friend who’s in a position to know. Quite the hit job.

Couldn’t be happier with the World Cup draw. England are in a lose-lose sitch with the U.S.: even if they win by 3, it won’t be enough for their over-hyped fans.

I think you’re wrong about that: look beyond the tabloid idiocy, and most England fans would gladly take a 1-0 to start the group, with no injuries or dumb yellow cards. The hype may actually be worse for the Americans, given that ABC/ESPN will be harping on about 1950 in the lead-up.

I am sure someone already wrote this, but the 6 hours of snow and 26 degrees temperatures in Houston yesterday support your assertion

The snow here in NEPA is icy, and the roads are unhindered by traction. My Subaru just pulled a van and trailer off a guardrail, out of a ditch, and up a fierce hill. My snow tires are leaning against my sailboat. My Subaru found traction where none exists, on summer tires, and pulled twice it’s own weight up a damn hill. My Subaru is a god.

    @TR:
“And the sun’s out now, so clearly this “night” thing is a myth.”

You watch out there. This is more sinister than you think.
